After the purge the Hostile’s installed Mikhail (ex-Dharma) at the Flame Station and fed them the yarn that the island was over run by some kind of deadly virus (‘the sickness’) and informed the DI that all station’s had been Quarantined and most of the DI staff had succumed to the virus.
The DI continued to make food drop’s at Mikhail’s request, however the DI were suspicious of Mikhail’s story and they continued to secretly rotate the staff at the Swan Station (the most important station of all, and the only one not in the hand’s of the hostile’s), which is how Radzinski and Kelvin got to the island, this continued until Mittelwerk imprisoned Alvar Hanzo.
At around the same time as Kelvin was delivered to the island the Hanzo Foundation decided to investigate ‘the Sickness’, harbouring a deep suspicion that there was no such thing and that it was all a smoke-screen perpertrated by the hostile’s, the DI decided to arm their investigation team (a science team armed with rifle’s? as Sayid remarked upon hearing Rousseau’s story in ‘Solitary’).
The team led by Robert (Rousseau’s lover)ran aground on the island and headed in the direction of the radio tower searching for the source of the signal they had picked up, into the area that Danielle later dubbed ‘the Dark Territory’. Here Danielle began to hear the whispers and began to become a little unstable. It was around this time that the team were attacked by a Polar Bear and Montand had his arm ripped from his body, despite medical assistance from his colleague’s he his arm became infected and he died.
The crew holed up at the Black Rock, and Robert mindful of the fact that Danielle was pregnant decided that the two of them would stay there and the rest of the team should head on to the tower.
However, the team had been spotted in the jungle day’s earlier by the Hostile’s and the crew heading on to the radio tower were amushed by the other’s (all dressed in rag’s of course!) and taken to the decoy village were they were then drugged and shipped off to the Staff Station.
At the Staff the Other’s kept Rousseau’s team under sedation and implanted them as they had did Claire. They then returned them to the decoy village and set up a situation were the group were allowed regain their weopon’s and believe that they had gotten away.
They returned to the Black Rock and reported of how they had been captured by this tribe living by the beach. Robert decided that they must all hasten to the radio tower and send out a distress signal. As they reached the tower the other’s activated their implant’s and Rousseau saw them all appear to be getting sick. Ben’s plan was to move in and kidnap Rousseau while most of her team were incapacitated.
However Rousseau, already driven mad by the shock of Montand’s Polar Bear attack and week’s of spooky whisper’s goe’s berserk and blow’s the brain’s out of all of them, including Robert.
Rousseau then disappear’s into the jungle but is eventually tracked down by The Other’s, just as Danielle has given birth to Alex and Alex is kidnapped.
That’s my stab at explaining what happened to Rousseau and her team.
Of course everything Rousseau has said about her time on the island thus far could be a lie! ( Alot of it does seem very unlikely) But until the writer’s say different (or I get a better idea) that’s what I think!

Not bad at all CPB. Very plausable. Of course we won’t know for months and months if ever which is the terribly annoying thing but you get marks for trying from me.
Thank’s very much mrs. hopefully we’ll finally get some answer’s on that one in season 4. The fact that they have delayed on it so long make’s me think that her back story is a central part of the plot. (Mind you I thought that about Kate in s1, and then I got ‘What Kate Did’ in s2, big anti-climax!)
Yeah. This is a good explanation of why Rousseau discusses a sickness, but that there doesn’t appear to be a real one on the island. Tying it into Claire’s implant: well done! +1
I like the implant tie in too, it’s a good theory & would make for a good episode….arm ripped off and brains being blown out! gets my vote! +1
Very creative….however, I’ve always (for some reason) thought that Rousseau’s story is just that, a story.I don’t think she’s lying on purpose though, I think she was brainwashed by Ben and Co. +1
Het Solarchap thank’s for the vote but I think you forgot to actually give me it tho! (or someone has at least!)
yes you’re right! sorry! I have done it 4 u now though!
to make up for it here are 2 anagrams for Danielle Rousseau….
‘Else a lie around us’
& my favourite…..’Lie Nude! Use a Solar!’
Cheers, mate!
CPB: I love it! I think this is a very plausible idea! Even, if it is not exactly as you theorize, it is the most believable explanation! +1
Well Done!
I like this a lot. Well done, CPB.
Many thanks to you all for the support guys, i do what I can!
Nice post CPB.
I just watched “Maternity Leave” (2x15). How wild is that? It must be the whole synchronisity thing.
So some thoughts regarding Danielle:
If we observe Claire’s reactions after the whole ordeal with her baby, then we may understand Danielle’s current mental state.
Claire resolves most of her memory issues fairly quickly with the help of Libby and a trip to the scene of the crime compared to Danielle and so heals on a mental level.
