Flash Forward is the name of a real sci-fi book by an author named… Sawyer. Robert James Sawyer..

— lostincyberspace

In the Season 3 finale the name of the funeral parlour is Hoffs/Drawlar. This is an anagram of Flash/Forward.

Flash Forward is the name of a real sci-fi book by an author named… Sawyer. Robert James Sawyer..

Sawyer (the author not the actor) has been nominated six times for the Hugo award.

In Mr James Sawyer’s Hugo nominated book book a group of scientists push a button and a huge machine causes a time rift throughout Earth. The main character has a consciousness shift and sees his own future, allowing him and other key characters to attempt to change it.

Sound familiar?

The book contains a few more clues which I won’t spoil for you here, but anyone into Lost may be interested in giving it a read. See the book and more info here:

If all these allusions are purposefully buried in LOST, I wonder who in the world sits up researching and incorporating all of them. I rather hope they have a nice salary, too…

Intriguing theory. I checked out a few reviews of the book’s plot, and it sounds a bit like a plausible framework for the next seasons of LOST.

What would you do if you got a glimpse of your own personal future and it looked bleak? Try to change things, or accept that the future is unchangeable and make the best of it? In Flashforward, Nobel-hungry physicists conducting an unimaginably high-energy experiment accidentally induce a global consciousness shift. In an instant, everyone on Earth is “flashed forward” 21 years, experiencing several minutes of the future. But while everyone is, literally, out of their minds, their bodies drop unconscious; when the world reawakens, car wrecks, botched surgeries, falls, and other mishaps add up to massive death and destruction.” - Partial Review from Amazon.com

Perhaps the flash-forward was a collective experience? Or maybe no one was aware of the flash-forward… Hmm…

He who foresees calamities suffers them twice over. — Beilby Porteus

How outrageously awesome is that? That’s exactly what almost everyone on here has been saying since the finale episode. Since Jack and Kate (at least) don’t leave the island the “right” way, they’re forced to deal with their “calamities twice over” ie - Jack’s dad still alive - Kate’s dad still alive.

    I’m speechless.

I don’t know… as interesting and totally awesome that sounds, it sounds sort of far fetched. I guess I can’t really say for sure without reading the book but still, I think it may be just a coincidence.

I really like the idea of this post, and I did a little digging of my own. I was surprised when I stumbled on a piece of information from the only episode that I have never seen: Not In Portland. I was reading a synopsis, and apparently Juliet works for a firm named Mittelos Bioscience. Interestingly, Mittelos is an anagram for Lost Time (or vice versa). This seems to tie in with your post, as well as others regarding the time travel theory of the show.

This is just too good. And it totally doesn’t surprise me. In order to be a writer on that kind of show, you have to have these kinds of brilliant ideas.

  17. Rufus Jun 18, 2007 8:03 a.m. Comment: 17

Have many people read this book? Just curious because I just read it and although it would be cool if the show took alot from this book, to me at least it doesnt seem like its true. The only major thing I gleaned from it was that it gives us somewhat of a scientific reasoning for how time travel could be possible. And if the writers say everything can be proven with science thenthis could be a major thing, but overall I definately dont think the entire show is based off of this book. here may be a few major things like the explanation for time travel and attempting to change your own future after you see how it will turn out. Like to hear what anyone else who actually read the book has to say.

Also, the J in Robert J. Sawyer (the author) stands for James. Robert James Sawyer. One too many coincidences if ya ask me.

  20. Rufus Jun 18, 2007 2:49 p.m. Comment: 20

the coincidences with his name are nice and good and all, but has anyone besides me actually read this book? I’ll admit there are some consistencies between the show and the book, but come on people we cant base all this off a title, and the authors name and the awards he’s one……like i said before there are somethings in the book that relate to time travel perhaps and maybe desmonds visions, but id really like to hear some perspectives from people who have read the book.

  21. Rufus Jun 18, 2007 3:02 p.m. Comment: 21

It definately is a cool book and some stuff could easily be related to lost….let me know what you think Steve.

