When Penelope hears the name Desmond, she immediately asks “Desmond’s there? Is he all right?

In “Through the looking glass” Charlie successfully enters the code to unblock communications in the “underwater station.” When he does this an “incoming transmission” red light comes on, to which Charlie pushes.
There were TWO things I found strange in what followed:
- Penelope asks Charlie how he got “this signal/channel” (I forget which one exactly)
Didn’t it seem more like she had contacted the underwater station?
- Charlie identifies himself as a survivor from flight 8-1-5. Penelope tells Charlie her name, causing Charlie to call Desmond. When Penelope hears the name Desmond, she immediately asks “Desmond’s there? Is he all right?
How the hell did she figure out it was her Desmond?
She never asked for a last name - there’s millions of Desmond’s in the world.
Plus, all Charlie mentioned was 815, which Desmond was not on.
I know this will be debunked and obliterated, but I thought I’d share this.

Penny contacted the island she believes Demond is on. What she means when she asks Charlie how he found the channel, I think she meant how did he go about picking up her tranmission, as it was previously blocked. With regards to Desmond, she knew it had to be the island Desmond was on, after the team in the Arctic picked up the co-ordinates of the island after the Failsafe switch was activated at the end of Season 2. From here, Penny could have used the co-ordinates to contact the Looking Glass, but would not have been able to connect due to the jamming mechanism.
She new Desmond was on the island because of the big electrmagnetic explosion and the people in the Arctic called her and said they found “It”

Or it is possible that Penelope realized that Charlie recognized her, probably by knowing Desmond. Desmond and Penelope are not particularly common names.
Given that she may have realized that Charlie knew her, and that Charlie said he was on Oceanic 815 (a flight that had gone missing in the middle of the ocean, much like Desmond’s boat), she may have just been HOPING that it was the same Desmond.
I don’t believe Penny is on the freighter that Naomi mentioned. That’s why she doesn’t know who Naomi is. I think that boat belongs to Penny’s father who is the real man behind the dharma initiative curtain. This would explain why Naomi had a copy of the picture of Dez and Penny. However, I do believe Penny has her own search party out there somewhere and she will find the island as well as her father next season.

I wondered the same thing. I tend to agree with NowImLost. A clue is a stmt she made long ago to Desmond when she pulled up at night at the track where he was running. She said something like, “when you have a lot of money, you can find someone.” (loose memory here). And I think that was a clue — she’s looking for him. WHY? I don’t know.
I’ve thought that maybe she KNOWS (in the flashbacks) about the island and Desmond’s future, and that is why she stays with him. She’s like the reverse charlie — she’s with the poor guy to use him for her own purposes. I don’t know why, but I don’t believe it’s just true love between them. What do you all think?
