The wispers are basically just dead people or ghosts talking to each other while observing the losties. If you were ever to decifer these wispers you can hear obvious connections from the death of someone close to the person hearing them to the person who died. for exampe, in season 1 when sawyer first hears the wispers after chasing the boar, the quote “it will all come back to you” or somethig like that which cames from the last words of the shrimp guy he killed. that means his soul is on the island haunting sawyer. also, when shannon hears the wispers you can hear a male voice mentionign her name a few times which is most likely boon trying to speak to her.

the wispers often have obvious voices attached to them too. Jack hear the wispers, if you decifer them, you can hear christians voice among it. Now i believe that christian is in between dead and alive. for example, his body has never been found, so he can use both his ghost form wich is the wispers, and his projection of his body, which is what jack sees when he chases his dad around the island. also in jacobs cabain, i do not belive christian is jacob, but merely captured in the same state as jacob then. Now this may be even more farfetched then what i am saying, but smokey can also have a connection with these wispers. only the difference is i feel that he is the dark side of the spirits. Loche has said “I looked into the eye of this island, and what I saw was beautiful.” I think he says this because he didnt see the smokey that we know of, he saw a bright smokey. these were the souls that were good and pure compared to the dark ones in smokey. So maybe there is a white smokey, who knows? So anyway, the wispers are not the “others” that we know of like roussou said, they are just the voices of the dead talking amongst themselves, which really freak out the losties.

I really like your theory and it makes a lot of sence. I’ve just started to watch LOST series 2 on DVD (started watching it late ha ha) and when I saw the black smoke that is believed to be ‘the monster’ I immeadatly thought of dead spirits. I like your view on Locke’s remark ‘what he saw was beatiful’ There maybe white smoke, but then just before Jack resuces him and throws dynamite into the hole - black smoke emergies. Maybe the white smoke protects and the black kills? - That would make sence?

good thoughts and well presented. im a bit undecided on there being a white smokey but i suppose on the other hand it would fit into the whole black/white theme that is going on. +1

    I don’t think there’s a white smokey—yet
