Well, that’s TWO useful Dharma stations that good ole boy Locke has blown up now, and I’m having some suspicions about him that goes beyond his simply being manipulated by the island.

A couple of things really bothered me about Locke in this last episode. First, his preoccupation with the computer chess game. There they were in a new environment and threatening situation, and while Sayid and Kate had their minds on the situation at hand, Locke gets engrossed in a computer game of chess??? They were getting answers to questions about the island and it’s inhabitants, and Locke wanders off, not interested, to play chess with a computer? And then when he gets results, I can see him putting in the code for the first couple of items, as they were related to the possibility of getting off the island. But when the question came up of had the station been taken over by hostiles and if so, press 77, the very first thing that crossed my own mind, and I’m that of many out there, was surely he’s smart enough to not put in that code because it’s so obvious that it’s the signal to destroy the station, so that it’s not in the hands of the hostiles. Did it not cross his mind?

Either Locke is a simple-minded idiot who is easily distracted from the adult world by computer games, and unable to put 2 and 2 together re: the 77 code, or there is something else about him.

It can be argued that the island/others are manipulating him. Well, up to a point. Giving him doubts about the validity of pushing the button in the first hatch, that was manipulation. But from that point on, it was not. He had a choice. Most people would have simply walked away from the button-pushing and allowed whoever wanted to continue pushing the button to do so, allowing them their choice too. But Locke was not content to have his choice and allow others to have their choice as well. It would appear that his personality is such that he wants to force others to live by (and suffer consequences for) his beliefs, or was that merely the appearance he gave outwardly?

Then the computer business. Maybe he really was just a simple-minded idiot who cannot stay focused on the here and now. But his dogged determination put me in mind of someone who knew what they were after. He did show some initial surprise when the video popped up, but that does not necessarily mean it was not what he was looking for. He could have merely been surprised at the video itself, expecting something else, or at how easy it was, etc. And to put in that code, how could anyone in his situation miss the implications of that ?

I do not know where Locke fits in exactly, is he the real Jacob, is someone/thing in his mind influencing his behavior? But it is not a coincidence, IMO, that twice now he has single-handedly completely destroyed two valuable (to the Losties) structures, with it appearing that he was just a stubborn not-too-bright innocent. Once is a coincidence, twice is not.

Make that three times, ozzig. Well, three times after a fashion. John was also the one who hit Sayid on the back of the head in season 1 just as he was triangulating a signal that (it was thought) might get them off the island. Indeed, John has classically conspired to keep people on the island.

I forgot about that one! They need to get together and put on the anti-Locke brakes.

What about the fact that Locke looked the security camera straight in the eye before he started the chess game. Is he smarter than we are giving him credit for?

Wow you made a good point! I would have to agree that it is not an accident that Lock destroyed the Flame station. I think the creaters of the show have been giving us clues about Locks true nature from the begining. I do not think he is evil, but I think that he will do Anything to keep him and everyone on the island. To him the island is the “real world” and the real world as everyone else knows it is what Lock is desperatly trying to escape from.

I agree. It is conceivable that Locke is only looking out for his own self-interests, sabotaging rescue, simply because he knows the island healed him and it won’t be so if he leaves. It’s not good enough if the others get rescued and leave him behind, he wouldn’t have friends or a somewhat elevated status. It could even be on a subconscious level.

Of course, he could join the “others”, thereby having the company of a small society he seems to need. For that reason, I’m inclined to think his motives go beyond his own self-interest. He does not want either the island itself, or it’s inhabitants, or both, to be found. He does not want his fellow losties rescued. Perhaps that is merely a by-product of protecting the island from discovery. Or, maybe he knows something they do not, and is doing for their own good.

I also don’t regard him as evil. He could just be a selfish SOB, but I have my doubts there too. I also don’t think he’s a moron. The guy knows something and is protecting someone/something, I’m pretty sure of it.

i think there is definitely something about locke… he definitely is passionate about things at certain times that make you question what his real intentions are…

or it could simply be that he doesn’t want to be rescued because the island is the only place he’s able to heal after his injuries..

then he also believes he has a connection to the island itself (remember when he went into that tent and spoke to boon). he thinks he can speak to the island…

the only entity on the island that has been able to become the form of a dead character is the black smoke… could locke have some kind of connection with the smoke?

