I know this completely goes against my other theory, but IF the alternate life / wormhole theory were to be true, maybe Jack was learning to fly to try to find the island again???
EDIT: Apologies for the confusion, from what I can remember, I’m 99% positive that Jack mentions something about that he had flying lessons but that it “wasn’t for him”.
There is a small mention of it on Lostpedia, under Jacks’ page:
http://www.lostpedia.com/wiki/Jack_Shepherd
Probably crap, but I thought I’d mention it!

Was he learning to fly? Did I miss an ep? Genuine q from me…
Hmm doubtful, I’m almost positive it was in the Pilot Episode Mrs S……
…… just checked Lostpedia:
“At some point during his lifetime, Jack took a small number of flying lessons, but chose not to continue with them because “it wasn’t for me [Jack]”. (“Pilot, Part 1”)
Sorry for confusion in the post folks, not all my theory was posted!!!! sigh
That’s a good idea, it very well could be… +1
Well Gaz actually I have a suspicion that the Pilot ep could in fact be Jack’s 2nd time on the island so you never know, it might well turn out to be a clue!
Maybe he took flight lessons… from the same folks who taught him how to handle a gun…
Where did the good doctor learn THAT?
Well, Prof… he is American….
Prof agreed, maybe he had like special ops training maybe later we will see him pilot a big ass helicopter with cannons on each side and mow the others down ???
mrssawyer: I have a feeling you may be on to something with that, I’ve read somewhere before about how easily he found the sewing kit? Possibilities are endless in Lost though?!
Prof: Great observation on the gun shooting / fist flying Jack - though I have to agree with Hex, it IS easy to get your hands on a gun in the States. Certainly easier than over here anyway (UK)! It is possible that he owns a handgun at home, and I’m sure that many a doctor is a member of a gun club to relieve stress. Although we are never told are we?
sleepz: Lol, hmm interesting!! Maybe Guv’nor Arnie could drop in and lend a hand?!
gazzap: Don’t know how I missed this one yesterday, my apologies. But +1 for the great find! I don’t remember it but there it is in black and white in Lostpedia!!
And I agree completely with Mrs that way too many things point to this being Jack’s second go around.
I do believe what mssawyer said about it being Jacks 2nd time to the island! (Although I don’t know how & if it is, does he even remember?) I thought it would be Jack not Desmond who had the “time-travel” thing or whatever u wanna call it, I was kinda shocked when I seen it was Desmond, I was always thinking Jack had the so called “Gift” or “Sight”. Know I kinda feel as if Locke was put there as a sort of “Failsafe” in case Desmond does fail whatever it is he is supposed to do, because Locke does have some form of the “sight”. But, I do believe Jack has changed something in some way(like making the call), or maybe he wasn’t even supposed to be there at all!?! Whatever it is, I hope in the end he can “Fix” this too, cause he broke my heart in the Flash Forward! Yep, thats right, I love Jack, like so many others!! Wow, strayed of there for awhile, I don’t even think I addressed the real topic, whatever, it was about Jack, +1
Annie: I’ll forgive you, but only cos you gave me a +1! ;)
I have to admit that it only came to me when I was reading through something on Lostpedia (not Jack’s page) and it made a mention of flying lessons, so I dug a little deeper and found that particular extract. I’m intending to watch the Pilot again and listen out for it.
It would certainly make things interesting if it WAS Jack’s second time on the island…
lostintennessee: As much as I would like to promote the idea of time travel in the show, I’m almost certain the writers have debunked this particular angle. It DOES seem as though Jack has been there before, and I’m with 100% that Locke does seem to have some kind of sight.
So far we have only seen Desmond to have flashes of future occurances, but what the writers have yet to discredit, is whether anybody else has these visions. It could be a posibility that Locke (seeing as he was also in the hatch implosion), has developed this future visionary thing too?
As for Jack, I haven’t a clue, and the more I guess, the more confused I am!!! Arghhhhhhh!!!
Ah, Yes, Jack flying, That was it…lol! Yes Jack is a trained Pilot and has been flying back and forth from the island since he was a child! In a “parallel universe” Jack has built a runway, 2 shopping malls, 4 hotels, and a casino on the Island, it is now one of the most requested destinations for tourists, with oceanic airline flights every hour on the hour, in case of a crash, to or from the Island, you are guaranteed a gold pass to fly for life, only redeemable if you survive!
Oh….wait…uh….I…think…I messed up!?! What was the question? Where is this, who are you people…..;)
gozzap: They may have debunked time travel, but they admitted that Desmond did travel back in time!!
So, at this point I think we’re on our own.:)
Hmm Annie, ever the challenger, I like it!!! :)
Maybe they debunked physical time travel, but not spiritual time travel? Perhaps Des went back in time in some sort of ‘out-of-body’ experience, re-lived a specific time of his life (his most regretful) and tried to change it?
This doesn’t explain the visions, but might go some way towards explaining the crazy ring lady (Ms Hawking)?!
gazzap: Not sure I’m with you on that one!! I’m not saying I’m a big fan of time travel, but how else can we explain the writers confirming he actually did travel back in time??
See, now I’m believing them again. Confused much? :)
Hmm sorry Annie, not explained well on my part there.
Something obviously happened to all that were in the hatch when it imploded. Locke woke up and couldn’t talk, Charlie just about made it out, heaven only knows what happened to Eko but Des turned the key.
Now, bear with me…when people come close to death, they have a ‘near-death’ experience, apparently. What if Des didn’t physically go back in time, but he went back subconsciously? That way the writers don’t need to rule out time travel as it actually did occur, but not time travel as we would EXPECT???
Maybe I’m just clutching!
gazzap: No, I think you were explaining it fine. It was me doing the clutching, I think. :)
I agree with the poster, specifically where he says, “probably crap.”
