Young Ben see’s his mother and this is where I think Jacob has a connection to the black smoke.

— rosesrred

SO we all know there is a giant monster that looks like smoke and is possibly more then one on the island. well did you ever stop and think about the ghosts we’ve seen on the island before? I think they have a connection. I think the the black smoke, or as I like to call it Mr. Smokey Pants, pretends to be those Ghosts or even people that are still alive, for whatever reason unknown. So here is a list of the people I think it has pretended to be.

1.)Yemi 2.)Dave 3.)Walt 4.)Anna Lucia 5.)Cooper 6.)Emily Linus 7.)Jacob?

I’m not sure about Jacks father though…the smoke may have pretended to be Mr. Shepard but I also think that Jack’s dad is still alive(Check my other theories for more on Jack dad).

Yemi: So we know about how Mr. Eko saw his brother, who is dead, on the island. We also saw how he didn’t talk to Eko at first and walked a way from him further into the jungle, a common trait of the ghost-like appearances by these people. I must also point out that the black smoke did show up right after yemi disappeared. We know that Yemi is in fact dead but what strikes me as odd is when he leads eko out to a field and tells Eko to admit his sins and then when Eko says no Yemi responds, “You speak to me as if I were your brother.” Then like I said before the smoke comes and kills him. Coincidence…..I think not…..Ha ha!

Dave: So we all know that Hurly had an imaginary friend named Dave who he made up and realizes wasn’t real when he was in the mental institution. SO why is Hurly seeing Dave again? WEll is you look at the way he acts it is odd. He walks away from Hurly leading him further into the jungle, that always seems to happen, and then tries to get him to commit suicide. I think the Monster is playing a head game with him and doesn’t want to kill Hurly, but you know maybe he wanted to see if he is worthy or something to be on it’s island seeing how it runs around acting like it owns the place, and why not…it’s freakin’ scary! not to mention the dinosaur noises it makes.

Walt: walt isn’t dead! so what the deal you may be asking me? well do you guys remember when Shannon saw him in the jungle with water coming out of his mouth? We know it wasn’t just her seeing him because Sayid saw him too. Well I could just say that it really as walt because walt isn’t dead, I think that may be why the writers decided to have water coming out of his mouth, because they didn’t want us to get the impression that it was real. SO I think he was really the smoke. I also must add that this theory is not originally my own and I do not remember who wrote it but It was good and I thought you all should know about it.

Anna Lucia…I don’t have mush to elaborate on this one exept that when she was dead eko saw her…I don’t remember much and was only recently reminded of this…so I think she might be a part of this whole smoke thing…sorry I don’t have more on this

Cooper: The real Mr. Sawyer and John Locke’s Dad. So basically I don’t really think that he is dead and I think that it was a set up by Jacob and Ben to prove John’s loyalty. Notice how obnoxious Cooper is being…honesty I think that the monster is seeing Mr. Cooper how John sees him. He really wasn’t that rude and annoying before when we saw him in previous shows…he was just mean.

Emily Linus:ok so last weeks episode we saw a little bit more into the strange life of Ben, I feel sad for his younger self but still love to hate him. Young Ben sees his mother and this is where I think Jacob has a connection to the black smoke. Notice how Ben’s Mom didn’t want him to die from running through the electric fence or follow him. This think Jacob is the smoke. I think he works with the hostiles and that the people who came onto the island after the purge to work with Ben have no idea about the smoke at all. Hence I think Juliet lies when she says it doesn’t like the fence. Who knows what that was really about, or maybe she does know and she just said that so kate didn’t get suspicious. I think Jacob wanted Ben to leave the Initiative so he could meet richard. I think they knew about him and knew he would help them. Maybe the smoke was able to find out about him through the memories of his father on a beer run when he leaves the protected areas. Remember when Eko is face to face with the monster the first time and we see those flashes…FYI but those flashes are really pictures of his memories(play it in slow mo).

so this is my theory…another FYI …I types all this before and i accidentally shut my compy off so much of my theory is what I remembered typing. I know I’m forgetting one of the ghost appearances that I originally wrote about and maybe even other that I forgot. please tell me what you think and add to this. I think we could all be on to something here.

    This is an old theory

nice job! first of all… please improve grammer, i mean some of the ime i couldnt even read it. jacob, said help me to locke. the only reason i would see him saying that is becuase ben has him on lockedown. that gray dust that was surrounding the cabin keeps him in. he does have some pretty awsome powers and stuff or whatever, but if he was the smoke thing, how is he getting out of the gray dust barrier? just doesnt make sence… eko saw anna in a dream btw, (by the way) so i dont really think that counts. also, if the smoke is pretending to be his dad, who died, the smoke would have or will disapear when it wants to leave so we’ll see about that… and why on earth would juliet fake the fence hurting the smoke… i mean that wouldnt be really logical or help anyone out… good post though.

