There is a comment on the blast door map attributed to the swan station – No connection to island wide EEP network.

I was intrigued by the meaning of EEP. The first thing that popped into my head was that it was a fusion of ESP (extra-sensory perception) and EEG (electro-encephalogram). A little further digging showed that the Dharma Initiative were very interested in ‘parapsychology’ – which is obviously strongly linked to ESP.

I hope this is going to make sense – it isn’t easy to put into words. This theory is based around the idea that EEP is some form of enhanced ESP. Let us imagine that the Dharma Initiative had generated some means to access the collective consciousness. Perhaps one of the Dharma stations allowed particular Dharma scientists to ‘access minds’. I am not predicting that this particular experiment was perfected, but that it was attempted and was at least partially successful. Dharma intended to set up a Utopian society, and being able to differentiate the good from the bad would be vital to such a society.

Since we have proof of an ‘island wide EEP network’, what if certain individuals (maybe with certain psychic powers) could access this network independently of the Dharma station. What if Ben was one of these people? What if Ben decided that Dharma had failed in generating the Utopian society, but that due to his ability to access this EEP network, Ben could generate the Utopian society? Why not wipe the slate clean and start again i.e. the Purge!

From this point on, Ben took it upon himself to use his ability to access this EEP network to start his own Utopian society – i.e. he would decide if people were ‘good’ enough to belong. He certainly seems very able to predict how certain individuals will react to certain situations.

Note – I would not dismiss the fact that the EEP network may explain Jacob. Maybe he is the one that predicts ‘good’ vs ‘bad’? Maybe he decided that Ben was ‘bad’? All stuff to think about.

It is also interesting that the blast door map claims that the Swan station had no connection to the EEP network i.e. Ben would not be able to access the consciousness of individuals within the Swan station. Being the control freak he is, he allows himself to be captured (assuming the persona of Henry Gale), to ensure he can enter the Swan to see what is going on – although this does possibly suggest that Rousseau is complicitous in these actions.

Side effects of this EEP network/collective consciousness. An individual’s subconsciousness could become more ‘real’ – i.e. the supposed hallucinations the losties experience are simply some kind of heightened consciousness. Just look at Hurley’s experience with Dave. It is absolutely in character that Hurley’s subconscious would doubt his relationship with Libby. The fact that the EEP network is island wide might also explain why individuals can share ‘hallucinations’ e.g. The black horse witnessed by Sawyer/Kate.

Is Rose so convinced that Bernard is alive in Series 1 due to this network and the stronger psychological ties between man and wife? Does it explain anything else? The Whispers?? Are the whispers an indication that the Dharma station that controls the network is being used? What is interesting is that the whisper transcripts seem to be a combination of certain individuals having a conversation that seems to relate to what is going on at that precise moment and the subconscious of the individual hearing the whispers e.g. Sawyer hears whispers that relate to his current task i.e. killing the boar and also include comments from Frank Duckett – the man he killed.

Does this explain the appearance of Harper in ‘The Other Woman’. Can you ‘project’ your image via the EEP network (possibly via the Dharma station).

It appears from the blast door map that Cerberus malfunctioned. I think most people believe that Cerberus is Smokey. Is the Cerberus malfunction due to the fact that it somehow accessed the EEP network?? As a result Cerberus is now greatly influenced by this collective consciousness. Was the wild thrashing at the beginning of Series 1 simply due to a large increase in this collective consciousness, causing an overload in the Cerberus system? If it is influenced by consciousness, this might explain why it attacked Eko. Eko was someone who wanted to believe that he was not a bad man – but deep down inside did not believe that he could atone for his past sins. Cerberus could sense that Eko regarded himself as ‘bad’ and therefore needed to be eliminated.

The Sonar Fence – Is the area surrounded by the sonar fence protected from this EEP network? Cerberus cannot pass through the Sonar Fence because it is somehow connected to the EEP network.

Finally, is Walt similar to Ben. He has the ability to access this EEP network – he ‘projects’ to Shannon via the EEP network, but cannot control the effects . In fact his ‘psychic’ powers are so great that the Others are frightened by what Walt might do if he continually accesses this EEP network. Could he actually control individuals??

Anyway, all good stuff to think about!!

I don’t wish to diminish any part of your theory, i found it interesting to read, but I went to Lostpedia, typed in “EEP” and got to a page: http://lostpedia.com/wiki/EEP where it states: (I cut & pasted this) “The backs of the Official Jigsaw Puzzles revealed that the “E.E.P” notations on the blast door map stands for Emergency Escape Protocol. This is mentioned in relation to the subterranean conduits on the blast door map. ”

    sorry!

this does NOT mean you don’t raise interesting stuff, and it could well be a collective consciousness thing going on, just not realated to EEP

I did like your thoughts on cerberus suddenly gaining a full whammy of collective consciousness when 815 crashed, that was original.

Have you seen forbidden planet? there was a collective consciousness type thing going on there with that frightening beastie which ALSO did not like sonic fences! the ‘ID’ monster.

Can you link your stuff to that? I would be interested to read your thoughts on it….put ‘ID monster’ in your title so i know where to find it !

    +1 for effort

Seedy, I just did the same thing as Solar, because I recalled looking up the meaning of EEP on the blast door map, way back! And, he is correct.

However, that being said, it certainly doesn’t diminish the main premise of your theory, with that noted exception. I believe when it comes to the “paranormal aspects” of “the island” and a “collective consciousness”, this would be a compelling argument for some of the answers to certain unanswered questions, in part.

I wrote a theory almost a year ago regarding the “smoke monster”, being a “Tulpa” or “Thoughtform”, which I personally still subscribe to, because I haven’t seen anything else which fully convinces me otherwise.

Excellent thoughts, well written, and thanks for delving into one of the non-traditional aspects of the show, which I feel needs more attention. We have some brilliant science theorists on site, who cover those aspects with total precision and accuracy, so nice to see someone attempt to cover these ideas, in addition.

    Nice work! +1

Seedy, Your theory merits much more positive attention than it has received, thus far, IMHO.

I agree… excellent thoughts. It also explains the way Ben is so into manipulating people especially people who have proven to be capable of tapping into the collective consciousness. I’m thinking of Locke. By keeping Locke trapped in his ego, Locke can’t access any higher levels of consciousness and is therefore not a threat. Perhaps Ben is exactly where he wants to be because he knows he needs to control Locke. +1

Thanks for you comments. It’s funny that it is EEP that set me on this train of thought and yet it has nothing to do with the theory. However, even ignoring an EEP connection, I do think that Dharma were attempting some form of island wide psychic connection - the collective consciousness talked about. And I certainly believe that Ben wanted to create his own Utopia. Another interesting thought is that Jacob is the important factor in determining who belongs in Utopia. Ben is the one who can communicate with him - but Jacob doesn’t think Ben belongs in Utopia!! Hence the reason Ben needs to keep Jacob in check!!

seedy, I agree it’s odd how sometimes one thing that turns out to be nothing will lead to a wonderful train of thought in a whole new direction!

+1 for a very unique and interesting theory. I, too, think that if Cerberus is now on it’s own, the crash would have overloaded it’s collective consciousness. May I also agree with Dab that it is well written and well thought out— much appreciated!

    Very nicely done. :)

seedy, very enjoyable read and great work! hate to repeat what others have said, but love the thought of Smokey being overloaded when the Losties crashed! +1

good read seedy, dab, how does that tulpa thing work?
