The island will not let Michael die.
Having read some excellent and slightly mad theories on who is in the coffin, this idea popped into my LOST ridden mind.
It is the real Kevin Johnson.
Jack finds out that Michael has the pseudonym ‘Kevin Johnson’. He reads that old Kev has died, goes to the chapel of rest, thinks blimey Michael is dead but finds out it’s not him!! Phew. Michael is still alive and they can all go and save the island together.
It would simply answer the whole coffin thing without being over complicated.

HOw would Jack find out when he never looked in the coffin?
I think you need to have an open mind here. Just because we dont see him look in the coffin does not mean he didn’t! I think the writers have used this scenario to; A - Get ‘us’ thinking about who is in the coffin B - Illustrate that Jack is actively looking for anyone who got off the Island, especially michael who has been back there.
I’m happy to keep an open mind. What i’m not happy to do is ignore what i saw and heard.
director: Can I help you?
JACK: Sorry I er. Actually I came, er, is the funeral over?
director: There was no funeral, sir, only a viewing. Nobody showed up.
JACK: Nobody? You sure?
director: Just you. [Rather disinterestedly] My deepest condolences. Friend or family?
JACK: Neither.
director: Would you like me to open it up?
JACK: No.
director: Take your time.
[Jack goes over to the casket and places his hand on it, tears in his eyes. He gets a pack of pills from his pocket, and notices he only has one left]
JACK: [Mutters] Damn it.
[He takes the pill, and leaves]
Lojozz - so, are we sure there was even anyone in there at all?! What if it was empty, or had a John Doe in it? I always thought Jack had looked in it! Whoa! Wouldn’t that be the biggest surprise of all…the coffin was empty!
So_Lost I’d love it if the coffin turned out to be empty. Somebody giving Jack a mind frack, and with it endless theories of whose in the coffin are spawned.
wouldn’t be too much of a suprise either So_Lost and Lojozz, we know they have a whole bunch of jane does for the re-created crash, make sense that they’d fake other deaths to carry on manipulating our losties

I think your theory is awesome! Since Jack leaves without looking in the casket, I don’t think that he found out that it wasn’t who he thought it was.
Uh, Maybe.
It’s a theory - I’ll give it that. If the coffin was really empty, why would the director ask Jack if he would like it opened? I don’t know, I’ve never really thought twice about this, the mystery isn’t IF there is a body, it is WHO is the body. I’m taking this one at face value, and I don’t think the producers are trying to trick us here.
DSD but we are also asking, what if the body inside is not who Jack thinks it is!

Let’s assume there is/was a real Kevin Johnson and he died and is in the coffin. That would rank among the greatest let downs in T.V. Show history.
Do you honestly think the writers would have it be someone we haven’t met yet or have a vested interest in? Who the hell cares about the real Kevin Johnson? Not me.
Kevin Johnson is an alias created by Ben and the Others. Nothing more. Nothing less.
