Not so much a theory of mine, just a question.

Who the heck is Jacob? So many theories mention him, does anyone have any evidence, or at least a good best guess? Is he Christian? Anthony Cooper? Ben’s father? A giant computer unground secretly producing lists for the others to follow?

I think that Jacob is actually THE Jacob, son of Isaac, son of Abraham. I think that he possesses the legendary ‘Book of Abraham the Jew’ the book that contained the recepie for the philosopher’s stone and the elixer of life.

I favor the computer idea… or the name of the person who runs the computer. Perhaps the eye-patch guy. I have a couple posts on the subject.

That’s an interesting idea, L. Very interesting indeed.

I think that Jacob is actually Lenny (the connect-four guy in the loony bin). He’s the one who is always chanting the numbers.

Les: have you read The Alchemist? Your post made me think so. If so, it’s an interesting reference, given that that book is about pursuing your own personal legend, and that by focusing in the moment, one can learn to communicate with the Soul of the World and change reality (lead to gold, a person becomes the wind, etc).

Similar to what Locke and Walt have demonstrated.

Well Nickee….I still kinda believe Jacob is or was at one time the leader of the others….I seriously question if hes alive now though. Which I know doesnt make sense to the reference of jacobs list in present time.

I like Les’s idea about the Book of Abraham. But it could be a computer that has that book as part of it’s programming? Or maybe it’s J.A.C.O.B.—just a computer of ben’s? :)

i think Danielle could have some connection with Jacob! she’s up to something. on the island 13 years and never came across the Flame station or Sonar Barrier? come on she’s lieing! Is she Jacob or his messenger!

That’s something I haven’t thought of, Jacob doesn’t necessarily have to be a man, could be a woman. or a computer. Whatever it is, it’s feared and followed. I’m not a very religious person, not to say I don’t believe in God, I just know very little about the Bible, So Les’s comment is a bit over my head~But very interesting. Thanks all :)

My thoughts on Jacob are based on the brain washing video Karl was watching. The text in reference to Jacob read “God Loves You As He Did Jacob.” I’m going to go out on a limb and say God doesn’t love computers, so I think hes a person. The fact that the text read “Loved Jacob.” Past tense, gives me the idea Jacob is no longer alive, or God stopped loving him perhaps.

I don’t know if this is important or not, but the Biblical Jacob is kind of a con man. He fools his father, Issac, into thinking that he (Jacob) is actually his brother (Esau) so that he will receive the blessing Issac was going to give to Esau. Issac is blind and he tells the brothers apart by touching their arms (Esau’s is hairier). So Jacob disguises himself as his brother by wearing the skin of an animal.

Later Jacob has a switcheroo pulled on him. He falls in love with Rachel and agrees to work seven years for her father in order to marry her. The father disguises his older daughter, Leah, as Rachel on the night of the wedding so that Jacob winds up married to (and having sex with) Leah. He then has to work another 7 years to get Rachel.

I’m not so sure the Jacob of the brainwashing film and the Jacob of “Jacob’s List” can be connected. In any case, the comment about God and Jacob in the film wasn’t really saying anything about Jacob so much as it was saying something about God. That is, take a person who you think of as blessed (an AI can be blessed, by the way) and realize that God’s love for that person is extended to you as well. The phrase might be in the past tense because it refers to a specific blessing (rather than because the blessed no longer exists). Bottom line: there are many ways to interpret the phrase in terms of what or who it literally refers to, but the literal aspects of the phrase were surely not the point.

I was thinking in the brainwashing film it was referring to the actual biblical jacob not the one on the island that apparently is there somewhere

Hm, I can see this website becoming a bit of an addiction for me, as none of my friends watch the show, and I’m a bit of a Lost freak. I look forward to many enlightening discussions in here.

I’m not sure i think the video refers to the biblical Jacob, maybe it does. Why out of all the characters in the bible that God loved, would it specify Jacob. I think it refers to the Jacob we know very little about and was placed there as a minor clue, or a minor mind f#*k, however you want to look at it.

I really don’t believe it refers to a computer or AI of any kind. I mean sure anything can be blessed I guess. I can have a priest bless my toaster in hopes of it making better toast I suppose, but I don’t think God loves or has any place upstairs for my appliance.

Anyway, just my thoughts. Thats the beauty of Lost none of us really know what the hell is going on, and its extremely entertaining to speculate.

Matt great to have you aboard….and yes this site can be an addiction of sorts. Dude that sucks none of your friends are into the show. Im in college and all my pals and I gather around the tube every freakin wed night. Theres like 10 of us involved. Anyhoo, I believe it could be the Biblical Jacob because Jacob in the Bible (while not the founding father so to speak, that was grandpa Abraham) he was given the name Israel and all the tribes of Israel and Juda were created from all his children (Benjamin, Simeon, Rueben etc) I mean he was “the guy” so to speak of Judeaism (and of course there was David later down the line). But I do believe Jacob on the show is the real leader of the others we just havent seen him yet.

  17. ProfOzone Mar 28, 2007 3:41 p.m. Comment: 17

Well, in the phrase “God loves you as he loved Jacob”, the name “Jacob” isn’t just being pulled out of the Bible at random. Jacob is the one who eventually becomes known as Israel. It really isn’t surprising to see the name “Jacob” in the phrase. Nor is it surprising that someone named Jacob figures into the plot of Lost (Jacob isn’t an especially unusual name). Of course, that doesn’t mean there isn’t a connection, but my point is that I’m not sure, even if there is a connection, how much it really tells us.

I believe the phrase on the brainwashing video, “God loves you as he loved Jacob”, is in reference to the biblical Jacob. This is because it is said in the bible that God love Jacob and hated his brother Esau.
