Thats Ok Ben …..we can take the boat.

— wtfsignmeup

Once again apologies if this has been discussed.I think it must have.I did a search but couldnt find any answers so I hope you people can help me out.

Ben promised Jack that if he did the surgery he could leave the island, that Ben would take him home himself.

In Stranger in a Strange Land,we see Jack and the Others about to board a rather large boat a little ways off to sea. This was a big boat at least the size of a trawler, and we see Jack and Juliette standing on the bow in the end of the episode…

My question is….why didnt Jack demand to be taken home in the boat after the sub was destroyed?

Ben had made a promise to Jack and he would have been in the right to demand the promise be kept..

Did something happen to that boat and i missed it?If not, where is it?

It might be that you can only arrive and leave the island safely by sub….so how is a freighter going to get there safely, even if it does have a fix on the location?

WTF: I don’t remember another boat! I can’t help you there.

But the key event that now has exposed the island is Desmond turning the key. It USED to be that the only way to leave the island was by sub, but ever since the sky turned purple, it is now possible for an above surface vessel to reach the island. the freighter is 80 miles away - I don’t think they have visual, but maybe with Jack’s call and a lat/long they can find it.

We think! Do we really know that Michael and Waaaaaallllllttt!!! left ?

My guess is Michael’s on the freighter….

    lol, Waaaaaaaaaaaalllllltttttt

Wtf, oh yea, I remember the boat~or was it a ship? It seemed very large, and I remember thinking the same as you~Why the heck not take THAT boat and leave the island….Unless there are compass issues like Des experienced when he tried to sail off. When they showed Jack and Juliette on their way back to the other island, this is the only time I’ve seen the boat and as far as I know it hasn’t been destroyed yet by Locke:)

Nickee: i guess its another point of frustration for me because Ben should have at least mentioned why it couldnt be used(even if it was a lie)…and a boat that size is a bit hard for the writers to expect us to just forget about (though Stip did,so there you go).

Oh i absolutely agree…another loose end!

The illustrious mrssawyer made a post about boats. http://lost-theories.com/theories/2007/jun/29/not-theory-observation-about-b/

The Lostpediatrian has some boats… http://www.lostpedia.com/wiki/TheOthers%27boats

Not sure what ended up with that one wtf. Some one is trawling around the island.

    Good catch! (no pun intended)

    Dang… forgot about the boat.

    Dang.

Well, my theory is that when Ben told Mike and Walt they’d find rescue if they took a certain course, he meant the freighter, and Walt’s communicating with John from there (like he communicated with Shannon from wherever he was being held by the Others). So… I think it might be reasonable to conclude that the boat can’t leave for some reason, and the only reason Mike and Walt could “leave” is because they would intercept another boat. (Ok, this does also suggest that if Desmond, say, had run into any other boats on his way away from the island, he might not have had to come back… but… who knows?)

    Hey Annie,

It’s the boat that Jack and the Others used to get back to the main island from the island they took Jack, Kate, and Sawyer too for capture.

Too wtf: For some reason I remember Ben mentioning that the only way off that Island was by submarine. That may have only been to Locke after he blew it up, but I’m not 100% sure. I’ll have to rewatch and confirm.

theman….that would be interesting if he said that….(about the only way off the island)…that means no way michael and walt actually left..

  11. eko_theman Sep 13, 2007 9:13 a.m. Comment: 11

exactly, but at that time, his word was the only word Michael and Walt could trust. Ben seems to be a man of his word, but what his words mean could be different in his head than how others interpret them. All he said was “You will find rescue”. But what if to Ben, “rescue” means that they will find the freighter and ultimately end up back on the island…a place where Ben cherishes and considers a paradise compared to anywhere else….sounds like a play on words that Ben would definitely use to me!….sneaky bugger

He is a sneaky bugger theman….what if Bens promise to Jack “I will take you home myself “actually meant he would take him from alcatraz back to their island home?

  13. eko_theman Sep 13, 2007 9:51 a.m. Comment: 13

hahahaha, that’s another thing I could definitely see happening!…although, you would have to question why they got Jack and Juliet packed up and ready and took them to the sub. Unless Ben was absolutely sure well in advance that Locke was going to blow up the sub, then he could make that promise and still feel peace of mind in that he brought him back to his home on the island…..my head hurts!

  14. ProfOzone Sep 13, 2007 9:59 a.m. Comment: 14

Well, as I said… I think the freighter is precisely what Ben meant by “finding rescue”. But presumably… theoretically… if they could find the freighter and if the freighter could take them home, then “happening upon another vessel while attempting to leave the island” would qualify as another way to leave it other than by submarine. Unless we assume that the freighter, while not able to find the island, also cannot successfully leave its present location. But I don’t know why we’d assume that.

    A side note…

The freighter mentioned by Naomi is 80 miles West.

At sea level on a clear day the visible (naked eye) horizon is about 3 miles or 4.7 kilometers. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Horizon

The trawler was probably pretty close. Without a reference point or comparative object to judge by size and distance can be deceiving.
