Forgive me if this has been stated before (as I’m sure it has been), but I am new to the site and haven’t spent time reading many theories. My theory is rather simple but interesting. The island represents life after death.
The “others” are like the gate keepers of heaven. Those who were “chosen” and who were considered good were taken by the others to live with them. This would explain why children are taken by the others and said to be given “better lives”. Children are to go to heaven.
Those that are not with the others (Kate, Sayid, Sawyer, etc.) are in purgatory and must repent and pay for their sins in order to gain access to heaven. Those who do not properly change and repent are taken by the devil to hell. The “monster” or black mistis what takes people to hell. This would explain why Ecko was taken by the monster. He refused to confess his sins of murdering, etc and was immediately after killed by the mist.

I think the ‘others’ taking the children has less to do with them being good as they provide the group with more members, as if you can not have your own children then taking the children from the plane may be the second best option.
The personality flaws of the others seem even worse than the Losties.
It would be an awesome concept for a tv show.
Unfortunately, The producers have shot that idea down.
But they also said there was no time travel.
So who knows?

A bit too “Jehovah’s Witness-y” for my tastes ;-) Still a very thoughtful first posting. I do agree, however, that the people on the island are there for reasons beyond our current knowledge and god/bad themes and dealing with past issues (or sins, if you like) are related to each of the characters’ presence on the island

I thought the whole everyone’s actually dead/heaven & hell & purgatory deal was one of the first theories debunked by Darlton.
