I have been really racking my brains trying to put simple understandable answer’s to some of the questions I have regarding Lost. So here’s my crack at Libby (with another Bad Twin reference)

OK my opinion is that Libby was in the same hospital as Hurley as a patient which is where she became interested in phycology. She got better and started studying and got her quals and started her own small practice.

Penny Widmore suffering badly from depression used her as a shrink to discuss her problems with the Des breakup (In Bad Twin they used a side street detective rather than a mainstream to avoid publicity) at which point Penny manages to persuade her inexperienced shrink to pretend to give Des a boat (Penny’s way of helping him prove himself) fitted with a tracking beacon so if the worst happened she at least could find him.

I think Penny knows roughly where she is looking but just can’t find the island.

Hope this makes sense ??????

sleepz: Could be. At least it’s a new twist on the Penny story!

But it doesn’t explain why Libby is on the island and why the writers hinted she is connected to DI.

    Any ideas?

I’ll keep thinking on that one Annie, are we completely convinced that she was on the plane ??? I mean could she not have been hired by Ben like Juliette was to assertain the mental stability of the others.

sleepz: No, I have no proof she was on the plane, other than the fact that she ended up with the Tailies. That’s a good question!

Didn’t Hurley have a manifest? Maybe we can check that out.

sleepz: According to Lostpedia, in the episode “?” during a flashback, at the airport Libby steps in during an argument between Eko and the psychic and asks if everything is ok. When they tell her it is, she boards the flight.

There wasn’t much on the manifest, it stated that only Hurley, Sawyer and Locke had seen it.

I think Libby is a shrink and she was at Hurley’s hospital not as a patient but doing some studying of what it is like to be a patient. She seeks out Hurley on the island because she remembers him from the hospital and probably wants to keep an eye on him to protect everyone else. Hurley could end up being a very bad dude. He did run over those Others in a frigging van!

I haven’t been able to come up with a reasonable theory about Libby yet myself. It’s driving me crazy as well!! First she seems to be connected to Dharma or Whidmore Industries in some way. If it’s Dharma then why was she on the a flight that just happens to crash on the island? And why would she go to such efforts to get Desmond to the island?

It seems more likely that she’s working for Daddy Whidmore and gives Desmond the boat on his behalf as a means of getting rid of him. But why then was she in the mental hospital with Hurley?

What we know about her is: 1. She was in the hospital with Hurley. (Could have been as a patient or as a Doctor / plant studying the other patients. We don’t have enough info to know why she was there yet.)

    1. She was in America where she met Desmond at a coffee shop in a seemingly innocent encounter. Desmond mentions his desire to enter the boat race around the world and Libby offers him the boat he recently dead husband bought and named after her (The Elizabeth).

    2. She goes to Australia for an unknown reason and boards flight 815.

    3. She is a member of the tail section survivors and claims to be a clinical psychologist.

    4. Soon after she meets Hurley she develops a relationship with him that seemingly is getting serious before she is “accidentally” murdered by Michael.

The real connection here is with Hurley in the mental institute (and later on the island) and with Desmond. Why would she be in the mental ward with one survivor and directly responsible for getting a second member of the island inhabitants to the island? What is the connection between them and why is Libby the bridge? Too many questions and too few answers!!

I like this idea with Libby. Am wondering before she was in the mental hospital if she was with DI is it possible that should you leave (or be no longer needed by the) DI that you go into the brain washing room and have your memory erased? The crazy guy with the numbers could have been an ex DI employee aswell.

Some good thoughts here, sleepz! I had wondered, if perhaps Libby was a Psychiatrist initially, and then suffering the loss of her husband, had a full mental collapse and ended up requiring treatment herself. And that is how she came to meet Hurley! +1
