This is my first post I hope everyone likes it.
Everyone just assumes that lost is all about paranormal things, I like to think ‘out side the box’, and sometimes I think that maybe there is no box at all but Ben was just conning Locke when he said that. But I digress, this theory is all about my favourite lost thing, the whispers!
People have said ghosts, people lost in time, and more ghosts and that is what the whispers are, but I don’t think it is any of those things.
I think that Ben has rigged the jungle the microphones and speakers to use hypnotic suggestion on people. I’ve seen on the internet transcripts of what is said in the whispers but I think these are complete red herrings.
I think that Ben/others whisper things and some of the speakers make eerie wind noises to spook people in the jungle and this causes their right brain (this is the part of the brain you use when asleep you don’t normally use it when awake) switch on and snatch control from the left brain.
To prove this I will give examples of what Ben/others might have said to losties during whispers in episodes, starting with the most recent.
The Other Woman - Juliet in the sees Harper who tells her she must kill the freighter people at the tempest.
Others voices over speakers “Juliet, juliet! Its me, your subconcious speaking! Look, look! Harper is there! And she is telling you that the freighter people are at the tempest and going to release the gas! You must kill them!”
Using theses subtle suggestions the others sucessfully give Juliet the mission to stop the freighter people at the tempest.
Man behind the curtain - Ben sees his mother outside barracks.
“Ben! Ben! Looks its your mother! I know shes dead, never mind that, look shes there, listen to her! She has important things to say!”
Ben is hypnotised into seeing his mother through the power of suggestion.
Live together, die alone. - Jack, Sawyer, Kate and Hurley hear whispers shortly before being tasered by the others.
“Wait whats that sound? Oh its just nothing, don’t worry about it, don’t go to the smoke wait here for a bit itl be fine, who am I? I’m that voice in your head that makes all the good decisions, so trust me! Hey James remember when you shot that guy in Austrailia? Well it wasn’t me who told you to do that, I tried to stop you so listen to me this time!”
If subtlety fails the whispers will go for the hard sell, as they are all ultimately controlled by Ben. (Richard controlled them before Ben was in charge)
Thanks for reading my first theory, now that I have discovered this I will go back through old episodes and figure out what the whispers are saying in each and post it here when done. I have had fun reading some good theories here and I am sure contributing my own will be even more fun.

Don’t worry about Tracker, Frankly. While MOST people are extremely polite, respectful and courteous when disagreeing with a theory you may post, there are always a few people lacking class and tact. You just need to ignore them.
I like your creative take on the whispers, but I don’t think that it is Ben “Benipulating” peoples minds through their subconcious.

Not 100% crazy about your thoughts, at least I dig that you’re a Smiths fan. The whispers are something that we are owed an explanation to.

uhm, ok is this like where you watch Alice in Wonderland and play pink floyd and the screams match up like an hour into the movie or something?
good first theory! very creative and imaginative +1.
however, i’m not so sure if the others are behind the whispers for one reason. I listened to the whispers in The beginning of the end and read the transcript from people who have the technology to know exactly what is being said, and it sounds alot like christians voice in the whispers. at one point he says, “sarah, is someone coming?”.
so unless, christian and the others have some kind of connection then i’m not sure that the others have anything to do with the whispers.
i guess we will just have to wait and see!

In a general sense, the whispers’ transcripts (as KSJ has linked to) betray the notion they are trying to ‘effect’ what is happening. It’s been remarked before, but the voices seem to speak amongst themselves like a chattering audience witnessing what’s happening and commenting on it, like a group of people sitting in a cinema watching a film. Their words exert no power over events.
And I would also remind you of Sawyer’s experience with the whispers during Season One. Distinctly, Frank Duckett’s voice (the man he shot days before he boarded Oceanic 815) can be heard saying, “It’ll come back around.” (This has always been a problem ‘whisper’ for anyone trying to theorise generally about the whispers as it is the voice of a dead person that was never on the Island.)
Frankly, I understand your reasoning. When you invest in something you want a reasonable pay off. I hope they meet us in the middle :)
