The question that will simply not go away until we have a definite answer!! Please don’t hate me for bringing it up for one zillionth time. Flag as Not a Theory as well ,if that seems the most appropriate place for it to be.
Update May 30,2008
We finally have the answer to Who is in the Coffin !
Five people that voted and said it was :

They were absolutely correct.

I have really believed till now that the person in the coffin is Michael! But… after reading this post of Obscure’s http://www.lost-theories.com/theories/2008/apr/07/man-science-vs-man-faith-coffi/ I began thinking that it could be Locke? So I renewed my search for an answer. Although there is no definite answer as to who it really is in my quest to try again to find an answer I turned to Google Search! Without revealing what I read ,This is the heading that led me to more information: Mar 5, 2008 … They may not need to ponder for long, since the Lost producers promised that we will find out who was in the coffin by the end of the season …
After reading the article, it listed four of the most likely popular suspects namely: John Locke,Michael,Ben, and Sayid Jarrah. You may think it to be someone other than those four.Although in my opinion the newspaper article does seem to rule out, it being a woman. I thought that since we were promised that by the end of this season we would finally know, that it might be a fun project to have a poll about it.
I will be the first to commit with my answer ,and I am changing my mind and saying it is Sayid. My reasons are as follows: The writers/producers may have gave us a red herring ,as to the location of the funeral home, that makes it seem like it is Michael. The evidence seems too obvious in favor of Michael. - Hoffs Drawlar ( Flash Forward ) Funeral Home - We also know that the show seems, to never do the most obvious. - We know that Kate told Jack in “Through the Looking Glass” “Why would I go to the funeral.” We also know now that Sayid started working for Ben, at sometime in the future, which could have turned Kate against him. - Since we don’t know how much in the future the flash forward in TTLG is,it could possibly have given time for Sayid to have found his lost love Nadia, and they could have had a son. - Sayid could have been at some time in the future very depressed that he had worked for Ben, or he could have even been killed and it was made to look like a suicide.
I have one other reason for my pick, but I am not revealing it as it is a possible spoiler if it turns out to be true. So go on record with: Who you really think is in the Coffin?
Disclaimer:There will not be any reward for a right answer, nor any penalty for a wrong one ! I should add ,that the writers have stated that it is someone that we already have known since the beginning !
I have decided to update this now as the time is inching closer to the revealing of who is in the coffin.
I have also posted the names, and who they voted for.

Posible Spoiler Ahead
The producers have said that by the end of season 4 ,one of “The Oceanic Six” will die… But,I am saying it is not necessarily one of them in the coffin.

