Mikhail seems to be important to Ben and the island.

Well, Ben has to have some way of assuring the Darhma people that they are continuing in their world saving duties as scheduled. He needed someone who would be loyal to him. I think that person is Mikhail. Have you ever seen Mikhail without his Dharma suit on? Plus his backstory he told to Sayid and Kate seemed pretty believable to me, and i dont think he grew up on the island.
I assume that Mikhail is now dead, but i hope he isn’t. He and Ben seem to have a strange relationship. I’d like to see his flashback at the time of the “war”. Mikhail is sorta aloud to do his own thing in the communication hatch, and i think he was telling the truth about the war and how he stayed out of it in order to survive. The way the scene between him and Sayid was shot, we were led to believe that he was lying about being the last member of the darmha initiative left alive on the island, but i think this is the truth!!! Some other weird things about Mikhail… he’d rather die then betray Ben. However, he can’t die! Or at least thats how it seems. I mean if I got blasted with a sonar pulse of that magnitude i’d probably die.
So why didn’t he die? Does he still have work to do and the island won’t let him? Perhaps the work he had to do was flood the looking glass, which he did, so maybe he really is dead now? Not sure, but what i do know is that Mikhail seems to be important to Ben and the island.
Tell me what you think about Mikhail’s identity

I think Mikhail is definitely dead.
I think he was originally Dharma and was, like Ben, a ‘defector’ that signed up with ‘the hostiles’.
I think he’s considered crazy yet reliable; thus he was allowed to remain in The Flame alone.
It said on lostpedia that Mikhail perished when he detonated the grenade. I think he was kept alive by the island, so that he could flood the looking glass, and in turn would kill Charlie. As for his identity, we can only guess. I think an episode based on Mikhail would be interesting to see if his war story was in fact true, and if not, where did he come from?
what_now, I agree with Angelo and I think that Mikail was probably one of the most loyal to Ben. I would love to see more of his back story too!
+1 for your thoughts. Nice work.
Not nearly enough information is known and not enough dates are concrete for us to know the relationship between Ben and Mikhail. However, if we are to believe at least some of what Mikhail said about himself, it wasn’t until early 1990’s after his military unit was disbanded that he was recruited to the island by “a magnificent man.” We can only assume, based on the previously shown recruitement of Juliet, that this man was Ben acting through Richard and Ethan.
It would also make his recruitment around the same time as Kelvin’s. Aside from Kelvin’s flaws of the truth to Desmond, I think we can generally take Kelvin at his word. At minimum we can say that Kelvin believed what Kelving said to be true and assume he was recruited in the early to mid-90’s shortly after the first Gulf War.
If so, it’s arguable, based on Ben’s age, whether the Dharma purge occured in the early 90’s or earlier. We do know that Ben was of no significance to the Dharma Initiative because he was a workman like his father. He certainly wouldn’t have done any recruiting for them until after the purge. Still, most theorists assume that the outside world thinks Dharma is/was still active to some degree after the purge, not knowing it had been taken over by Ben.
It’s quite possible Mikhail was the last “recruitment” of the real Dharma Initiative prior to the purge or Ben’s Dharma Initiative after the purge and before Ben abandoned the cover for a more reputable one involving Mittelos Bioscience. Neither scenario makes his backstory any more or less believable. In fact, his entire backstory could be filled with false facts, misplaced dates and speculations. Afterall, he is telling this to people he considers a threat. He has no reason to tell the truth.
It’s entirely possible that he came to the island much earlier than he stated and truly was recruited by the pre-purge Dharma Initiative. It’s likely that he was always stationed at the flame and that most of the stations inhabitants survived the purge due to their distance from the barracks. Each may have been given a choice… to serve Ben’s needs or perish like the rest of Dharma. Mikhail definitely has an aversion to approaching people, which may be an aftereffect of being attacked by the hostiles so often.
So, the answer is maybe. There simply isn’t enough information available yet on the timeline of the purge to know what parts of Mikhail’s story are accurate.
Thanks Annie!!!! for the +1 and thanks BillyGOat for your insight. I agree that it’s impossible to know if anything Mikhail said was truthful, I guess we’ll have to wait for a flashback to find out (fingers crossed).
What, is the one-eyed man any realtion to the black-eyed peas?
HaHA .. isn’t black eyed peas what Frank fed to Sayid and Des on the freighter?!…. hey maybe the one eyed man is Bens second mole on the boat… ya see tinywanker, you’re harmless joke is enough to spur an offshoot theory! lol look what you’ve done!
Oh wait…. strike that. It was lima beans.
I hope we get his backstory! I have a feeling it would be really amazing, full of action.
