My guess is that they [survivors] may just join The Others in the fight against the agents of Cain, and then finally, with the destruction of Cain’s line, Jack becomes the supposed Redeemer and the leader of the good line of Seth

Apologies for the fact that this is a very long drawn theory that requires some time to read, but given all the different factors, it was hard to explain it any other way…
The island is the Garden of Eden/portal to heaven.
The Bible tells of the birth of a third son to Adam and Eve – Seth, who is supposed to be a replacement for Abel (who was obviously killed by his brother Cain). From then on two genealogical lines form – one for Cain, called the Seed of the Serpent (the bad people), and one for Seth, the Seed of Adam (the good people). In basic terms, this is the start of the human race.
It is interesting to mention that whilst Cain was a farmer, Abel (whom Seth replaces) was a shepherd.
From the line of Seth also comes Noah and, further down, Jacob.
The Bible claims that a Great Flood would come and the line of Cain would perish along with “the accomplishments of their earth-centred civilization”. From the line of Seth only Noah and his family were found to be faithful – they were to be preserved through the flood to begin again and ultimately fulfil God’s promise and bring forth the Redeemer.
If we apply this story to the island, it seems that The Others are the line of Seth, which would explain why they often mention that they are “The Good Ones”.
On this basis, the Numbers do equate to a predicted date for the end of the world (or the perishing of the line of Cain) and The Others’ fixation with children and reproduction is because they are meant to re-start the human race.
Two more interesting points to corroborate this theory:
(i) The Pillars of the Sons of Seth – these were meant to be two Pillars (one brick one stone) inscribed with many scientific discoveries and inventions, notably astronomy (link to Ben’s astronomy map in his apartment). It was built to protect the discoveries after the destruction of the world.
In “The Brig” Ben ties Anthony Cooper to a stone pillar.
(ii) The Book of Life – this is an allegorical book in which god records the names and lives of the righteous people. Cain and his line are not in the Book of Life because they are not redeemable.
This could link in to Jacob’s list. This would also explain Mikhail’s comment that Kate is not on the list because she is flawed, Locke because he is angry and Sayid because he is weak.
Following this theory, then we could have:
Charles Widmore could be Esau, who is Jacob’s twin but who comes from the line of Cain. Another interesting point is that Esau is also known as Edom – because whilst Jacob in the father of the Kingdom of Israel, Esau was the father of the Kingdom of Edom - Psalm 108 contains a reference to Edom. Also, I believe the sentence “God loves you as he loved Jacob” doesn’t actually appear in the Bible, but Malachi 1:2-3 says “I have loved Jacob but Esau I have hated”
The Dharma Initiative, perhaps funded by Widmore, somehow found the island and was looking to see how this island would save those on it from the end of the world, to then work out how it could save current humanity (and thus prevent the end of the Cain line).
The Monster could be the keeper of the Garden of Eden. Bible states that after the expulsion, God placed an angel with an omnidirectional flaming sword to guard against any future entrance to the garden.
Also, and this stars to stretch it a bit, the island could be home to “Jacob’s Ladder” which formed a bridge to heaven – this could explain the presence of dead people on the island. The 4-toed statue could have represented a guardian to the entrance to this ladder. According to ancient tradition (and this I am quoting from wikipedia), “protective deities sometimes found as pairs of colossal statues were placed either side of objects to be protected, such as doorways”.
Now, if the island is some sort of Garden of Eden or a portal to heaven/different dimension and meant to shelter the survivors of the earth’s destruction, then it would make sense that it exists outside of normal space and time rules.
It is also possible that you enter there only as a soul or a consciousness – this would explain why people don’t get sick and the healing properties of the island. The flaws that get highlighted in the island are only emotional, because you are not “in your body”. This is why Desmond (and Eloise) don’t physically leave their space in time, their consciousness or soul does, and then they return to their physical body. And since you are not moving your physical self, you can be projected back and forth in a lifetime (going on the Einstein theory that time is like a film reel and you can choose to go in whichever different frame you fancy).
Also Hurley is special, or sees things he is not supposed to see, because he has already been able to detach his mind from the physical realm.
This whole theory doesn’t quite explain what specific role Jack, Locke and the rest of them are going to play. I kind of want to lean on Jack being a descendant of Seth, Noah and Jacob (this would also tie in with the fact that the biblical Aaron was the great great grandson of Jacob) and so a survivor of the world destruction and the re-start of human race. My guess is that they may just join The Others in the fight against the agents of Cain, and then finally, with the destruction of Cain’s line, Jack becomes the supposed Redeemer and the leader of the good line of Seth.

I really like biblical references and religious themes, but I think this borders on the whole purgatory idea which was debunked…
great read though!
Uhm, I think the garden of Eden was in the middle east, and is supposed to be guarded by Cherubim and Seraphim. Haven’t seen any of those yet. I do like the idea, I just don’t think that’s where the writers are ultimately going.
well technically, purgatory and the garden of eden are different.
i thought this was really intresting
Yes the Garden of Eden was betweek the Tigris & Euphrates Rivers, in the middle east, but that was before the great flood of Noah’s time. It is believed that the earth was only 1 continent before the flood and was then broken into what we have today. Perhaps the Garden of Eden moved during the flood but was protected at the same time. Also, Seth is the name of 815’s pilot.
who believes the flood seperated the continents? Google says pangea split 200 million years ago. Noah’s flood was at most 4-5 thousand years ago. that’s just bad science Tiff
The smoke monster could be the angel.
i thought this was great. +1
Creationists believe that the great flood split the continents, tinywanker.
actually, I’m a creatrionist, and I don’t believe that at all. It;s ok if you do, but I don’t think that’s the accepted belief of all creationists
Thanks for all the comments. Actually, thinking about it, I guess the question of whether it is the Garden of Eden or not is not too important. I could happily accept that the island is just a mystical place of sorts… uncharted territory…