Firstly sirK, unless you can learn to spell properly its not advisable to patronise other members. Secondly, these observations have been made SO MANY TIMES. Nice all the same though

My probem with your theory is this: as we saw a few episodes back, the black smoke apparently cannot cross the sonic fence. You are saying the ghost visions are actually the black smoke. problem: when ben saw his dead mother for the very first time, she was outside his window, inside the sonic fence wall!!! If the smoke cannot pass through the sonic fence, how did it get outside ben’s window when he was kid? There are possibilites: 1) someone deactivated the fence, 2) it went underground, 3) maybe it went over the fence as Profozone has mentioned, but I believe at this point that the visions are not the black smoke, at least not till we find out how the fence works exactly to ward off smokie.

roserred, I too thought was leaning towards the idea that it was in fact our friend Smokey, taking the form of all the people you just named.. but someone, recently brought up a good point that crushes this theory… If the sonar fence is designed to keep Smokey out.. then how did Ben’s mother/Smokey appear to him at his bedroom window.. how did Smokey get past the fence?..

Good thoughts.. You might want to check out my previous post on this very subject “The Smoke Monster is interactive” In that post I suggested that the monster has the capability of interacting with humans. This is a sci-fi theme used in the movie Space Odyssey where the computer learns and can interact on its own. I tend to think that the Smoke Monster is a entity that is under someones control(Ben or Jacob)

My comment to SirK, echoing BritishKev. Dude, “improve your grammar??!!” Your comments are some of the most disjointed, incoherent, mispelled crap on this site. Talk about the pot calling the kettle black! Good grief man, get a dictionary or avail yourself of the spell check on this site!

As for the smoke crap - Let me ask a question that may have been brought up before, sue me if it has….if smoke, well, FLOATS in the air, then why doesn’t it just, oh, I don’t know….FLOAT OVER the fence. My guess is that the writers never took a physics or chemistry class, being high-school dropouts and all…. We also know that the smoke can go underground (tried to drag Locke there). So if the Car Exhaust can do that, then certainly it should easily be able to tunnel through any crevice… The sonic fence versus blacky is a flawed concept to begin with….

You’re certainly correct about that L… either there’s a reason that the monster couldn’t hop the fence, or the writers made a significant error.

I’m not sure L Meister.. but it’s been posted before that Smokey is unable to leave the ground, thus making it impossible to go over the fence, into the barracks area….. I’ll admit, I’m not 100% positive whether this is a fact revealed on the show or just a theory originated from someone on this site…but it’s definitely what’s been suggested around here…

That fence was put there to keep out people.. If the smoke monster wanted to go over the fence then it would..without any problem. The smoke monster didnt cross that fence when Juliet was there with Kate because its being controlled by the others. Whether it be Jacob, Richard or Ben, that sonar fence stopping Smokey was a huge put on, an act for the sake of Kate getting to trust Juliet.

That seems very likely to me also, tharde.

Hi there, I like parts of this theory. Firstly I think there is an important pattern with all of the “ghosts”- they seem to want to lure people away, Dave-Hurley, Yemi-Eko, Walt-Shannon, Christian Shephard-Jack, Aaron (in the water)-Charlie. Theres quite a few examples. I dont actually think the balck smoke is the ghosts though. Mainly cause of the much commented sonar fence and Ben’s mum problem, (however-we dont really know whether the night Ben was stopped running past the fence by his Mum was the same night his mother tapped on his window). I think when the black smoke looked at Eko it was “reading” him..looking at his past, no idea why… I really agree with the Anthony Cooper theory.. i.e. in the brig was he real, he certainly acted a little odd.. he bit John’s hand straight away.. I dont think Anthony really hated John, and the only things he said where about how he got on the island and about John killing him.. basically only relevant to what the others wanted John to believe..

WOW…I didn’t realize how many people have posted on my theory…thank you!

(PLEASE READ!!! important NOTE TO ALL WHO VISIT!!!) I would REALLY appreciate IT if people would stop commenting on grammar and spelling on matter who they are or to who evers theory it may concern. I am aware that I SUCK AT spelling. It does not make this web site a better place, or community oriented, if you complain about it all the time. if you have a problem with it wasn’t ment for you move on and don’t read it, but it doesn’t make people happy when you tell them what to do or lash out on their mistakes.

I know my theory has some loose ends but I think that all theories do. most of them aren’t even in depth but hey they are theories none the less. I do think that the smoke is controlled, maybe even if jacob can’t leave the house (I had forgotten about the black dust, maybe it’s dead smokey? random thought on the theory that the smoke is more then one entity…anyway enough of that tangent) I think that it was also to get kate to trust her to make her feel safer when they get away from it and like juliet really cares about her well being. Also to show kate that even the others don’t know what it is or know everything about the island.

this would also explain how Ben’s mom was on the outside of the window. Or maybe it doesn’t like the fence and it just happened to be deactivated…who knows.

Just thought you should all know about the coincidence of the show that was shown before the last episode. The mentioned the smoke right after the ghosts and implied somewhat that they may be connected.
