I believe that the flash forward is farther into the future than we think. Here are a few points to consider:
1) no one recognizes him as a survivor of flight 815 so possibly its been a few years since he was rescued
2) I do not think that Jack would fall apart that easily after a year or two - this would have to take several years to happen
3)Jack is so emotional about the funeral not because of who it is but of how many of them he has attended (remember on the island Jack’s number one goal is to get everyone off the island). I think that the funeral Jack goes to is for one of the last remaining survivors and in Jack’s mind that means he has little time to get back to the island and set things right.
Those are some really good points. They make a lot of sense. It’s funny though that Kate doesn’t show any remorse. Wouldn’t she if there were multiple deaths?
Well, all the drinking and drugs is also contributing to Jack’s emotional stability;where as Kate seems to be in a very postive , stable personal life and can control her emotions more. Well thats what I think…
That’s a really good point. The fact may be that Jack was more upset that yet another survivor had died, rather than mourning the loss of the person himself.
He feels that he could’ve prevented these deaths and now realizes that Ben was right.
As for Kate showing no remorse, it may be someone with whom she wasn’t close to… there were several characters on the island never introduced to us… it’s quite possible that it’s someone we don’t even know of at this point in time - a character who will be introduced next season perhaps.
Good theory! Point 1 really made me think.
But If Jack is upset that he made the wrong decision and caused the deaths (including the funeral that we saw him go to) then why would he think that going back to the island would set things straight? It’s already happened, you can’t change the past. Or can you?
We dont even know though if everyone is taken off of the island. What if Jack left a portion of the group back on the island. That would exlain why he has spiraled down so quickly.
And why does he want to get back to the island if he doesn’t have something to put right? And Jack says he is tired of lieing so its not like everyone came home and told everything that had happened.
I think they do recognize Jack. The fellow at the pharmacy seems to be reacting to something much larger than the car crash.
I do agree, though, that his remorse may be due to the number of deaths that have occurred. Ben told him he’d be killing 40 people, and slowly (through his decision) he is.
Alternatively, the funeral could be for 1) Locke - the man that tried to stop him, 2) Ben - the one man who could have helped him right things.
The newspaper that the stuardess hands Jack in the first scene of the episode was dated late April 2007. Don’t think she’s giving him a paper from the past. The date of the flash is around our present time
yeah that is true, but when did the crash of flight 815 happen?
Edwin: according to http://www.hansoair.org/oceanic.html
“tragedy struck the invincible Oceanic Airlines on September 22, 2004. Oceanic Airlines Flight 815 disappeared while travelling to Los Angeles, California from Sydney, Australia.”
