The idea of Jacob, and the Black Rock, makes sense to me. In the episode (i forget which) in which Ben took Locke to see Jacob, there was a pure moment between all the choas that you see a figure in the chair (presumably Jacob). Now, when I look at this image (i’ll try and get a screencap at somepoint) he appears to be of the period of the Black Rock.
When Season 4, Ep. 5 came along and we had confirmation that Penny’s father knew about the island, buying the Black Rock ships log, written by the first mate….it occured to me that the first mate must have survived for a long enough time to write about the island, the properties etc. that Charles Widmore would read about and start his assault on the island. I believe Jacob may be the first mate of the Black Rock ship.
And no, I have no idea how he lived this long (though the Orientation film for the Orchid due to pop up later in the season may explain this), something about the island stops cancer, heals wounds faster, has an unbelievably strong electromagnetic field, and manages to sustain polar bears and craete a weird smoke monster; could all in all make a man live a long time. Look at Richard, first seen by Ben aged about 10, and later, Ben is about 28 and Richard looks no older.
But anyways, that is my theory about Jacob. (though his purpose, at least to me, is unknown.)

I think Jacob and Richard both are survivors of the Black Rock, and one of them possibly the first mate. Sure would like to see a flashback for the arrival of the BlackRock on the island !
One of the bigger questions that would be answered if there was a flashback for the arrival of the BlackRock on the island would be how it arrived at its location so far inland.
One possible explanation could be some big tidal wave that has caused the Black Rock to be carried inland. Although this would have to be a really freak occurrence.
Although the following: Far more destructive was the tsunami which swept through Indonesia on 27 August, 1883. When the island volcano of Krakatoa exploded that morning it not only blew itself to pieces but created a huge tsunami. As it swamped the surrounding islands, the wave destroyed 163 villages, killed 36,380 people and carried a warship miles inland. The height of this massive wave is unknown.

The other possibility is that the mineral cargo on the Black Rock was magnetically attracted by some magnetic source on the island and dragged to its current location. If this is the case … then it may well be that there is some energy source located under the Black Rock Boat. This source may well be where the Smoke Monster is.
So a flashback to the arrival of the Black Rock would answer some puzzles, we would get a confirmation about the longevity of Richard and we would find out whether Jacob was the Captain of The Black Rock. And we would find out how it got where it is! Bring it on.
For a ship’s log to have made it to an auction it didn’t require someone to have lived a long time to have written it.
The log would have been written during the voyage, and the real question is: How did it get off the Island? Widmore’s interest in it would have surely been because the contents of the log would have provided information about the whereabouts of the Island. . .
True, but I believe that whoever wrote the log once the ship was on the island, was living and writing about what happened there. The log turned up 9 years later on the coast of Madagascar with pirates. True, the person who wrote it may have died, but it appears as interesting that it COULD be Jacob….
Stitch-two other possibilities as to why the Black Rock was so far inland when the Losties found it are:
1)The island is volcanic and thus the landmass grows over time. When the Black Rock landed it may have been on the coast but since then volcanic rock has built up and extended the shoreline.
2) They took the boat inland to make repairs. It wasn’t possible in those days to mend a ship like that while it was still in the water.