  24. Steve Jun 19, 2007 2:32 p.m. Comment: 24

ok so yeah im reading it now. very interesting. there is a reference to sydney….im on chapter 9 i think. the thing that most stuck out to me was that the whole experiment was like running on a computer just like in the swan station and how they talk about electromagnetism in the book and when the experiment began they all saw their futures just like desmond and one guy woke up naked sort of like desmond. they talk about pillars of black smoke. and CERN is sort of like dharma. running experiments and they had “an incident”. very interesting stuff. also they flashedforward to october 23 which is a number. i saw 4 a lot too. and of course the authors middle name james then sawyer. i think its james is it? well tell me if any of you read the book! i would reccommend it to lost fans or anyone really. :)

LOL. There is also a book called Lord of the Flies which mimics the first two seasons almost exactly… the island, whether or not to find shelter or seek rescue, the conflicts between the survivors / surviving without destroying each other, the so called “beast”(smoke). oh yeah and there were also some references to other famous books which were mentioned in one of the seasons too.

  33. dmartin Jun 25, 2007 12:06 a.m. Comment: 33

I agree with Rufus. Since reading this post I spent the last 2 days and read the entire book “Flashforward.” While there are many principles and similarities as far as the quantum physics of time travel and being doomed to repeat the future are connected between the book and LOST, I can’t say that the show is based off the book. I do concede the fact that there was probably some influence (the coincidence in the names/anagrams do seem s a bit much) but there’s a lot more in the picture. And I agree on the ending, a bit far-fetched. Except for the idea of immortality, although the means by which it is accomplished vary significantly between the book and the show. It was a good find though, lostincyberspace. Congrats to you on that. And the book is a good read regardless of its (possible) similarities to LOST.

I also found the part in the article that say’s “Sawyer’s work frequently explores the intersection between science and religion, with rationalism always winning out over mysticism” somewhat interesting. (perhaps a linkage to the Man of Science/Man of Faith episode?)

  37. jollyroger Jun 29, 2007 8:31 a.m. Comment: 37

I love the concept of this post as it seems to tie in with Locke’s comments though out the series e.g. ‘Jack, you’re not supposed to do this’. The conciousness shift in time could also explain how the Others know so much about the survivors backgrounds if they’re able to manipulate it…….great theory….too good to be true?

  38. frozenreads Jun 29, 2007 12:58 p.m. Comment: 38

a nice link, but I firmly believe this like other books etc seen in the series are easter eggs. I am sure these are books that the writers of Lost have read that have influenced their writing and felt a need to include them in the series somehow. It doesnt mean however that it has a major impact on the plot in any way.

It doesnt have anything to do with lost, there are two or three things that are similar, but i could find a book with two or three simiararities

  41. losttheorist Jul 4, 2007 12:31 p.m. Comment: 41

I’d agree with FrozenReads in that obviously the show isn’t a blatant plagiarism of any ONE author’s work but bits and pieces of the most interesting ideas of multiple authors added with the producers’ own thoughts.

What struck me was one of Robert James Sawyer’s common underlying themes which is the conflict between (as whoever wrote the wiki article stated) ‘mysticism’ and science. As far as I know, none of the theories that are on this and other sites, with their varying degree of depth, have addressed this issue. Yet for all the theories since the beginning of this show 3 years ago that have been debunked, primarily because vital pieces of information just hadn’t been revealed at the time, one THEME (not theory) remains true; and that is that for all the ‘special-ness’ the characters attribute to this island, every strange thing that happens to the losties that one may find ‘mystical’ or haunting, ends up getting explained by something common-sensical that someone else did, coincidentally or deliberately. However, there are certain things in the show that will necessitate an irrational explanation at some point (birds calling out Hurley’s name, Walt appearing everywhere, and the Island’s smoky ‘security’ system, to name a few).

The producers have said the next half of the show will make a significant shift in the storyline, and perhaps this will mean a jump from the ‘everything seemingly strange is just coincidental and has a scientific explanation’ theme to the explanation of strange happenings by irrational causes. At that point this particular author’s work may no longer be relevant.

  42. ProfOzone Jul 4, 2007 7:53 p.m. Comment: 42

losttheorist, I have to respectfully disagree. There are several theories on this site that address the conflict between “faith” and “science” in the show. One post of mine, in fact, cites it as the central conflict.

