Ghost Buster’s mission
Each member of the freighties were chosen for their special talents or connections to the Island. Faraday for his knowledge of time travel and electromagnetics. Charlotte for her knowledge of dharma. On this logic. perhaps Widmore is aware of the “undead” or Jacob . Miles the resident ghost buster is there to communicate with Jacob.

Maybe, and this is a stretch but there does seem to be an unstated premise that once a person is dead then they always tell the truth. So maybe they send Miles along to be able to determine the truth. Handy for Kate that he came along, or else it would have looked like Kate killed Naomi. It could also be that his task is to speak to someone who may be dead from the flight. Maybe Nikki or Paulo, but if they are not dead … (it is possible, that one or both escaped and that they returned to the question mark hatch where they could observe what was happening, until the Swan Hatch blew up) then Miles will have to assume he is losing his touch or that Nikki and Paulo are not very nice ghosts. Welcome to the club Miles.
So maybe his ghost whispering skills may have more to do with finding information rather than for him to have a nice chat with Jacob.

a little off topic, but i found it to be very interesting that miles knew that michael wasn’t who he said he was when he got on the freighter. i’m not entirely convinced that he is there to communicate with jacob, but i do think he knows a lot more about what is going on than anybody else on the freighter
I think Libby’s some how attached to Michael and she is the one that told Miles that he wasn’t who he said he was.
i think that all the freighties have a role to play in a well planned operation. each provides an ability that will be needed to complete each stage of the plot. miles probably provides for the reconisence by reading minds and communication with spirits.
I still think that the changes in the picture frames during Miles’ “ghostbusting” were shown specifically to demonstrate that a timeshift event had occurred as opposed to speaking to the dead. He may of course have mindshifted back to when the boy was alive.
+1. I commented on someone elses thread that I thought miles was chosen for the mission to find and communicate with Jacob, so I agree with you! Good comments too.
I agree - there to talk to Jacob and the ghosts on the island (who are related to Jacob). I also dabbled with the idea that maybe he was there to “free” Jacob from whatever “prison” he is in. Whatever with that ash surrounding the cabin and the “help me” comment to Locke. Not sure though.

I am not sure if I think Jacob is dead. I dont think of Jacob as a person who would be alive or dead. I think of Jacob as the island’s manifestation of itself. The ghosts of others (who are dead) may have sort of “become part of the island” and therefore - part of Jacob. I think Miles is there to tap into Jacob and either free him or communicate with him in some way.
yeah, but Miles, like the ghostwhisperer, is all about helping spirits cross over. so what happens if jacob crosses over.
ooooooh, tinywanker. That would be cool! Maybe that IS what he is there for. If Jacob crossed over (to heaven, hell, wherever) does that mean he would not be on the island anymore?
