Ok, I feel silly even writing this, but it keeps coming back to me, so I will suggest it to all of you and you can set me straight. Could Harper (and possibly others) be able to make herself invisible? The reason I am thinking this is because of her very sudden, very wet appearance to Juliet and Jack while delivering Ben’s message. This could also explain the whispers that accompany so many odd occurrances.
I asked myself, how could she appear so suddenly, and why would she be so wet if she was a hallucination/ghost/Smoke/time-traveling? The first three wouldn’t be affected by weather, and the fourth would presumably bring her from a dry location!
Well, if she were invisible, she would’ve been standing or walking in that rain for as long as Juliet and Jack, becoming as rain-soaked as they were, but invisible. I am assuming that being invisible does not preclude being affected by your surroundings. She was as wet as they were, possibly wetter.
This may explain the whispers, too. Invisible Others amongst the Losties.
My only question would be, why wouldn’t they use this ability more often. Well, I have one more example of an instance when Harper may have used her invisibility. When she confronted Juliet about the affair with Goodwin, she told Juliet that she had seen them in the act. Juliet had a look of disbelief that tells me that that should’ve been impossible. And yet, she knew she had been caught.
I have to say, I don’t even believe any of this. And yet, I kind of do, too. Especially the unexplainable and wet appearance in the jungle. I was giggling the whole time as I wrote this, but I want your feedback on it, so go ahead.

well,,,,,,, given the rest of the lunacy that is this show, I don’t see why this isn’t possible, although I see your hesitation to believe it at the same time.
Harper’s appearance so odd I have a hard time believing that she simply walked up, and then simply walked away so I don’t know.
Invisibility would somehow take this from a creepy show to something so sci-fi it boarders star wars. But again, it’s hard to say that isn’t what happened.
I’m going to say that she’s part of the smoke monster. I’m really buying into the idea that the smoke monster appears as people/spiders/whatever, etc. As far as how wet it was, I really don’t think that matter. If the monster can look like a person, then it can look like a person with water on them.
I agree with Chris. What Juliet saw in the forest wasn’t actually Harper, but it was the Smoke Monster disguised as Harper. I assume the Smoke Monster is sophisticated enough to fully integrate itself with its surroundings. That means that when the Smoke Monster shows itself to someone as a person and it happens to be raining then the form of the person that the Smoke Monster takes will be wet because a person standing out in the rain would be wet.
I really don’t think invisibility is all that far-fetched. As we all know, electro-magnatism (EM) is a huge part of this lost island. Visable light is simply a part of the E-M spectrum. I think it would be a logical conclusion, with all of the experimenting that they’ve been doing on the island, that they could have made advances in light bending/invisibility.
If time travel is possible in this reality, why couldn’t invisibity?

I think invisibility would be a cheap device for Lost. I mean the main reason why I think it is such a great story is its ‘original’ (for lack of a better term) elements. Smoke monster, Jacob, polar bears on an island, etc.
Thanks, Jungs, for making me feel like I am not being too too goofy!
DSD, I don’t think invisibility is a cheap device at all. I am the last person on Earth who you would call a sci-fi fan, but even I know that there are scientists out there that are working on “cloaks of invisibility” and other fantastical stuff. Granted, I don’t really think that is what is happening, but it is always possible. What is your opinion on the disembodied whispers?
If the DI or someone else could manufacture a smoke machine that can read thoughts and create things that are not actually there, then why not invisibility, which is something people are actually working on in real life? Thanks for your input!
Our suspension of disbelief in invisibility should be more or less the same as that of time travel, sentient black smoke, the living dead, various apparitions, the “healing properties” of the island, or the other apparently pseudo-scientific and paranormal elements on the show. Science accepts that the laws of physics make time travel possible to some degree and those same laws allow for invisibility.
Still, I agree with others that Harper is most likely an apparition produced by Jacob (or Ben) and/or Cerberus.
Why not throw invisibility in the mix with all the other powers on the island. There are several reasons the others don’t use it more often. 1-maybe only a few have the power. 2- maybe it drains energy or is hard to recover from so they only use it in extreme cases. 3-maybe they have laws preventing its use for whatever reason. 4- and most of all — If they used invisibility to take care of everything, there would be nothing to see on the show. I like how it adapts to the whispers as well as the sudden appearances.
Gets a +1 from me
I hadn’t thought of that it’s interesting to think about.
don’t forget when Walt appeared to Shannon that time with water pouring from him and said something about the button backwards i think, it was very creepy. i hope its not invisiability, i’m sticking with the smokie train of thought.
SL this made me laugh, but the island seems to be invisible so what do i know.
The razor would suggest that Harper just hid in one of ‘Sally Slingshots’ hidey holes