Don’t forget about the fact that Locke spent time as a pot-growing hippie on a commune in Humbolt County. I suspect that further flashbacks will reveal that Locke knows alot about what is truely happening to all of the Losties and that he will ultimately be the guiding force behind several of them reaching enlightenment. He not only looked the security camera in the eye, but he has looked this island in the eye and he has a better understanding of what the island is than any of them. Do you recall when he put that goop on Boone’s headwound and Boone promptly had a vision of the smoke monster killing Shannon which made Boone feel “relieved”? Locke’s fascinated response to this was “Is that what it made you see?” Don’t be fooled into thinking that Locke was talking about the goop he put on Boone’s head. The goop was not hallucinogenic, it was antibacterial. No, Locke was talking about the island. He was asking “Is that what the ISLAND made you see.” Locke is beginning to lose interest in the day-to-day affairs of his pals because he is starting to detach himself from the petty pursuits of the world of the living. This is the first step on the path to enlightenment and Locke is farther along that path than any of the other castaways.

but locke did in fact try to communicate with the outside world first be the dish and then with the sonar device but they didn’t work.

and again as i always say what if locke was meant to beat the chess game

and are we forgetting that locke (like eko) was confronted by the smoke entity and saw something but we didn’t.

and when locke hit sayid over the head it was to stop him from finding the location of the radio transmitter which probably is another station and it was a bit early in the show to find that …

All good points. At this stage I think any/all of it could turn out to be true. We’re supposed to be getting a Locke-centric episode that reveals how he got in the wheelchair, that should provide further enlighenment as to his character. I think I’m just wanting him to turn out to be a bad guy because I’ve never really liked him, although I cannot say exactly why.

  10. lostboy09 Mar 11, 2007 8:49 p.m. Comment: 10

wow now this is good stuff. Yeah I dont dislike Locke at all, its just for a long while now I have had a funny feeling about him. I keep imagining the show going on down the road and we find Locke to either be a bad guy and has been the whole time or turns to bad. By the way les, i like your comment. Oh and with that has anyone noticed that when certain characters reach said “enlightenment” (aka boone, eko to a degree) they soon after die and Locke is usually very instrumental in their development. Just pointing it out that as soon as a character comes to terms with an issue they usually die. Perhaps Locke is working for fate to solve everyones issues and thus no longer cheat death (as desmond has stated is the case with charlie)

I just want to comment on one of ur comments about Danielle’s crew’s “sickness”

I think the sickness is brainwashing….I think Cindy and the captured Losties were brainwashed too.

You should check my theory out, Jim Jones Cult, as it delves into this brainwashing.

I think that when Locke looked into the smoke and seen something beautiful he indeed seen the the origanal purpose of the Dharma progect.I think in some way that he feels he can save the progect or save someone. He is drivin by emotion, his emotions. He does not like anyone to tell him “he cant do something”.Most of these complexes come from his past.He is on a greater path than the rest, thats why he seems suspicious. He does not like being made a fool of,therefore he is also showing and proving to himself what he’s really made of.

ozzig, i hear you suck the dick of many horses. that is all

  21. ozzig May 31, 2007 1:35 p.m. Comment: 21

You sound jealous. Is it because the horses complained about you?

You and your little buddy came on this site and posted bogus pervert theories because you couldn’t think up anything better, and because you’re pervs. Then when you got ribbed for it, you whined like a couple of snot-nosed brats. And of all the people who ribbed you for those perv theories, you singled me out to start insulting with obcenities, which means I really must have hit a nerve when I spoke out the truth on them.

Funny thing about you is: you don’t appear to be capable of any kind of intelligence in your insults. If you’re going to insult someone, at least try to sound like your brain functioned in the process. The best you can come up with are the obscene equivalents of “you’re fat and ugly”, like a 5 year old, except raised in Perville.

We could spend a lot of time trading obscenities, but for me, it would be like having a one-sided conversation with someone who can’t think up anything beyond the simplest of insults. If you were capable of coming up with anything more intellectually stimulating, I’d say bring it on, but as it is, you’re just a little perv who’s a sore loser in the words game.

  22. LocketheCasbah Jan 22, 2008 3:35 p.m. Comment: 22

Locke is such an interesting character to me, and there is still a good 10-20 years in his life that the show has not touched upon. We’ve only seen him as a younger man with hair and daddy issues, and then within days before the crash. I think the writers intentionally want us to believe that he is still as emotionally unstable as he was when he was a younger man.

However there are clues to what may have happened in that 10 or so year period that we have yet to touch upon. One thing that has always caught my ear is when he states “don’t tell me what I can’t do”. It sounds like it’s rehearsed, possibly a sentence he says to people that undermine his abilities and confidence. A sentence he was told to say when such a situation would arise. He does have a past with support groups and a lot of times in those groups you are paired off with a sponsor to help you at your weak moments.

Another clue is that he went by commander and had a lot of interest in the military as far as his apartment decor went. He eludes to being in the Navy and even his clothes that he wears are the same colors as military drabs. I wouldn’t be surprised that in the next season we see John get involved with another father figure via help groups who would happen to be someone of military involvement and either learns his skills from this person or possibly actually joins the Navy. Commander could even be a nick name this new figure gives him. That person might be the reason that Locke has all the military artifacts that he has, maybe they belonged to his companion who could have passed away. We will see.
