Simple. Is it plausible that the whispers are merely meant to be part of the soundscape? I know we have all listened to myriad samples of reversed and slowed whispers, maybe even read a transcript or two. It seems reasonable that they weren’t intended to be consumed this way. The show has an audience of millions, not hundreds. Are we supposed to believe that parts of the plane are lurking around whenever we hear the samples of metal on metal like we do in the title sequence?

Well we can hear the transition sounds/music, as the audience. But the people on the island can’t. When whispers are heard however, whatever character is on screen acts as if they can here it, they even talk about it to eachother (Sayid and Sawyer, Roseau etc…) Every time a flashback starts the character doesn’t say “hey whats that wooshing sound. Haha. You’re definitely thinking outside the box.. which is cool.. but i disagree. -1

http://thefuselage.com/ has the largest collection of whisper sound captures and transcripts of any site I have found. After being processed heavily, ie reversal, pitch and speed changes, etc, some are easy to hear and understand, while others are still difficult to agree upon, making the transcripts less than reliable in some cases.

However, former writer and DJDan alias Javier “Javi” Grillo-Marxauch commented on the forums several times about the whispers…

And writer’s assistant Matt Raggs made some comments as well:

Interesting reading, but I’ll paraphrase for the labor-impaired…

    1) The whispers are important and should be considered a part of the mythology of the show

    2) What the whispers are saying is not necessarly important but could give a greater understanding of the mythology

    3) The writers make an effort to ensure we only hear what they want us to hear

    4) The writers are often devious about how we should interpret the what the whispers are saying… in other words, even if we could understand all of the whispers we may be misunderstanding their meaning in a particular scene or in the overall mythology.

What we know for sure is that there are two types of whispers…

    1) Whispers that proceed apparitions, which may or may not be related to the Smoke Monster / Cerberus.

    2) Whispers that proceed the Smoke Monster / Cerberus, which may or may not be related to the Smoke Monster / Cerberus. :)