Now imagine if Claire hadn’t had the help she did. She might have ended up like Danielle who has had amnesia for 16 years and possibly has been routinely drugged by the Others.
Ethan had Claire so messed up that she was going to give up her baby willingly AND had to be drugged by Alex and knocked out by Danielle to escape.
Just some questions I have and that may be answered in a Danielle flashback:
Could it be Benny boy got caught in Danielle’s net while on the way to drug her up again?
Alex claims the baby will be cut out and Claire will die so how come her mom Danielle is alive?
Does Danielle have a C-Section scar?
Shamballa, what did you mean on the post the other night about ‘goin out on a limb for me’?
CPB,
In another thread I listed you as one who I thought was one of the better more recent posters here.
I don’t agree with all the assessments made by folks here but I like this one.
really like the di/ hanso/sickness/native/other bit… mostly that middlewerk is leading the current charge., id hate to think the “lost experience” was all for naught., maybe it was just to pass time between seasons., but hopefully there is something there.. i posted a long while ago that i believe the boat is the helgus antonius discussed in tle. I like the implant theory as well, however personally I think if any of the frenchys were implanted it was Danielle.
I was going to add that Danielle, like Claire who scratched her, may have been driven to the point of thinking that her own team was against her and her baby and so killed them to give up Alex to the others.
Kat, here’s a little trivia for you…
I like the way the writers pick name the characters to suit their personality and the story that is Lost.
Alex is derived from the Greek name Αλεξανδρος (Alexandros), which meant “defending men” from Greek αλεξω (alexo) “to defend, help” and ανηρ (aner) “man” (genitive ανδρος).
And what exactly are they saying? My only beef is with Leko as he seems unable to read a theory without acting superior, and I do stress the word acting.
And Shamballa, good point about Claire I believe Ben wanted to rip the baby out of her as Ben feared the Losties search parties may discover the staff, so he intended to rip the baby out and place claires body in the jungle were it would be found.
CPB, I wasn’t referring to how people here may think about you or your posts. I was referring to my opinion on the theories being posted of late.
Lockeko states his opinions just like everyone else here does. I for one respect the fact that he doesn’t candy coat them.
I’m sure you two can work things out yourselves though.
agreed CPB, I also got the feeling from Tom and Ethan’s conversation that they might be pressed for time.
CPB: +1 Well thought out theory. I’m not sure I agree with everything, much of it is speculation, but at least it’s plausible!
Good work. :)
CPB,
Very good work! Just to add one thought; I think Rousseau’s team may have actually been hired by DI to work at the Flame, but by the time they arrived, Mikhail had already been “installed” as you suggested, by the Hostiles. +1
Shamballa,
Excellent point about Claire. Without help, she could have turned out just like Rousseau!
This ain’t bad, I cant say it’s great but it certainly ain’t bad
CrazyPolarBear: I don’t agree fully with you, but you make TWO great points!
I was always wondering what exactly happened to Rousseau’s team, since they all seemed to get sick, and the sickness was a hoax. So how could they be sick? I didn’t think of the fact that they could ave implanted something to the team similar to Claire’s implant. Great find!
I also like the idea of Montand’s arm been ripped off by the Polar Bear.
Now a few observations:
If Dharma continued to secretly rotate the staff at the Swan Station, that means they know how to get to the Island. So why didn’t they send more “troops” (equipped with these anti-disease suits) to the Island?
Rousseau seems like a toughie. I don’t think she got unstable because of the whispers or because she has seen that incident with the Polar bear and so on… The Losties have also heard the whispers, and seen the Polar Bear and even been in MUCH WORSE situations (think of what Sawyer, Kate & Jack have seen and experienced) and they seem to still be quite stable. Also, Rousseau didn’t kill any of the Losties. If she was really going berserk and kill her husband, she would just kill anyone for no reason.
I think that it is possible that she killed all her team because of the disease, that it made her people “crazy” and/or that she was afraid it was contaguous (spelling?). Concerning Robert Lostpedia says:
“Robert was a member of Danielle Rousseau’s science expedition that became shipwrecked on the Island. Robert was Danielle’s “love” who gave her the music box for their anniversary. According to Danielle, he came down with the Sickness. She removed the firing pin from his gun in secret, and then confronted him with a gun, at which point she shot him dead. It is implied that she killed the other members of the expedition around the same time.
Danielle only mentions Robert in the episode “Solitary”. While Sayid is holding Danielle at gunpoint and he realizes his gun does not work, she says, “The firing pin has been removed. Robert didn’t notice it was missing either, when I shot him.” The character has not as yet appeared in any episode. ”
So I believe Robert was sick too and the sickness made her people (and Robert) crazy. Probably Robert tried to kill her, and she killed him and the rest of the team.
Anyway…I Loved your post! +1 from me!