I have been all over the map with who I thiink is in the coffin. First I thought it was Michael but I too thought that was just too obvious so then I thought maybe Ben but I just can’t think of any reason why Jack could care less about Ben and why Jack would assume that Kate would go to Ben’s funeral. I think it is John—the son could have been from his girlfriend that he met at the support group. I honestly hope it isn’t any of these people and we are completely surprised by who it is!
Good idea for a poll, KSJ, my vote stays with Michael, even though you seem to have something up your sleeve… lol
It’s either Michael or some new character that will become bigger than life in new show.
There are no other characters from NY I know.
Michael was obvious choice for the man on the boat, and voila! he was. So drop “too obvious” argument.
im going to go with michael in the coffin,if it were locke why wouldn,t kate go? michael gets my vote +1 for the poll idea
Well I don’t think it’s Sayid simply because the obituary said that he had a teenage son and as far as we know Sayid doesn’t have any children. If he did I would think he’d have mentioned having a son to someone - particularly Michael. Even if they are estranged I would think it would have come up.
Ben makes a lot of sense as does Michael. The key here is Hurley. Hurley traveled around the world to go to a grave that he knew was fake (Jin’s) and to see Sun’s daughter. This is guy who is very forgiving and clearly thinks of the other survivors as family. Even with everything that Ben has done to them, I would think that Hurley would still attend the funeral - especially if Ben is the one who gets them off the island (as I suspect he will). On the other hand, I could easily see the teenage son comment being a simple mistake in the obit since Alex could be a boy or girl’s name. It also makes sense that Ben’s death would push a desperate Jack over the edge since he knows the one person who could get him back to the island is now gone. (Obviously I’m a little torn on whether it’s Ben in the coffin.)
Then there’s Michael. There’s no way Hurley goes to that funeral unless it’s to stab Michael and make sure he’s dead. Hurley finally found what he believed was his true love with Libby and Michael murdered her. Hugo isn’t going to forgive him for that and certainly isn’t going to go to the funeral. But if it is Michael it doesn’t really explain Jack’s reaction to news of his death. Yes Michael managed to find a way back to the island, but if Ben is still alive Jack would still have some hope of finding a way back. I guess it still doesn’t work out for me that it would be Michael. I’m going to go with Ben being the one in the coffin.
My guess. Juliet. Why? I don’t know, but isn’t it a possibility?
I think it’s Mr. LaShade in the coffin. Hurley doesn’t show up because he remembers that Mr. LaShade killed Nikki on his favorite tv show. Kate doesn’t show up because she obviously didn’t watch much t.v. as a child and has no idea who Billy Dee is. Sayid doesn’t show up because he’s in Berlin doing adult things with Elsa. And Sun doesn’t show up because she is not up on American actors.
No one else shows up because Billy Dee has become a forgotten name and face in American film and television. Jack, however, has become a huge drunk and is a fan of Colt .45. He’s extremely sad that Billy Dee’s legacy has been forgotten and he will be put to rest without any fanfare. It’s heartbreaking.
+1 to billy its def appalo creed!
I have updated to show the tally, and if there are more votes, I will try to keep updating in the body of theory until the end of this season when we are finally supposed to get our answer!!
Billy_G_Oat, Now that’s what I’m talkin about. Fun, We do remember fun don’t we?
maybe its nobody they knew, because jack was so high he couldnt think in a clear state of mind. so when kate says why would i go to the funeral she was referring that since she didnt knew who was in the cofing she didnt have to go.
but i said its ben +1
FUN Yeah, I think I remember that. I know this was fun!
locke
that would be really funny if the person in the coffin was just some random guy, and jack was so f’d up he went and then wonders why Kate wasn’t there. That would really be the writers messing with us.
tinywanker,
Now that would be funny!
Nevertheless, based on what we think we know, I’d say Michael.
Michael
Michael.
Ben
Locke gets my vote KSJ.
It is Vincent and the Hurley Bird (the bird that said Hurley’s name on the island). They got into a death match so vicious that their bodies could not be seperated and thus had to be buried together.
That is why Jack said “neither”. He hated that dog.
:)
It is Michael, of course. I hate it, but it is him.
This outpouring of votes from all the many long time users on this site warms my Heart !! As another long time user on this site,(that has not been around much lately ) used to say, I Love you Guys…This is the way it should be…
Hey KSJ, nice post +1.
I have thought for a while and still think it is Locke. I have my own post on the subject (but it wasn’t very well recieved haha)
http://www.lost-theories.com/theories/2008/mar/02/must-read-coffin/
