…it would appear that they have “created a monster”…

— lostmusings

Just a fleeting thought…is it possible, and / or has it already been suggested, that the island is man - made?

Could the island have been originally “constructed” as a biosphere of sorts on which various experiments (some involving human subjects) were to be conducted (like a big petri dish)?

Possibly the island existed before in it’s natural state - which would allow for the existence of previous societies (which might explain the four-toed statue) and for the possibility of the Black Rock shipwreck - but has since been cordoned off by some entity (one of the companies involved with Dharma?) and fundamentally changed via human attempts to control the environment and conduct experiments within that controlled environment.

If this is possible / true, it would appear that they have “created a monster” and (human behavior being what it is), various mini - societies (the Others / the Hostiles) have evolved out of power struggles, newly-formed hierarchies, power trips, and so on - basically just what might be expected when you leave a bunch of people in a situation like this.

The Losties, arriving by accident or by some other “plan”, have effectively thrown another big wrench into the spiral that the island is in.

This might provide enough latitude to explain all sorts of phenomenon on the island. Who knows what could happen if man were to “create” a whole micro-cosmos and start experimenting? Throw in a bunch of people and science in the mix and you’ve got a lot of variables interacting with each other. Perhaps all of this “playing God” has caught up to the island and its’ inhabitants.

It could also explain how we seem to have all of these various cultural, religious, scientific, social, literary, references being tossed around - almost as if it’s a huge melting pot of ideas and experiences.

I realize that this does not fully explain the interconnectedness between the characters / the unexplained coincidences, etc, but perhaps it’s all part of the natural (but actually unnatural / synthetic) effect of the man-made island on their minds.

It would seem that some individuals respond well to the island while others do not (psychologically and physiologically).

For example, it seems that Locke meshes with the island and, in some aspects, has “improved”, while others - like Jack and Sawyer - “seem” to rail against the island with everything they’ve got. Almost like they are “allergic” to the various properties of their surroundings. It would seem possible too that some of the individuals on the island have had really adverse reactions resulting in psychosis and /or hallucinations (like seeing dead people or remembering things differently than how they actually occured).

So, in the end, the island would be a real place with very surreal things happening on it due to all of this human mucking about.

The arc of the characters (particularly of the poor Losties) seems to be based on how they are “dealing” with their new environment. As they continue their attempts to escape or stay (whatever the case may be), we get to see their individual strengths and weaknesses surface. Along with this we get to see exploration of the whole human condition (faith / hope / logic / despair / will to live / love / hate / life /death, etc, etc).

I am sure that there is much more to say about this suggestion and quite likely a lot of disagreement - so go for it!

No disagreement here lostmusings.. I actually think you may be on to something.. I’ve been convinced that the Losties are being used as “lab rats” for a while now… I’ve had my suspicions… but what confirmed it for me was in the episode where syid was questioning Juliet, and Juliet told Syid, that if she told him what (other’s) were actually doing , that he would kill her (or similar).. I’ve often wondered what this something could be.. I mean they beaten, kidnapped and killed some of the Losties.. what could be worse?…..I dunno.. but I think your ideas could be a definite possiblity….Great post!
