Ok, i’ll keep this short and sweet…
I have a belief that the oceanic 6, Ben, Tom, Ethan, Richard, Lockes Dad, have all travelled to and from the island via the Orchid station. I beleive somehow this can transport you through time and space (casmir effect) to other areas of the world etc.
This is why Tom says that some of them can come and go from the island This is why Ben can travel between island and mainland This is why Ben wasn’t too bothered about the sub being blown up This is how the polar bear got to the dessert This is why ben needs so many passports, in case he ends up in a foreign country This would explain how 6 get home, perhaps by accident still they all do, maybe they are all present at a time when something happens and it transports them all back. The transportation happens quickly so taht is how Tom can be talking to Michael on the mainland, but be back to talk to Kate and Sawer in the cages on the island, why Richard can spy on Juliettes sister, but get back relatively quickly
anyway, thats my idea, what do you think!

I don’t know if I agree the Oceanic 6 travelled through a time portal or whatever the orchid station does. I do think Ben, Tom, Richard etc. do travel through some time warp but if the oceanic 6 travelled through a time portal why would jack be flying on planes in the hope that it crashes back on the island. If he got off the island using the “portal” then wouldn’t he be trying to get back through the portal? I agree there is some kind of time portal but I don’t think they leave through the portal, im still betting on the submarine being the means for the oceanic 6 to escape the island.
You could be right. The Orchid Station was introduced for some purpose.+1

I agree that the Orchid seems to be the best bet as to how Ben, Tom, Richard, etc. are able to travel to and from the island. However…

You really didn’t answer this question, and I’m interested in what you think the answer is. The best answer I’ve heard so far is that Ben only trusts certain people to go out and do his bidding off the island. However its just as likely that only certain people, with certain connections to the island and/or the forces of fate, can travel to and from the island using the Orchid.
whatever means of travel ben does, we shall find out next episode, but good theory on how he does it
Dharma, I really like this idea! It is plausible IMO, and could answer why Ben was not concerned with the sub, unless Ben somehow knew it wasn’t destroyed. It may answer how Ben and some of “the others” (not all), come and go.
I am not certain if that is how I see “the six” leaving “the island’, though.

It’s a good bet you’re right and it seems like the orchid station is where the temple is.
I think if the O6 (plus 2 bodies) were “transported” anywhere via the Orchidmobile (TM), then it would have been to the island in the South Pacific that Jack claims they were rescued from at Kate’s trial.
However, I think they probably arrived at that island using a more conventional method like say a commandeered chopper, a sailboat called the Elizabeth, the Others’ other boat, or a sub that may have never been destroyed.
At this point , I’m inclined to think there is some alternative means of travel, to and from the island, and posssibly to and from different points in time/space on the island. For the former, Shamballa provides viable alternatives, although these would not necessarily rule out something in the Orchid station providing yet another means. I think a lot of what we’ve seen in the show suggests time/space travel, from duplicated rabbits to Harpers mysterious coming and going, although where the writers go with it is anyones’ guess. For now, I’m still with the time travel gang.
