Chapter Seven: Jacob One of the most interesting characters on the show is Jacob. I think that Jacob was someone who was extremely connected to the island, just as Ben and Locke are. Jacob landed on the island with the Black Rock in 1881 and was a crewmember on board. I think this for a few reasons that I will mention later, but also because of the pirate like clothes, similar to those of Richard Alpert’s, that we see when we caught a brief glimpse of Jacob. Jacob led the remaining crewmembers that stayed on the island and together they settled on the island. They built houses (like Jacob’s cabin) and forts that they lived in and they lived together on the island, not aging and peaceful, until the Dharma Initiative arrived. I’m not sure exactly what happened, if it was voluntary or not, but I think that when the incident occurred, Jacob was severely affected in some way. He became in a sense, stuck in space-time, almost like an unknown quantum particle, fluctuating between dimensions and different wavelengths. Jacob’s followers were left helpless while he was in this state, so they began to search for someone who also had a special connection with the island and would be able to contact Jacob. This person happened to be Ben. Ben was able to speak with Jacob and thus relay his messages to the rest of ‘the Hostiles’. Ben thus became the default leader of the hostiles while Jacob was incapacitated. Ben used this power for his own gain, however. He was able to manipulate the information that Jacob shared with him about the island to gain a greater hold over the other hostiles. When Locke comes to the island, we immediately see that Ben is scared of him because of his connection with the island. When Ben brings Locke to meet Jacob, Jacob asks Locke to help him because he know that Ben has betrayed him and has abandoned efforts to save Jacob from the in flux state that he is in. I think that in the end of the show, Locke will end up killing Jacob, which Jacob is probably asking for anyway and in the process, Locke himself will die, thus staying with the island forever.
Chapter Seven.Five: Now, here I go into very deep speculation, but I think that it is all very interesting and plausible. Many people don’t know this, but Aaron is actually the great great grandson of Jacob in the bible. Aaron was the brother of Moses and also his ‘speaker’ in the bible since Moses did not speak well to crowds and the court. Somehow, I think, Aaron and Jacob are related. I’m guessing that Jacob had a child back home in Europe, who went on to give birth to Christian Shepherd. We also know that Christian Shepherd is the grandfather of Aaron. So, if this is true, Claire’s baby Aaron would also be the great great grandson of the Jacob of the island! Other evidence points to this as well. Christian Shepherd has ‘Christian’ in his name and we also saw a brief glimpse of him sitting in the rocking chair of the cabin in season four. All this seems a little too much to be a mere coincidence to me. I’m not sure exactly what Aaron’s role in the show is, seeing as he’s a baby and not really able to be articulate like the Aaron of the bible, but it will be interesting to see where this goes. Even deeper in the speculation river is the possibility that there is a prophecy floating around that a descendent of the island’s Jacob would go on to do something extraordinary, perhaps destroy the island or something of that nature. Ben could have heard this prophecy and then thought that this descendent was Locke because of his special connection with the island. This is why Ben tried to kill Locke and is so intent on ruining Locke.
Chapter Eight: Ben and the Purge Ben came to the island as a child with his father and we know that he was introduced to Richard Alpert early on. Disgruntled with his father and all of the Dharma Initiative, in 1987 Ben purged the island, killing all members of the Initiative. Ben most likely then blackmailed the mainland Dharma Initiative, threatening to destroy the island if they did not send him what he wanted – more personnel (Kelvin, Radzinsky, Mikhail, etc…) and supplies (food, medicine, clothes, etc…). We know that the mainland Dharma Initiative is still in contact with the island because of the food drop the losties received at the hatch. Ben and the other Hostiles then moved into the original Dharma camp and took control of the Island, while keeping the important stations manned. These include people pressing the button at The Swan to release the buildup of electromagnetic energy as well as Mikhail working at The Flame to keep contact with the mainland. Useless stations such as The Staff and The Pearl were abandoned. Ben is so rich because of his ability to blackmail the Hanso Foundation/Dharma Initiative. Through the submarine or other means, he and others (Tom for example) are able to leave the island and take care of things on the mainland.
