I think that Michael can not kill himself because of the time travel (like what Desmond experienced). If Michael’s future self has a purpose - something to accomplish than Michael’s past self can not die which is why the gun wouldn’t fire. Daniel said to Desmond that you can not change the future; so it’s not necessarily the Island that is keeping him alive but time consistency

I kind of agree. my problem is that if everything is fated in our existences, why bother doing or not doing anything, if the universe is going to correct our poor decisions/accidents to make sure everything happens according to fate. I just like free will too much to believe it won’t have some place in the Lost mythology.

Wait… I have a genius idea what keeps Michael alive!

It’s the script! The writers want to preserve him for future episodes! Yo-hoo!

I don’t understand why people refuse to listen to the show when they DO give answers. The Island won’t let Micheal die because he still has work to do. It doesn’t need to be complicated.

Aah the whole fate vs free will argument again!

I know which camp I sit in (a similar one to lockeko’s) however the more I see of the show the more I believe it is going to have to go down the route or predetermined fate. When you think about time travel (and yes it makes my head hurt too), the way of it all making sense is if we do actually all live our lives in a pre-set way. Sure we all make decisions that will affect our lives in small ways, but the big things we do or do not do are governed by fate. I think when you start thinking about time travel - forwards and back - it all becomes a lot easier to handle, when you can’t change big things in your past or future, because fate wont allow it.

So perhaps its a knowledge of this course correction that occurs in life that the Others are aware of and can use it to their advantage. Like convincing Michael that the “island” is behind his apparent immortality, when in fact it is fate.

I think I might post a theory on this actually. Because my head has just filled with loads of stuff! :-) +1
