so i know that this theory has been discussed before (mostly about hurley) but i did want to touch on some of my ideas on the subject. while i agree a great deal with wayne7554 i kind of want to throw my hat in the ring so to speak.

throughout the course of the show we have been led to believe that locke has the lutimate relationship with the island. that they have an understanding that is deep and to be unmatched. after some thought i don’t think that this is entirely true. i think that locke believes he and the island have a bond but i don’t think that the island sees it that way.

besides being able to walk what has the island given to locke? and i would argue the fact that locke is walking is due t othe magnetic pulse no the island as a gift. lets look at the “gifts” john has recieved from his beloved island. he gets a hatch to test his faith and almost bring him to the point of breaking, it brings him his father who he hates and fears more then than anything else, it kills the only real friend that he’s had in his life, and it brings him to war with people on and off the island. some might believe that locke is still living that lonely, depressing, broken life except now he can walk again.

the island has never reached out to locke. he forced ben to take him to jacob, jacob did not choose to speak with locke it was a forced encounter that almost led to john’s death. besides walking the island has given nothing back, has not reached out to communicate (all locke’s visions are self made and smokey tries to kill him the second time they meet). locke is still alone and still easily manipulated by others especially ben who has locke and the others convinced that locke is some kind of chosen one.

i do believe that there is a chosen one but i think he weighs a great deal more and has a lot more hair. while hurley might not understand what the island is, the island NEEDS him to.

from the start the island has been trying to reach out to hurley. with the numbers we are able to get hurley in australia to catch that faithful flight and they again appear to warn of the stress of the hatch. then there is the talking bird. the bird that swoops down only when hurley is around and with out a doubt calls his name as he passes by. there is something trying to get hurley to pay attention but hurley’s good nature and love and concern for others keep him fron seeing it. it’s like the island is telling hurley that “you may feel like you are cursed but i can et you free if you’d only listen to the talking bird”.

a more in your face approach of trying to get hurely to pay attention is the stalking cabin. jacob def. has something he needs to tell hurley, and unlike locke, he has been seeking hurley’s attention since he arrived on the island.

as of right now we are led to believe that hurley will leave the island before he discovers how important he is to it. it takes the sending of charleie (by jacob i’m sure of it) as the new talking bird to open hurleys eyes.

i believe that hurley is the one the others have been waiting for. the island keeps trying to point this out to him but sometimes it takes moe than a talking bird to get ones attention. in this case it takes the apperance of a lost loved one to really get the ball rolling. but i wonder when the island tells locke that he’s not the one how will he react to yet another let down. not just a let down but a failure from the one thing he believes in more then anything else in the world. will hurley be able to survive that? will the island be able to protect him?

Are you kidding? The island has brought Locke nothing? Let’s forget about being able to walk again — he has transcended his former self completely. No longer is he a nobody, wrestling alone with his perception of self-inadequecy. He has become a hunter, a leader; the weak-willed man has become strong.

    But whatever, maybe you’re right!

i like this idea. its true about Hurley. the bird, the numbers, charlie, the others needing hurley (if only to tell the group that they had his friends why not use anyone else, charlie, sayid, sun, bernard etc etc).

very possible, but i don’t buy it. thank you for posting this today, i was beginning to forget what an actual theory looked like. :-P

I have always thought that there is a reason we keep seeing Locke being conned during his flashbacks. Furthermore, I think the concept of the Long Con will come back with a vengence before the series (not in the way the Brits use it, but the US meaning) ends. I love the idea of the island being the one who is conning Locke. I always assumed it was Ben. Even better would be if Ben, Jacob, and the island (if they are indeed 3 separate entities) were all in it together, conning Locke into blowing up Dharma hatches, submarines, and killing Naomi.

I also agree that there is more to Hurley’s role in the story than we have been led to believe, and the big clue for me was when Hurley saw Jacob’s cabin. +1

I’m definitely having mixed feelings about this one. I do think that the island was trying to communicate to Locke, and for a time, Locke was able to go to Jacob’s cabin and talk to him. Jacob was likely trying to find his special person since he realized that Ben is crazy. Jack was candidate #1, but he was too much of a man of science to believe. Lock was candidate #2, but he is too easily coerced and not strong willed enough to lead. I think that Jacob/the Island is now trying to communicate to Hurley, candidate #3. This has been the design since this season began.

Hurley is growing and learning. He has been able to battle Dave, his eating, losing loved ones (Grampa, Libby and Charlie) and has been doing a lot to help lately. He found the Dharma V W van and has been trying to bring a lively spirit to the survivors since the beginning. He also, almost single handedly, saved Bernard, Jin and Sawyer. After proving himself in these manners, the island is looking into his soul and seeing great things. Now the Island is trying to communicate to him more than ever before, by showing him the cabin and making him good at horse-shoes. Hurley still cannot sense these things the way Locke could because he has been ‘scoobie-dooed’ many times in the past.

who says the island can’t have a special relationship with more than one person? who says the island is monogamous? maybe it loves them both in their own special ways.

i certainly agree that hurley has been picked by the island/jacob for something, but that doesn’t mean i think the island has forsaken locke. the last time that happened he lost the power to walk, remember.

nice. I think you could be right about Hurley. I think his role in the scheme of things is going to be alot bigger than what we have seen so far, and last series finale was him taking that first heroic step. Hes the underdog, the least likely to be the hero, and we know how the producers and writers on Lost like to flip the script on us, i agree him seeing the cabin could be something of importance. Not forgetting, his character was the first role cast for the show (not that that means anything, just thought i’d mention it)

Most importantly, hes a completely pure and innocent person and we already know that children on the island are ‘special’ to Jacob or the others for that very reason, and as Rose once said, hes the only person on the island that everyone likes.

you’ve got me thinking here, hmmm

we’ll have to see what goes down, but i think Hurley could turn out to be the unexpected hero +1

You’re right, Locke is still being manipulated, big time. Now ben is free to go wherever, like everyone that is with locke. How did that happen? And I thought I was the only one that remembered the talking bird! lol thank you!

Chevy, this I like, in fact I like it quite a lot. “Everybody loves Hurley” is clever. It sets Hurley as the token funny man. All eyes off Hugo Reyes, let’s watch Jack, John, Kate (and so forth) trapse around the jungle, running to something, away from something or trying saving it. The island is NOT about physicality , it’s so much deeper than that. If you have any more on Hurley, I’ll read it. It also has me thinking…..Nice +1

I, too, believe there’s something about Hurley. Not sure I agree with everything about Locke, but you have a point and that is Locke doesn’t seem as “special” as we once thought he was. On a side note, Rose and John both had a sort of shared communion with the island, being healed and all. I think it’s a bad sign that Rose, especially, has an aversion with Locke.

I like it, but i don’t agree. Hurley although a main character is by no means going to be the protagonist on this story. Locke has been tested and screwed with, but to say because the bird spoke to hurley he is special, how about walt talking to locke, or the fact that he seems to know when rain comes and goes. It seems the island is doing lots for John, he has survived multiple physical assaults on his life, the hatch door, ben shooting him, i mean Jacob asked john for help and didn’t from hurley.

I also always thought the smoke monster tried to kill john the second time because he was being watched, the first time he was completely alone when he encountered the monster, this time Jack was following John and peeking around to see the monster. I thought this because the monster can’t have people thinking it won’t kill them so it would only be nice to john when no one was around. John is the chosen one, if the island loved hurley so much, it would have helped him lose a little weight

Didn’t “Walt” save John after he was shot by Ben, that is Walt was the Island/Smokey??/