Chapter Ten: Discontinuation of the Dharma Initiative On Jimmy Kimmel Live, David McIntyre, an employee of the Hanso Foundation, claimed that the Dharma Initiative was discontinued in 1987, most likely because of the purge started by Ben. This is a lie, however, and Dharma continued to work underground.
Chapter Eleven: Charles Widmore In 1995, we know that Charles Widmore bought the Black Rock Captain’s log from Tovar Hanso. Tovar is probably related to Alvar but I am not sure yet why he was selling the log. I don’t know how, but for some reason Charles Widmore knew about the island and that it had very special properties, including the slowdown of aging. Once he found that the Captain’s log was going up for auction, he knew that he would be able to use the coordinates in the log to find the island. Widmore wished to use the island for commercial gain and perhaps even to give himself immortality. Widmore then teamed up with Sun’s father, Mr. Paik, who was able to build Charles Widmore a boat and he also corresponded with Thomas Mittlewerk, a scientist who was Alvar Hanso’s second in command. Together, the three of them plotted to overthrow Alvar Hanso, take control of the Hanso Foundation, and take over the island for themselves.
Chapter Twelve: The Overthrow of Alvar Hanso In later 2004, Thomas Mittlewerk, overthrew Alvar Hanso and took control of the Hanso Foundation. He put Alvar under house arrest and took complete control of the company. Unlike Alvar’s ideal humanitarian interests, however, Mittlewerk’s plan was to use the power of the island and the research done by the Dharma initiatives to take over the world. We know that in one of the ARG videos Mittlewerk commissioned the use of a virus to decimate a small Sri Lankan village. I believe that this is connected somehow to the “virus” and antidote on the island. Once Mittlewerk had control, he commissioned Charles Widmore to send a team to the island to kill all of its inhabitants. He wanted to capture Ben, however, because he knew of Ben’s connection with the island and wanted to use Ben to tap into the island’s supernatural resources. Charles Widmore also placed the fake Oceanic Flight 815 plane in the Sunda Trench to take public attention away form the island lest anyone discover where the plane had actually crashed.
Chapter Thirteen: The Oceanic Six 1. Jack 2. Kate 3. Sun 4. Hurley 5. Sayid 6. Aaron? I think that the Oceanic Six were ultimately the people who managed to get on the freighter and were then brought to an island near the Sunda Trench under order of Charles Widmore. This way, the general public thinks that it was just a lucky accident that these six passengers survived and thought nothing else of the situation. Jack refuses to see Aaron simply because he knows that Aaron is Claire’s and not Kate’s baby. I’m not sure if he realizes yet that Aaron is his nephew, but that could also be a contributing reason as to why Jack won’t see him. Claire is most likely dead because it would take a lot to separate her from her baby.
Chapter Fourteen: Why Sayid is Working for Ben? We know that Ben is a very powerful man and has his ways to escape and get his way. Somehow he managed to get off the island with the Oceanic Six and managed to stay in contact with some of the Oceanic Six, including Sayid. The people that Ben is having Sayid kill are actually members of the Hanso Foundation that had a part in the raiding of the island led by Charles Widmore. Sayid is the perfect killer for Ben because of his previous experience in the military and he is equally bitter at the men on the list because of their role in screwing up his life.
Chapter Fifteen: Who’s in the Casket? I think that the person in the casket is Michael. There is not much evidence yet to point to this, but I think that he makes the most sense out of people. First of all, the funeral parlor is in a run-down black neighborhood and we know that Michael was not well off and could have likely moved to the slums after escaping from the freighter. Also, nobody would have wanted to go to Michael’s funeral, because he did, after all, kill Ana Lucia and Libby, both of who were close to the Oceanic Six. Walt was most likely still not speaking to him and it is not unlikely that his mother had died. Nobody even knew about Michael either because he was not an official member of the Oceanic Six. He merely disappeared off the freighter and lived indiscreetly in the United States like he did the first time he escaped the island. For those who would argue against this using the newspaper clipping as evidence should know that the producers have said that the clipping should not be considered an actual prop and that there would be a ‘real’ clipping in later episodes.