Irocz, I actually was going to try and update the post, to try and include some of the other posts about who is in the coffin, including yours. Although I am sure, as you know there are an abundance of theories to go through when you try to recognize similar theories ! There have been several on this topic, and I will be glad to finally put that question to rest when it happens. Thanks :-)
I know who I think it isn’t…Michael. I think it is a white man, and my best guess would be Ben. And by best, I mean totally unsure.
Sticking with mike
Michael but could be Bernard … ok Michael
this is from one of my serious, not joking around post…….
BEN……The newspaper says that it is John Lantham…..We know how these creators of lost like to use famous mathematicians and philosphers well…John/ Jeremy Bentham was a famous philospher…..The creators took the BEN out and took out the LAN…..
Also did anyone notice that the funeral parlors name Hoffs/Drawler was an anagram for Flash Forward..And does the book lying next to the coffin look like Bens Dairy or is that just me reading too much into this stuff…I love this show!!!
I am going with Michael.
I am leaning toward Ben. Michael would not be a suprise, but Ben feels right to me. In that mobisode where Jack and Ben are playing chess he tells Jack he may want to return to the island someday as he was leaving on the Sub and that he wouldn’t be able to. Jack doesn’t seem to care about this at the time. I think Ben was Jack’s last shot at getting back. I know it says in the news article that whoever it is hung themself, Maybe John Locke took Ben’s leader role on the island and the island was done with Ben so maybe he could kill himself. Does Ben have a son? Maybe. We don’t know yet. Could it be Sayid? Maybe. That is why I love this show. Whomever it is I hope it will not be a let down.
In case it was unclear my vote is: Ben
katesawjack +1 from me.
Sandamtodd, Thanks for voting ! For a minute there, I thought I might have another person to join me in thinking it is Sayid ! But I’m beginning to think I will be the only one that does. I really do have a good reason to believe it might be him though ! I think??? lol
I’ve never ever ever ever formed an opinion until now about who is in the coffin.
But just for the heck of it, I’m going with Micheal. +1
i had a theroy of Claire but my vote will go to Ben this time!
When Through The Looking Glass aired in May 2007 it wasn´t official that Harold Perrineau returns to Lost. So my guess is, that the producers didn´t put Michael in that coffin. At least not then.
If I consider the newspaper clipping as given, then the coffin´s candidate had killed himself. We all know, that Locke had serious mental issues, before getting to the island. Therefore I think, if he ever leaves this beloved place, he´ll be forced by someone or something - this would put him back into his former depressive state. Locke inclines to suicide attempts, if being in despair (also seen in TTLG, when he keeps the dead DI people company in that ditch).
Next option is Mr. Linus: Sorry, but I can´t imagine a suicidal Ben. Him in that coffin would only make sense, if he´s faking his own death.
My conclusion: When TTLG was produced, I think it was meant to be Locke. But with the return of Michael, the producers opened the way to new eventualities. They did a very good job with that mystery.
So, what´s my choice? Well, I say, it´s Michael.
my vote goes to micheal. mainly because i wont miss him that much so i really hope it is him. lol. hope it isnt ben or locke cos they are both really interesting characters and they should be on the island.
but then, as long as it isnt sawyer, i wont really mind who it is. just please let sawyer live!!!!!
Ben. Makes sense because he may have been Jacks way of getting back onto the island…and Kate doesn’t want to go back and therefore doesn’t care…
Maybe Jack isn’t mourning Ben, but mourning that he has no way of getting back to the island!
I’m going to retract my previous guess of Locke and my new prediction is…
Lapidus.
His guilt about whatever happens during the rescue combined with his survivors guilt due to his friend the pilot dying instead of him will drive him to suicide and that will be Jacks best chance of getting back to the island gone. Kate wouldn’t go to the funeral as she didn’t really know him and for what ever goes down in the finale.
wtf, I like your reasoning, but I am pretty sure that the PTB have said … It is someone we have known from the beginning. But I changed your vote anyway. I may change mine before we finally know the answer for sure.lol
My first instinct was Ben, and I’ve seen nothing since that disputes my complete and utter gut-feeling guess. So I go with Ben.
As usual, I am pretty late on voting but as I have said in roughly 3,649 of my posts I think it is Ben. See any one of my too many posts on this subject for the reson why.
Unless its a polar bear :)
+1 for KSJ just for always being nice on this site!
+1
I’m gonna go with Locke.
I say Ben.

MIles Straume has obviously recieved 77 votes.
highbrow, But only one counts. ;-)
Hey Katesawjack im with ya. Sayid all the way. It just fits.
2 votes for Sayid +1
Yay Stickman, Someone finally agrees with me.Thanks for the vote. :)
