The smoke monster seems to decide to let some go, or to attack and possibly kill people on the Island. It seems unclear why this is until we look at the characters who have been attacked and killed.

First I will examine Locke.

The first time Locke was attacked by the Monster he wanted them to let him go. He describes “looking into the eye of the island” and saying it was beautiful. The second time he sees the monster, it attacks him. What is different? The second time Locke was getting Dynamite to open the hatch.

Boone was also attacked in Hallucination while he was working with Locke excavating the hatch.

Why was Mr. Eko killed? Perhaps because he insisted they continue pushing the button. ( I admit this one is a bit of a stretch) When Locke refuses to push the button perhaps he has proven himself worthy, to the monster, jacob, the others, i dont know.

I now want to examine when Juliet was attacked. About an hour ago I posted a theory that the monster knew she would betray the others/ben. And it probubly did. And then I realized that Juliet did end up being the one who told them about the looking glass hatch, enabbling them to allow contact with the outside world, and getting in contact, with who I believe is the Dharma Inititive. This is why the monster tried to kill her. It wasn’t Kate. I believe Kate has already faced the monster in the form of the horse.

The Monster was comming for Juliet. Not because she betraying the others. But because she was putting the island in danger by bringing back Dharma.

Also note that when walt shows up in front of shannon covered in water when you play his audio backwards says “don’t push the button. bad” If the smoke monster is infact the ghosts seen on the island, he was trying to prevent the button being pushed.

Walt also shows up right before the contact Dharma…..the smoke monster showed up in the form of Walt to tell Locke to kill Niomi, someone possibly involved with Dharma.

It does also seem that it was Dharma who built that fence.

Why did Ben’s Mother tell him to not cross the fence? Because Ben would one day help them get rid of Dharma. This is why Alpert was shocked to hear that Ben had seen his mother’s ghost. He knew the ghost was the smoke monster, and he was shocked, that it has spared a member of dharma. This is why Ben was seen as special alpert.

This is going to be a big stretch.- I have heard theories that Jack’s Dad works for Dharma, and many have commented about how sketch it is that Jack blacked out while the plane is crashing and wakes up so far away. If Jack’s dad is not dead and does indeed work for Dharma, it would make sense that the smoke monster would lead Jack to his father’s empty casket.

Thanks to a commenter I can also explain the death of the pilot. What were they doing on the plane that night? Looking for the transeaver. The one that lead them to find out about the radio tower, which allowed them to contact….dharma.

It all goes back to dharma. every encounter.