Chapter Sixteen: The Orchid The producers have mentioned that the Orchid video is going to be very important for upcoming episodes in season 4. The Orchid is a fake botanical research station that does research in quantum physics, especially the Casimir Effect. The research they are doing with the rabbits seems to be something like the time travel that takes place in ‘Timeline’ by Michael Crichton. In the video, it seems as though they set the time travel shift not far back enough and the rabbit appeared at the same time as the other rabbit was in the room. I think the reason the two rabbits aren’t supposed to see each other is a bit tricky and this is also the reason that the first incident occurred. With quantum physics, once you attempt to observe a particle, it loses its uncertainty and cements its course in history. Otherwise, all particles have at least an extremely miniscule of being at any point in the universe at any given time, although the probability of this decreases the farther away from the median you get. If the rabbits had seen each other then, this would cause a problem with space-time because the rabbits aren’t allowed to be in two places at once. The only reason they are allowed to exist simultaneously is because they have not observed each other yet. I’m not sure exactly what this effect will have on space-time itself, but whatever it is it is probably devastating. My guess is that they had 12 rabbits, two each numbered 4, 8, 15, 16, 23, 42. From the Orchid Video we saw the #15 rabbit and in an episode in season three we see Ben holding the #8 rabbit. It’s a little bit of a coincidence if those two numbers are completely independent of the six rabbits. I don’t think that the numbers have anything to do with the experiments, but it is just a little joke that the Dharma Initiative played. The Polar Bear is also another example of this time travel experimenting. The Polar Bear ended up in Tunisia, I think, because they sent it so far back in time that the latitude and longitude the island used to be at is now in Tunisia. Another note. Three of the ARG videos featured the same scientist with different names. We know him as Dr. Marvin Candle, Dr. Mark Wickmund, and Dr. Edgar Halowax. All of these names: candle, wick, wax, have to do with candles and such. This probably has some meaning but I’m not really sure what it is yet.
wow +1
Definately plausable +1
the best laid out work i have seen in a long time
Congratulations!
+1 Great read. Good work
A well-deserved +1.
I love the idea that Alpert was one of the original crew of the Black Rock. That makes him about 127 years old. I have always kinda thought that it would be cool if he was hundreds of years old, as well. Now you give me a plausible explanation. Richard is a HUGE key to this story, I think. His backstory I would love to see!
Did you also know that in the Bible, Benjamin is the name of Jacob’s son? Some people speculate that Ben is really Aaron’s grandfather (which would make Jacob Aaron’s great grandfather if Ben is Jacob’s son) by way of Claire’s ex-boyfriend, Thomas (I think his name was.) I dont know if I buy off on all of that just because Ben and Thomas kinda look alike, but interesting coincidences if not. (sorry for all of the “cousin’s husband’s best friend’s girlfriend’s second cousin twice removed stuff, haha.)
I LOVE the idea that you presented about how the polar bear landed in Tunisia! Great idea. They sent it back so far in time that the continents are not where they are now and it ended up there. Nice.
What do you think the ash around Jacob’s cabin is for?
I agree that it is Michael in the coffin and I agree that Claire dies - probably during the rescue attempt itself.
I think you may be my new favorite theorist (sorry AC) I like nearly everything you said in both parts to this theory. Now I am gonna have to go see if you have others….
MountainDew, another +1 and well deserved. Many have tried to tie Aaron to Jacob, but you offer the most logical explanation I’ve read so far!
