The Others (specifically Ben) obviously have control over the entire island, and know what’s going on on all parts of the island at all times. I believe the reason for this is that there are hidden cameras, microphones, and speakers all over the island. ((Think back to Kate and Sawyer in the cages… they were being watched.)).
I believe when the Losties hear whispering, the whispering is coming from hidden speakers (controlled by Ben).
When the Losties hear whispering, they are temporarily hypnotized and then begin to hallucinate.
For example, in “the other woman”, when Juliette heard the whispers and “saw” Goodwin’s wife, I don’t believe Goodwin’s wife was actually there. I think Juliette hallucinated the whole thing. There is hypnosis in the whispers, and Ben is controlling all of this.
Thoughts???

If Juliette hallucinated it, why did Jack see her too? And why was she wet from the rain?
I ask the same kavefish asked: If Juliette hallucinated it, why did Jack see her too? Nice idea.
Jack saw her too? I don’t remember that.
I think her being wet from the rain is irrelevant.
Another example for me thinking the events happening immediately after the whispers are a hallucination is because of the walt hallucination. He is talking backwards. In real life, people don’t talk backwards. In a hallucination, perhaps they do…
I just really believe that there has to be a logical explanation for the whispers. I don’t think it has anything to do with the island’s ‘special powers’.
Goodwin’s wife was definitely, there not a hallucination. The others use the whispers to confuse their prey. You always hears the whispers first then they appear. When they leave they disappear just as quickly. Goodwin’s wife did it. When Micheal brings Jack, Kate, Hurley and Sawyer to them, the others used the whispers before taking them captive. Even Walt’s ghost uses the whispers before he appears to Shannon.
Des is hot: (eeewwww btw) I agree that it would be nice to have some of the mysteries turn out to be technology vs. magic. I have invested a lot in the show and when we are talking about smoke monsters, whispers, appearances of the dead, ect…..I hope we get an explanation I can buy. Nice idea on the speakers….not sure about “hallucinations” though.
Des is hot, welcome to the site! I have to agree with blonde on this one. Nice idea on the speakers… not buying the hallucinations.
However, well written and well thought out first theory!
I like the theory that the Island is riddled with underground tunnels and rooms. The whispers are simply the sound of the Others arguing over what to do next - or who buys lunch - and it escapes through various ventilation ducts (hidden in tree trunks).
The monster also is generated from these underground retreats - black powder, hydraulic winches, and just plain smoke account for the special effects.
People mysteriously appear and disappear by being placed on camoflaged lifts. I’m surprised we haven’t heard suppressed laughter and giggles from below as the Others watch the Losties’ shock, awe, and bewilderment at these “apparitions”.
It’s all a matter of smoke, mirrors, and a few strategically placed animatronic devices.
I think the whispers are apart of the “ghosts” that keep popping up on the island. If there is an ability to so-called WARP, why couldnt the whispers be from the people who are doing it? People are getting caught up in TIME, but cant find their way back from it, maybe they are stuck…. in limbo, so to say. I am LOST!!!!! LOL good theory though!
