i’ve been meaning to post this the last few day but afraid it might seem way off base.
when did desmond’s past consiousness leave his present body? which desmond spoke to penny on the phone? where did his present consiousness go during all of this? is it back yet?
the following two episodes give no verbal clues that his present consiousness is back. could it still be the 1996 desmond on the boat?

I think his consciousness should be back, since he has established his constant, right? But good point in asking “is he really back?” +1
i’m not sure that faraday meant that establishing a constant would fix it all. only that it would prevent him from dying like eloise and minkowski.
also, why didn’t faraday serve as desmond’s constant. if desmond served as faraday’s one would think that the reverse would work too. and would have been automatic. but then i guess it would have been a short episode.
+1 StoneGiant, This is the end transcript from Lostpedia of “The Constant” : [Static cuts them off.] SAYID: I’m sorry. The power source went dead, it’s all we have. desmond: Thank you, Sayid. It was enough. SAYID: Are you alright now? desmond: Aye. I’m perfect.
I believe he was able to be ,back to his present self, after his Constant was established as Penny, and he talked to her!
I could be wrong here (again) but didnt Daniel say that your constant had to be someone/something that you truly cared about or something like that?
i think desmond went back to normal straight away, as soon as he heard pennys voice because when she asked him where he has been for the last 8 years, he says on an island. he would not say this if he hadnt gone back to normal as he would not know that he had been on an island.
also, another reason dan cant be desmonds constant (aside from the fact it has to be someone you care about) is because i think they had the walkie talkie thing taken away, so he wouldn’t have been able to contact him again after the first time.
appolo - yes faraday said that, but did faraday really care for desmond to be his own constant?
belle - 1996 des knew he was on an island because sayid told him, and he told faraday that when he returned to 1996.
kate - im not sure that perfect meant perfect. wouldn’t his present consciousness have kicked in and said, “hey where am i, why do i have a phone to my ear?”
but i’m fuzzy on all of this, thanks for the comments guys. also, do you guys think it’s imprtant where his present consciousness went during all of this? or was it just blacked out? a future episode maybe
Maybe by des visiting Daniel in the past and giving him the correct coordinates to make his mind machine work was significant enough to Dan to make des his constant. He knew he would see des again but forgot this due to not protecting his head during all of his experiments.
Many of the theories are based on extending plot tricks that has been already used by writers. THat’s naive. It won’t play.
Think of something new.
As for original question, the writers made it pretty clear that it was modern day Des, by giving him the dialog with Sayyid:
— Thatnk you, Sayyid (sic!) — Are you ok now? — [affirmative]
Question closed. Those positive + votes near not really useful posts are really misleading. I would appreciate if everybody pull it together and vote for real theories.
this stuff about “real theories” has a real chilling effect
There are some questions worthy of addressing here (particularly to do with his consciousness). If I get chance I’ll write the post I’ve been meaning to write that gets into these matters. . .!
Past Desmond did not recognise Sayid so when Des said “Yes , Sayid, I am okay ” (or whatever) that was to indicate that present Des was back.
I agree, Jackseyes. There was no hint in his voice or responses that would indicate he was not really back. I still like the kind of thinking that went behind these questions, though.
thanks appolo