Oh yeah, and what do you think of the healing properties of the island? I understand the not aging, but what about the healing? Sorry to bombard you with questions but you seem to sort of be on a plane that I can agree with and understand. I need answers!! :P
Very good… but you contradicted yourself within your two theories… in part one you say the Dharma had stations throughout the world including Tunisia and the Island being another.. Here at the end of Part Two, you say “The Polar Bear ended up in Tunisia, I think, because they sent it so far back in time…”
No biggie… I just think it goes to show that there is a lot of holes in LOST we will all be surprised to see. Like the part about Aaron being related to Jacob…
+1. Lots of information and lots of support.
BTW, you didn’t used to go by the name n_ggers annoy me, did you? He was also a big south park fan. If not, then welcome to the site. If you did, kudos for finally changing your name to something a little…….. less racist, i guess.
Fantastic +1 on both
MountainDew, +1 As I previously stated in your”Part 1 Complete Theory”,I like the way you formatted it into chapter form. Very excellent work, I just hope some of it is not true, especially about Claire being dead.
I think that there are definitely a lot more subtle connections with the bible in the whole story and I’m guessing that this will have greater relevance in future episodes, so I’m excited to see where it goes.
Another theory that I read discussed the possibility that the ash around Jacob’s cabin is a mechanism put in place by Ben to keep Jacob contained in the ring of ash. I feel as though the ash has some sort of magnetic property that affects the electromagnetic field that engulfs Jacob, preventing him from moving outside of the circle. Jacob may be all powerful but he is not able to do much because he is limited in such a small part of the island.
I’m not entirely sure about the healing properties of the island yet. I have a few ideas developing but hopefully in my third part I’ll have a more detailed explanation about the babies and healing.
I also realize that I contradicted myself in the two parts. I originally thought that there were multiple dharma stations, but have since changed my mind. I think that the only dharma station is the one on the island and I’m going to stick with the polar bear theory that I presented in this part.
And no, I never used to go by n_ggers annoy me, lol, I’m completely new here, but yes, I do love south park. And thanks to everyone for all the comments and support, its really helpful.
I think you are probably perfectly correct about Jacob/Aaron relationship. I am not convinced Aaron is the 6th member of Oceanic 6 as he wasn’t a passenger (I know you put him with a question mark). I wonder whether the 6th person is yet to be revealed.
Well, it looks like you’ve included Tovar (or Tovart…whatever) into part 2, so you can probably ignore that comment on part 1. Some very good points in here though. I like it more than part 1, though there are some inconsistencies.
I like chapter 16 where you talk about the states of a particle not being conclusive until they are observed. Sounds a lot like Shroedinger’s cat come to think of it. I also like the concept of the Polar bear being sent so far into the past that it landed in Tunisia, prior to a huge shift of the continents, just golden right there.
I’m not sure about the explanation as to why Jack will not see Aaron. Why would he not want to see him because he is Claire’s baby and not Kate’s? Doesn’t make much sense. I think that Jack was somehow responsible for Claire’s death, and it’s this guilt that keeps him from wanting to see Aaron.
+1, and a million theoretical dollars to you as well, I stole it from the numa numa kid!
good theory
Appolo: Ben’s dad was Roger, not Jacob. Ben killed his pop in the VW van with his deathgas, remember?
great theory!! well-thought out and well supported. welcome!!
what can I say, that was some enjoyable reading! I’m going back to read part 1 now! +1 :)
There is no relevance of the name “Christian” to the biblical succession of Prophets, Abrahaam, Jacob, Moses and Aaron.
The usage of those names is just for tickling, same way references to the prominent scientists and philosophers is.
The only connection here is Jacob and Aaron, but again, as I said, it is for tickling.
The whole theorem resembles me how Ptolemeus was building his epicycles to fit the visible orbits of planets to his Geocentric universe.
Nice!! I will have to read the first part..+1 from me.
you haven’t explained about the dogs….