Good theories everyone! I don’t know much about Danielle or the team she came with, but I do feel like there is something really weird about Danielle, besides the obvious, I do feel as if she is lying about alot of things, defiantly about how she arrived on the Island, I don’t think they just heard the #’s, I think they were looking for them, they wanted to find the Island & I believe Danielle knows alot about the Island, besides what she has learned just by being there, and she is trying to throw off the survivors, as you have all mentioned above, I think she will turn out to be a bad guy somehow, working with hostiles maybe, or someone in the real world, either way I feel like she is a liar, and is alot smarter than shes letting on. I know all this was said above, just wanted to show my support about some of the things said in here, I just dont think she was brainwashed or went crazy, shes just flat out lying!!!!
xiv - Thanks for the vote, in response to your observation’s - I’m not sure why Dharma wouldn’t send more troops (do we know how big Rousseau’s team was?) and for all we know they may have had anti-disease suits in the begining.
Although the Losties have heard whisper’s seen Polar Bear’s etc everyone react’s differently, I think Danielle may have just been a little unstable to begin with and her experience’s just pushed her over the edge.
alicelookingglass- That’s a definate possibility I didn’t think of that one.
Ok this one may be out there but bear with me…
We know that, according to Danielle’s story, she has been there at least 16 years (the distress signal), and we are told that she killed her team because they were sick. BUT, she doesn’t say WHEN she killed them, there are no other bodies in her little room where she captures Sayid.
What if, and it’s a big IF, she was involved somehow in the Purge with Ben and during that, Robert and co were killed? This would mean that her back story is partly incorrect, but (if the dates tie in) it could be another possibility?
wow, i read that you’re one of the most plausible writers on here, and that’s awesome!!! I’ve always wondered about that sickness bit……i do kind of think the first part is a bit weak, but the danielle story is amazing.
This is an awesome theory CPB +1.Great ideas. Cant wait for Rousseaus flashback……I think the writers are holding onto that one until season 5 :(
+1 Because I liked the part with the implant. It would explain why Rousseau thougt het crew was sick. And why she herself wasn’t. Also why that the survors of flight 815 are not sick yet, even though they don’t have the vaccin.
This is the best theory I have read so far. +1 from me
Definitely seems plausible. I think the tie-in with the implant makes perfect sense! +1
I am confused. How has Rousseau avoided the smoke monster for such a long time? is that what the whole dark territory thing was all about?
Yeah, I like it. Simple, concise and fits the facts perfectly. I think we’ll find out more about Rousseau now that’s she’s been re-united with Alex.
Very good! Seems very plausible! +1
Pretty easy to understand, very original. easily good enough for my +1 any ideas on why we haven’t seen even a tidbit of flashback footage of this Lostie? I know she’s not the most essential character but still…probably those writers holding out on us again!
In the episode Catch 22 when Naomi arrives on the island, according to lostpedia.com her helicopter crashed into the ocean. I don’t see how the freighter is big enough to handle two helicopters, It looked like it could barely carry Frank’s helicopter. What I’m proposing is that Naomi’s helicopter came from Rousseau’s freighter, the first one sent by Charles Widmore. When Naomi’s helicopter left and didn’t report back, Rousseau’s freighter went to look for her, however the freighter arrived 16 years too early. Per Faraday “As Sayid and Desmond load Naomi into the chopper, Dan tells Frank that no matter what happens, they must fly on the exact same bearing in which they entered.” Also in the episdoe the constant “Daniel admits that the perception of time on the Island might be different than the time experienced off the Island.” All quotes courtesy of lostpedia.com. Side note, Why isn’t there any mention of Naomi when Sayid and Desmond first arrive on the freighter? Or did I miss something….? Just my thoughts for now, and this is my first comment on the site!
Plausible nice post. I’d wager we’ll get a Danielle Rousseau flashback with the next episode because now the last episode ending featured her and she probably isn’t dead, so they pick up on that with the next one.
seems to good to be true
Great theory!
Danielle is a mystery, but I agree that her team may have been sent by Widmore to find the island, or the BlackRock.
“However Rousseau, already driven mad by the shock of Montand’s Polar Bear attack and week’s of spooky whisper’s goe’s berserk and blow’s the brain’s out of all of them, including Robert. ”
you used wayyy too many apostrophes in that synopsis. anyways i think it sounds pretty good.
I don’t think danielle would have been sent to the island by widmore though. i mean it’s possible i guess, but danielle doesn’t really match what we’ve seen of the people that are recruitted by widmore.
It makes absolutely no sence for a pregnant woman to stay in a boat filled with dynamite to stay safe.
Danielle was sent to the island for a purpose and that purpose was appearanly to have her baby stolen by ben.
too bad we won’t get to see danielle’s or alex’s flashbacks. they’re dead now.
