Ive read a number of ideas and theories about who or what Jacob actually is.Firstly,I don’t believe that it is Jack or Chrisitan,there is some sort of connection between the 3,but i believe they are totally seperate.

To me,Jacob was/is the hightest ranking member of the ‘hostiles’.He came the island possibly on the Black rock or by some other way that we do not know yet.If he did infact arrive via the black rock,then maybe the island’s ‘special powers’ are what gave him long lasting life.

Now here is where it gets a bit complicated.As he was invisible in the cabin when he met locke,I think that his body died after so long as it became so old,but the ‘special powers’ of the island allowed him to live on in the form which we saw in the cabin.

Now the only way for him to communicate with his ‘hostile group’ (now the others) is through Ben,who in turn uses this position to his advantage.Jacob is growing tired of his orders being ignored by Ben and so asks Locke to ‘help him’.This would explain why Jacob grew angry when Ben was asking what Locke heard,at first he was pleased that Ben had brought someone else to the cabin,thus remained calm.

I know a few of these points have been briefly mentioned before,and this theory does not explain why Christian appears in the cabin later on,but its a theory ive been thinking of lately,let me know what you think of it,thanks.

P.S I also believe that Richard has a stong link to Jacob,but for some reason Ben has found a way to stop communication between the two,well at least while he was ‘Leader’

P.P.S The fact that the actor who plays Richard (Nestor Carbonell) became involved in other projects may hav forced the producers into changing things slightly.
