In Japan, a bamboo forest sometimes surrounds a Shinto shrine as part of a sacred barrier against evil.

In “Pilot - Part I”, you will notice Jack is alone in the jungle when the plane crashes. Many have argued that he was not approached by the black smoke solely based on the fact that he was surrounded by bamboo.
Later, and in quite a few episodes, many of the other losties and even Rousseau, have been protected by jumping into a bamboo cage of sorts.
Out of curiosity, not knowing much about bamboo, I went to wikipedia, and found this interesting information:
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bamboo
Scroll down to the “Bamboo in Human Culture” area and read from there. Some of this info is intriguing, to say the least.

That is amazing. Could most definatly be an explanation. Nice find! =)

I knew there is something wacky about Cerebus and those bamboo cages.

If Cerebus is a tulpa, then maybe the bamboo cages are a protective mechanism the human brain uses. Or maybe Cerebus chased them in there on purpose…? I don’t know, this one has me confused.
we should refer to dab’s theory on Cerebus:

Except that the only instance of bamboo “protecting” is when Jack wakes up on the island. The other times people are hiding from the “monster” they hide in the midst of a batch of trees that aren’t bamboo.

LOL, sorry Stip, I know, you’ve been having a bad day today ;-)
Good find, Andrelus. Thanks kat and Stip for the background information you provided. Makes sense.
A second theory, the fire cycle hypothesis, argues that the death of the adult plants has evolved as a mechanism to create disturbance in the habitat, thus providing the seedlings with a gap to grow in. This hypothesis argues that the dead culms create a large fuel load, and also a large target for “lightning strikes”, increasing the likelihood of wildfire.
It was raining when cerberus approached Kate and Juliet, lightning would mean a severe threat to smokey surely, being all magnestic n stuff
