So, as far I know, this is where we first see Kelvin.
Before we find out later that he was Desmond’s partner in the hatch. Now, the video he shows Sayid in the flashback, is about Sarin gas, something which was used on the island, and we believe now, is still in the Tempest. But, if you notice at the bottom of the vid, it says Property of DIA. So, correct me if im wrong, I dont know what DIA stands for in the Military, if it does, but it is interesting how it is so simliar to Dharma Initiative A. I dont know what the A would stand for but still. Something I happen to notice.
(Will add more if I find it in the rest of the episode).

DIA I think is the ‘Defence Intelligence Agency’.
As for Kelvin, I think (hope) there’s still more regarding his back-story
DIA stands for Defence Intelligence Agency.
Do you have some reference or source to back-up the statement here that sarin gas is contained in The Tempest. I was aware it housed a deadly chemical/gas, but I don’t recall it being specified. . .?
Ah okies, that sorts the DIA out.
No, it was not specified, however, when the purge happened, they used a gas, which I believe is very much like sarin (the canister ben was holding was partially obscured and likely had a Dharma name, not its real name) and in the episode regarding the Tempest, Charlotte mentions it was used before (clearly mentioning the purge). It would seem to fit with the idea of sarin.
I think its an interesting coincidence that Sayid’s backstory involves his village being gassed in the same way the DI were in the purge, whether sarin gas was used in the purge or not.+1 for bringing it up.
To continue this train of thought:
While considered non-canon to the show, the game Lost: Via Domus has a character named Zoran Savo making a deal with Thomas Mittlewerk to purchase sarin gas and use it in experiments involving ESP.
But the nerve agent used by Ben and the hostiles during the purge results in bleeding from the nose and mouth. Some research on wiki shows that “Although bleeding from the nose and mouth were symptoms seen in the 1995 sarin gas attacks in Tokyo, this had been attributed to impurities within the sarin used as it is not usually seen.” This suggests that the agent he used was either impure or some other nerve agent.
Regardless of whether the purge was portrayed with scientific accuracy, the tempest houses an unknown nerve gas. The various chemicals, shown on screen when Daniel attempts to neutralize the gas, are used in the makeup of both VX and G series nerve gas, which could imply some sort of hybrid nerve agent, either completely lethal, or possibly non-lethal in controlled situations.
It seems unlikely to me that Ben changed the purpose of the station from something other than what has been shown, but may have manipulated its purpose temporarly in order to facilitate the purge.
So, did Dharma create a hybrid nerve agent for paranormal experiements or was it strictly intended to be a chemical weapon? If it was a weapon, what was its application on or off island and how would that fit into Hanso’s and Dharma’s efforts? If it was used on island, what was its purpose since the station was so far from other stations and barracks? Speculating that if “the sickness” Rosseau describes is different from the effects Desmond and Minkowski suffer from their temporal displacement, then could this nerve gas be the cause?
I always assumed the gas was meant to be used by the DI against the ‘hostiles’, but they got got wind of it [/pun] and thus the purge.
Not sure whether the sickness ties in with it though.
wtfsignmeup,
I have pretty much thought the same thing, until I started thinking about where the stations are in relationship to the barracks and how the sonic barrier, presumed to keep hostiles (and Cerbersu) out, didn’t protect the stations from attack. Why build the Tempest, the presumed factory of the nerve gas used against the hostiles, in an unguarded area where the hostiles could access it with minimal effort? I don’t know… just a thought train. Toot, Toot.
