“The monster (Jim)”
— TheHolyStickman
There are many hints to the monster not being whole, or there are differant monsters all across the island. The pilot part one shows that the camp look at where the noise of the monster is coming from. Then their heads snap back another way because they hear the monster in a differant place. Read on;
The monster (Jim, as so correctly stated by steve) shows a lot of differant charachteristics in differant places on the island. In Walkabout Locke encounters the monster and it doesnt do anything to him. He meets it again in exodus part 2 (I think) and it tries to drag him under ground (Ben talked about being summond by Jacob, mabe this was it).
Simarally with Eko he seems to scare it off in his episode in season two. But he meets it in cost of the living and it kills him. All of these monsters seem to be scared of a bamboo cage or one of the pylons.
Maybe there are just two monsters one controlled Jacob and one gone wild!! Jacob is reasonable and doesnt kill people. But the other monster is like a child. It doesnt know the coniquencs of his actions and is scared by people. I think if there is one that is controlled by Jacob he killed Eko because it was not a simple snatch and kill buisness like the pilot. He hit him the shape of a cross.
Or there could be lots of differant monster that are all experiments of the DHARMA each one with a differant personality, so that they could explore the island with caution. But the monsters got out of hand when the DHARMA initiative was destroyed.
Finally a differant theory, The monster/s are there to stop the people that work in the stations ,except the pearl, from getting to each other or the main houses. Similaraly to the other paragraph the monsters went off to explore differant parts of the island when the DHARMA was destroyed.
Facts . The others dont know what the monster is . They know it doesnt like their fences . It has killed the pilot, Eko, (sort of Shannon) . It has attacked/ or encountered Kate Juliet Eko Locke . It can see into other peoples flashbacks (It did with Eko) . It DOESNT attack at random . In left behind it appeared in 3 parts then joined into one
So thats the monster and 3 differant theories about him. we’ll probly never find out what it is but its worth guessing lol.

there is definitley 3 monsters that i can think of:
There is a giant four toe civilization on the other side of the island…hahaha
No really there are at least two “monsters”. This becomes clear on the dialog between Lock and Eko by the plane from Nigeria. Lock said he saw a Light while Eko saw darkness. Each one represents a force, good and evil and both are fighting for the outcome of the island.
I think Eko has died because he was trying to put Lock on the right path, so the Smokey tried to ilude Eko with the whole brother history to get him out of Lock’s way, otherwise Lock wouldn’t force Desmond to blow the hatch.
Like I said earlier and many have pointed if Walt has something to do with the Smokey (which I think he does) he not that good. His past gives you some pointers on that.
Also the Smokey divides in three and it’s probably based on the Cerberus which in mitology is sort of a gate keeper. And most of the times we see either as one or two.
very interesting, i think jim is the good guy btw. and which of ur theories is in our competition?
not this one steve lol
The one about broken pencils
