I wont pretend to be an expert or even that I have looked as closely at the show as you folks have. But the coffin in the funeral home is tiny. Looks like it couldnt fit anyone over 5‘5. Which would lead one to believe that it was a woman. But on freeze frame the newspaper article definately says “A man was found in a downtown Apt.” with a Los Angeles heading. to him!
So it was an extrememly short man. Ben? but then why is Jack seem so regretful and sad when he places his hand on the coffin? Then quickly reaching for his pills. We will likely see some sort of aliance between Jack and Ben in the following season.
My guess is that Jack becomes a selfish, almost crazed man. Forgetting about everyone one else and only striving for what he wants “getting off the island”. In an almost fanatic, dictatorship fashion. There will be a power struggle between the two of them and Jack looks regretful at the funeral because he finally realizes he should have listened.
This could also possibly be the reason kate appears angry at and resentfully concerned for Jack at the end.
Remember the quoute “why are you so anxious to get back?” forshadowing to jacks almost fanatical attitude about rescue.

Why does everyone think that the coffin was “tiny” - maybe I am blind but it really only looked tiny from the perspective when Jack was standing right in front of it. When he walked away, it looked completely normal (adult sized).
