So what is up with that four toed statue?

— Lost_Dbutz

Sorry for any likeliness to other posts, but I didn’t find one that covered this idea completely, let me know your thoughts….

So what is up with that four toed statue? It seems quite apparent at this point that the Island has its own history. Since we haven’t really seen the Island’s flashback episode yet, all we can go off of is the ancient structures left behind. One of these structures that I will talk about in this theory is the infamous four-toed statue.

So how about the history and evolution of mankind, eh? It is an interesting topic to say the least. Throughout our existence, man has always tried to discover his own origins. Some skeptics say that we were created by a God in just a few moments, some say that we evolved over millions of years to become what we are today, others suggest that we are bred from a combination of these. This theory takes more of the evolutionary thought, but we all know that both ideas are largely integrated into the story of Lost. Perhaps TPTB are going for a divine intervention approach.

I submit that mankind has evolved throughout the millions of years that we have existed. The very first life forms on earth were theoretically water bound creatures. As time went on, these fins began to turn into digits and the creature began to walk on land. Millions of years are needed to turn a fish-like creature into a human, and as that time goes by, humans adapt to their environment and their bodies evolve to fit their thoughts and surroundings.

I’m using this concept to suggest that, perhaps millions of years ago before any records, humans had four fingers and four toes. Of course, a million years out here in the real world is a million years, but who’s to say, or not say, that a million years on the Island is the same as a million years here as well? I think that the first inhabitants of the island were primitive humans that only had four digits on each limb. These original inhabitants did not have the technology to build statues in the real world, but they had a heightened intellect and sense of awareness on the island that led them to construct such structures.

These original inhabitants built temples and statues to pay homage to the spirits of the island that have granted them such great intellect and health. The society lived peacefully on the island until a meteor came and destroyed it. The meteor left a large crater on the island and also destroyed the statue, all but one foot, which is the four toed statue that remains.

There are even people alive today that are in the process of developing six digits on each limb. Some would call this decease, known as polydactyly (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polydactyly). Others might call it evolution.

Another argument might carry on that the original inhabitants of the island just happened to worship someone who was suffering from Syndactyly (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Syndactyly) , which means that some of his digits were fused together.

I think it’s worthy of discussion. This is quite simple (and that’s good), it makes alot more sense than anything else I could ever put together. I’ve never heard of any 4-toed mythological characters and I especially don’t want the statue to be representing some alien race. That would suck.

Other than what the statue represents, what I think is equally interesting is that what used to be a collosal statue sat on the edge of the island, facing the ocean. There has to be a reason for that!

I like your ideas. I’m always into the 4 toes discussions. One thought is that it doesn’t necessarily take millions of years for evolution to make an isolated group of humans different from one another, evidenced by all the different races we currently have that are fairly recent from an evolutionary standpoint. Basically if a small group of people, say a family or ?, with a dominant gene for a slight mutation (4 toes) were to be stranded on say an island, cut off from interbreeding with others, before long the entire population would have 4 toes, minus the occasional genetic mutation having 5 toes.

I’m as big a proponent of evolutionary theory as you can find, but that doesn’t make me support this lost theory. Take Homo erectus for example - they could potentially be our ancestor or at least a very close cousin of our ancestor, and they existed 1-2 million years ago. We have clear indications that they had 5 toed feet that are hardly distinguishable from the foot of Homo sapiens.

On a related note, it’s really annoying seeing the banner ads for the Expelled movie on this website. That infuriating piece of cinematic garbage is trying to set back years of scientific progress.

there used to be a post from not too long ago where someone said they were at a museum and saw some statues of greek gods that were depicted with 4 toes on their left foot. This was to depict their devine nature and serve as a mark of disctinction from statues depicting humans.

I tried searching but I couldn’t find the theory anymore.

Ouch, not sure how that second part is a related note, but your criticisms are understood and appreciated 4055. I did try looking around for any further ACTUAL evidence of my theory, but no 4 toed primates that I could find. My “millions of years” is also not a precise measurement, but gives the idea that it was a long time ago.

As I’ve said before, I know the writers are trying to include several pieces of real life scientific concepts, but there are going to be parts that don’t make sense in real life. Heck, they’ve done a good job with having Hanso reps on Jimmy Kimmel and Rachel Blake storm in on a Darlton interview; but it is fiction, so I try not to keep that in mind. This allows me to fill in the gaps of my theories.

have we seen the feet of the others? maybe they have 4 toes too.
