The great physicist John Wheeler (who sadly died yesterday of pneumonia, aged 96) , famous for working with some of the best physicists in the world, co-father of the A-Bomb, progenitor of the careers of other prominent scientists (including Richard Feynman no less!), habitually referred to the laws of quantum mechanics as a “great smoky dragon”.
Sound familiar?…
If it doesn’t then all I can tell you is that, when I read the quote, it reminded me instantly of ‘Smoky’, the strange black cloud that inhabits the island.
Now, this might seem like a far fetched or ill-conceived connection to make (the idea that; if you are looking for some interconnectivity like this then you will probably be predisposed to find it eventually, comes to mind). However, some of the theories on this site make reference to the dharma Initiative having performed experiments whilst occupying the island, possibly because of its specific magnetic properties; ranging from rapid acclimation of polar bears, to curtailing/stopping the effects of aging, to time-travel and/or unlocking infinite universes.
I also understand that ‘Smokey’ was the (unintentional?) byproduct of one of these experiments. And considering the possible time-dilation effects present on the island, ‘Smokey’ could conceivably have been created via some time-traveling/temporal-bubble shinannegans that the DI were involved in during their time on the island (the same experiment that created this localized temporal anomaly). I think it’s the Swan hatch that is mentioned in other theories concerning this particular ‘incident’. If this turns out to be accurate, then the experiments would have almost certainly involved the world of quantum mechanics- of course having already dismissed the idea of some quasi-religious time-distorting jiggery-pokery (though I’m sure Locke would be positively salivating at the prospect). And in turn, having a ‘great smokey dragon’ that terrorizes the island as a result would be a fitting end to a failed attempt to either control or conceivably change these laws (as in the Vaslenzetti equation theories), the intended result being the ability to manipulate time. That, and it’s just the type of sneaky, obtuse, synchronicity-laden reference I can see JJ getting off on all day long.
The reference to many physicists throughout the show (Hawkings, Faraday and Minkowski) also makes me believe that a piece of the jigsaw puzzle that is Lost will be decidedly Physics shaped.
Now, even though I’ve read through many of the more popular theories on this wonderful site (thankyouthankyouthankyou, some of Lost is now finally making sense!), and searched for the term using the Search theories link, I haven’t heard mention of this.
So, as I said, not really a theory, but it might add some fuel to other theories, especially the time-travelly ones. So anyone willing to do the mental leg-work and weave this in to another theory if possible, go ahead, and if not then maybe just ponder it for a little while.
And hopefully we’ll get a full Faraday-centric episode sometime soon anyway and maybe get some goddamn explanations while we’re at it, though I’m not gonna hold my breath.

good observations—there are other theories, some that ended up being trollish/offensive, that felt the key to lost was quantum mechanics
Lucky SOB. I hope I live to be 96.
Very lucky indeed! He was working on something to do with quantum just before he died, so maybe there’s something in the notion that having an active mind keeps you young (in a relative sense of course).
Also thanks for the comment Lockeko, however I have my doubts as to whether there will be one eventual “key” to Lost, more like a whole room full of doors and a BUNCH of keys in a spinning tombola.