Some of us are of the opinion that the writers will deliberately remain ambiguous on this point, since that seems to be a goal of the show… do challenge our usual dualistic thinking.

  43. losttheorist Jul 5, 2007 9:45 a.m. Comment: 43

ProfOzone, apologies for my unwarranted assumption.

Would it be correct to conclude that the storyline pins the writers in a corner in which they have to explain vital parts of the show by means of either supernatural or scientific occurances? If not, then the story can not progress (unless ofcourse they find very creative ways to explain and still remain ambiguous — this ofcourse being the brilliance of the show.)

Maybe the whole island experience was a flash-forward and Jack and Kate altered their futures so that they never went to the island? And in the flash-forward sequence in “Through the Looking Glass” they’re conscious of the shift, and wish they could undo it?

  46. murphyface Jul 19, 2007 3:42 p.m. Comment: 46

Actually writers have admitted that the show is somewhat based on a book called “Lost Horizon” which talks about a plane crash in the indian mountains. They find a lost paradise where the people are offered eternal happiness if they stay. The main character doesnt believe them, thinking that they are trying to trap the survivors as slaves. He eventually gets them off the mountain and back to america, but regrets it, and spends the rest of his life traveling india looking for the hidden paradise.

i’m actually readingt he book now and so far chapters 12-17 can have some explanation for the time shift … shroedinger’s cat …which i thought was pretty cool concept….scientist pushing a button…something goes wrong….the whole world sees their futures for 2 minutes….interesting that a character in the book, ” Dr.Theodosios Procopides, who does not have a flashforward is presumed that he will be dead in 21 years ,,since that is how far in the future the rest of the world went …it is revealed so far that he will be killed by someone…so he posts a site as to who has any information on his death…..someone says they read a paper that he “will be survived by his son and wife”…. in flashforward episode jack shows kate the newspaper clipping …. now someone posted the clipping from lost … and it read “he will be survived by his teenage son…since i hear michael is coming back … the character of “Dr Theo P.” in the book “flashforward”..can be compared to Michael on Lost…interesting read so far…i really don’t think Lost is totally related to the book but there are similiar situations and is a cool book if your into heavy physics..protons..and colliding atoms..blah blah blah…i’ll finish reading and put some more input if i read anything interesting….

I read the book and there ARE a lot of similarities to LOST, but I doubt they would follow the book plot identically without giving it credit.

One of the key similarities is when the time rift happened, people blacked out, fell down stairs (Boone’s nanny), crashed their cars (Claire), fell off ladders (Des), etc. I’ll probably find more in the Group1 reviews.

yeah i read this book if im right the end suggests that the falshforward never happened when they attempted a second try, it i guess cancelled the first flashforward, if someone read this book can they exploain this to me…. what i got from thje book was that the first flashforward never happened. if this is true the only way i can imply this to lost is that Jack’s flashforward never happened because he corrected what was wrong or something like that, someone please hellp me out on this one.. it is interesting. So basically what i’m saying is either that the flash forward scene we saw in season 3 finale will not happen if jack fixes what he’s got to fix or will he remember what hes has to do the next time he gets on the island…. i know i;m all over the place with this one. be nice. cn’t wait what season 4 has to offer. am looking forward to the flashforward scenes. thanx guys this site is amazing.

  52. reccles Nov 18, 2007 1:21 p.m. Comment: 52

I’m thinking this has less to do with a major component of the show, and more of a “tip of the hat” to sci-fi influences they admire. There are numerous references to literature in the show, I think it’s the writers acknowledging when the “sample” an idea. These ideas may not be the backbone of the story, but are intended to give partial credit where credit is due.

I think the reference here might be that, in the lost island, there is some ability to see the effects of your actions. This would make the island the perfect place to study how the Valenzetti equation is affected by actions. This ability is only in some people (ie, talking to the island), and these people know certain events must occur for a certain outcome to come about. Des is a glimpse at how this process works. In a sense this wouldn’t be “time travel”, but more of a prescience. Des, didn’t arrive from the past, instead he was able to use a new kind of awareness.
