I think that Naomi and her people are there in response to Locke’s entering 77 after winning the chess game

Trying to keep up with all of the theories since the finale, I don’t think this has been brought up.
Back when Kate, Sayid, Danielle, and Locke found patchy and the Flame station, Locke beat Mikhail’s computer chess game. Dr. Candle appeared and stated if there had been an invasion or infiltration by the hostile’s, enter 77…which Locke did. Then the place blew up.
I just had a thought that maybe this is why Naomi and her ship have come to the island, they’re affiliated with DHARMA of the mainland, and they’ve been sent to find out what the heck is going on. Why does she have a picture of Penny and Desmond? Perhaps because Charles Widmore, Penny’s father, knows Desmond could be there. The picture Naomi is traveling with of Des and Penny is a photocopy of the original. I think’s it’s safe to assume that Mr. Widmore had the copy made to give to Naomi so she would know him if she saw him. This might explain why Ben is in panic mode after learning that the ship was so close and someone had parachuted to the island, he is afraid that his “purge” is coming to an end by the DI. One question is, when Des, Charlie, hurley, and Jin first found Naomi and Mikhail came running out of the jungle after the flare was shot~why did he save her life? Possibly because he didn’t know who she was…or he could have done it, saved her life, in order to be able to talk with her and gain information. There is a gap in that episode between when Naomi tells Mikhail “I’m not alone” and when Mikhail gets to Ben to tell him the news of her arrival. He knows there is a ship, how far away it is, etc. and we don’t see her giving him that info. How did he know all of that? Is he really a Loyalist to Ben?Is it possible he’s been working under cover for the off island DHARMA initiative since he came to the island? I’m having a brain freeze and can’t remember how long he said he’s been there, I think 11 years. Regardless, I think that Naomi and her people are there in response to Locke’s entering 77 after winning the chess game. Oh well, it’s just a thought.

Good point and why not–-there had to be communication with something or someone. The only disturbing thing is why was Naomi carrying the photo??!!

About the photo…we know that when Des wrecked his boat on the island, it was during his solo race around the world sponsered by Widmore. We know that Mr. Widmore despises Desmond and would keep him from his daughter at any cost. It’s been stated on this website that perhaps Widmore had something to do with Des ending up on the island, no proof of this however. It’s possible that Mr. Widmore knows that Penny is desperately searching for Des…and after locke notified The DI mainland the hostiles had invaded, Widmore could have assumed Des “might” be there~which would explain why Naomi had the picture. OR, she may have been carrying the photo with her, so that if she did find desmond, she could show him the photo, say that she’s there on Penny’s behalf and having the photo would help her gain Desmonds trust. which, by the way, she did accomplish before she was killed.

oops, not round and round… Colhogan, finally found your thoery 7 pages back. So sorry. Aiite, nevermind. Suppose the difference is, I think Locke’s actions alerted DI or Widmore that something was wrong on the island.
What about this, the only reason that Naomi had the photo was to make sure that she found the right island. If say, Widmore had anything to do with Desmond being there and then him sending Naomi’s crew there, maybe Widmore also sent the picture to identify the island.
I was fairly certain that with, like, the sky turning purple, and the looking glass being online… that there wouldn’t be any communication going off the island, and certainly not any ‘distress signals.’ The others were too on top of things for that s—t to happen.
I think the cigar is just a cigar, and Locke knew there were explosives, and (he’s no idiot,) hit 77 assuming it would destroy the Flame.
Now what I want to know, is when we’re gonna see Mikhail’s motherf—king CAT again! It tipped Sayid off by scratching the rug, and I think it knew what it was doing!
The animals of this island are very clever.
Desmond was on the Island a long time and because there was communication someone found out he was there and told Penny’s Dad. Penny’s dad knew that Penny was looking for Desmond, and he may have found out that Penny found the Island. So it then becomes a “rush” for Penny’s dad to get to Desmond before Penny. (so I more or less agree with hope). Also - the looking glass girls were supposed to be on assignment in Canada?? Was Mikhail working with the guys who phoned Penny - and he thought the women had been sent to get rid of them? I do have to agree….looks like Mikhail had his own reasons for wanting the phone.
Did Naomi ever say why she was on the Island. Did she ever tell Desmond that it was Penny who sent her. I don’t remember that.
Yes - she did say she was hired by a company the was owned or hired by p. windmore……Kind of sucks when you think about it because if she never said it, well…….and then it is just oh well…. but yes FYI she did specifically SAY Pen. Co. hired her….SHE SAID IT - NOTHER Q. HER AND HER DAD against EACH OTHER? or are both on the same page……and hopfully maybe are they the good guys now…because if Pen lied..it was to save Dez or to get to the Island….but conformation YES - Naomi’s….get this (company) was hired….OK/

1) p. widmore? what is pennys dads name? do we know it? could h be p. widmore? pen. co…. it doesnt seem unreasonable to name a company after your daughter.
2) i cant remember, didnt desmond keep the photo? there was only one copy of it.
3) why was naomi speaking spanish when she thought she was gonna die?
Thanks Katrina:) Flann, 1) P. Widmore is Penny. Her dad’s name is Charles. I think both Charles and Penny are looking for Desmond/the island. 2) Des has a copy and at the end of season 2 when the guys call Penny to tell her they’ve found the electromagneticanomoly, she answers the phone, switches on the light and she has a copy of the exact photo. There seems to be at least three copies of this picture that we know of, unless someone else has a reasonable explanation on how one copy could be in more than one place. 3) It’s been determined that Naomi was speaking many languages when she first came to the island and was wounded. spanish, chinese i think, and a few others….it’s quite a few pages back, a theory that states how many languages she was actually speaking.
I think Naomi saying she was hired by P. Widmore is a ruse to cover up who she is really working for.
This theory definitely makes sense to me.

Exactly. Mikhail did not know who Naomi was, but WE know she’s lying about being with Penny - thanks to Charlie’s hand-written “Not Penny’s boat” note to Des. Naomi is with Widmore. She saw Mikhail’s Dharma jumpsuit and thought she was dealing with a real Dharma person and thus speaks Portugese to him - a language not many other people would know. BUT, Naomi didn’t know Ben had engineered the purge. Dharma no longer exists. Mikhail is scared for other reasons: its now clear her arrival on the island means the location of the island has been revealed. That’s why Alpert says to Ben “we got bigger problems to deal with than fertility issues”
