Is Lost at least, in part, based on the Dark Tower?

This is my first post to this site, so hopefully this idea hasn’t been done to death. There have been numerous references to the works of Stephen King throughout the series, some obvious, some not. Ben asks to get a Stephen King book while he’s being held captured, Juliette is reading one of his books during their little book club. One of the less obvious references is Ben’s use of the rabbit with the big 8 on the side. That’s from “On Writing”. First, something not King related. When I first got into the show, I read up on it, and was directed to read the book “The 3rd Policeman”, which sucked big time. The creators, I believe it was Lindelof, said reading it would give the viewer an edge on understanding what was going on. It is about a man who, along with his partner, kill and rob an elderly man. The man is then killed by his partner (we don’t know this til the end of the novel) and proceeds on an adventure into his own surreal hell. Its supposed to be a comedy; it isn’t. At any rate, at the end, he sort of realizes he’s dead, runs into the partner that killed him, and ends up somehow back at the beginning of his adventure in hell, like time just reset on him. Now, this all relates later. In the Dark Tower series, there is, of course, the Tower. It is at the core of everything, like the hub in a wheel. All the different realities and universes are connected to this tower. At the top sits the creator, although the bad guys all say the room at the top is empty. Enter Roland, the protagonist of the series, on a quest to find the tower and keep the Crimson King from destroying the beams that hold the tower up, crashing the tower and ending all the worlds. The beams are electromagnetic, and there are six of them holding it up, with stations at each end of the beam. Which of course immediately reminded me of the setup of the stations on the island. The fact that some are named after animals only reinforces the reference, as that is how they are all named in the book. Also, the Crimson King and Jacob share a commonality. Both are mysteriously absent throughout the story, despite having set its events into motion. (the crimson king went nuts and killed himself). The King used his minions to undo the beams, even after his death. Sort of like the Others. Oh, and numbers are very, very important in the Dark Tower. Specifically, 19 and 99. dark tower spoilers Finally, and this is what has to do with the 3rd Policeman, is that at the very end of his quest, after reaching the top floor, Roland is sent back to the beginning of his quest, and time is reset. He is sent back with the tool he needs to complete his journey for real this time. Small solace, but it sure does remind me of Desmond, sent back time and again to save the world. Ultimately, there are obvious similarities between Lost and the Dark Tower. It might just be thematic similarities, maybe just stylistic, or maybe more than that. Its not really a theory, but it sure does make you think. Maybe, just maybe, the island is the version of the tower in this reality. (in the Dark Tower, it manifested itself in various ways in various worlds. In one world, it was rose, then a skyscraper) I might be totally off-base, but there are too many similarities to ignore.

Hey Zack, definitely an interesting read! I’m not sure about all of it coming into play, but some of it may be plausible.

Wow…very interesting. With regard to ” The 3rd Policeman”, maybe who “killed” them is Jacob?
