I’m not sure about you other “real” Losties, but the recent influx of idiotic theories, comments, and general rubbish that has been posted on this site from people who are either certified tards or truly ignorant has me a little “put off”.
Let’s make it a point to vote accordingly and categorize these trollish, debunked, and basically moronic theories as we see fit in order to maintain the integrity of the site.
Nameste
Well…I think that is a little mean. Many are trying to just have fun. I think if people try to post and it is not that appealing, oh well. I think most people here love the show, except for those that insult others and post absolutely trollish theories making fun of lost. Many just dont have the time to research and post the best theories. Many post ideas at the moment when they get a chance because they like lost and wanna know what others think of there thoughts. Therefore, I think if it is not trollish or offensive and the person posting gave there thoughts they are ok with me. So what is a “Real” Lostie?? Is it someone that reads every debunked theory, and previous theory on this site before they post a real lostie?? U gotta be kidding me.
I understand what you are saying badazzmarv and I don’t disagree. I didn’t intend to be “mean”. I just hate to see 20 some “theories” in a day that have been re-hashed, debunked, or are otherwise crap.
My point is that some people that have recently joined don’t actually take the time to read up on what has been posted already, read what has been already debunked, and then actually use their “noodle” before they post a “theory”.
If they were real LOST fans, then they would have seen more than just a few episodes and would know that “smokey” isn’t a cloud of nanobots, the Island isn’t purgatory, and any number of other things that the average LOST fan already knows.
I just hope we can work as a group to “purge” (to use a term we all know) the stupid stuff. If the person(s) who posted it get “voted” off, then so be it. Just use your common sense and the options on this site to do so.
I’m not trying to make waves here badazz, just trying to remind people that they can contribute for the good of all here.
Cool?
Got u. I think I understand. It just sounded a little mean. And of course it is cool!! :+)
By the way, I have voted positively for your theories more than once bad.
Perhaps my ire was up with my first post, but I didn’t mean any harm.
I’ll try to be a little more diplomatic from here on.
Cool brutha :)
And all is right with the world…
Lol….you are definitely cool in my book. I just read alot peoples posts..and it seems that some people actually try and watch the show…they just post uninteresting theories. I probably have done so myself, perhaps thats why I thought it was mean..lol
That was actually my first post here. It was harsh I know. ..
I spend a lot of time (too much) reading the theories here and trying to come up with a “unified” theory or the big picture, but it is impossible with this show . That is what makes it so appealing I guess.
I’ll be disappointed if it all goes to hell. I’m worried it will end up like X-Files ya know? What a convoluted crappy mess that ended up to be.
Ah well, just a bloody TV Show. :)
Here’s to Charlie!
Oh hey, check this out “A Wrinkle in Time”. Probably have already, but the similarities as far as books and plots with this show goes are uncanny.
Well, I have been trying to come up with one theory for a long time. I just post about things that I think I noticed mostly. I love trying to decipher the so many clues that the writers throw at us. It is all fun!!
Do any of you guys and gals here actually communicate beyond this website?
Like Yahoo IM etc…
I would hate to search for hours for your member name here only to find you have no email addy posted.
By the way your blog is coming up 404.
Would be nice to link up with some fans of this site and show.
I’ll go out on a limb here and post mine. donaldsond@yahoo.com
I am neither mean or harsh, but I have to admit that it’s frustrating to see good theories move down the list and not get the attention they so richly deserve, while time is wasted having to wade through the endless questions, debunked theories and repetitive theories which are being posted. That takes the fun out of it for me!
Amen dabia!
Sorry to cut your name short but I can’t pronounce it. Sounds like a cheese of sorts. :)
My point exactly though. The good ones (theories) are getting pushed aside while (ehemmm! sorry trying to be diplomatic here) the rather questionable ones get votes from the same people who themselves post (ehemmm! ‘scuse me) questionable ones.
Tis a fair court…
“She turned me into a newt!” “I got better”
DoubleD - Good point. I admit, I wrote the last nanobot thing. In my defense, I have watched the show pretty faithfully since the first episode, and I think I pay pretty close attention, like a good TV viewer should. Furthermore, the smoke monster does look and act very much like a cloud of nano-robots. What I didn’t know before I wrote the post was this (from LostPedia):
“This idea of the monster analyzing the people on the Island directly relates to the theory that the monster is a nanotechnological ‘swarm,’ a concept illustrated in the novel ‘Prey,’ written by Michael Crichton … . However, the nanobot theory was debunked at the Lost panel during the 2006 Comic-Con, when Carlton Cuse stated ‘NO. It is not a cloud of nanobots. Sorry.’”
At this point, I could ask, “How the hell am I supposed to know what Carlton Cuse said at the Comic-Con? Was I there?”
But that’s no good, because you know what he said. Probably most of the people here know it. This website is a place for you and those like you, not me or viewers like me. Given that, you should control it and maintain it to your liking.
And I mean that in a good way.
Man, kid bro, I know we get “geeky” and nit picky here from time to time, but by no means do I or anyone else here want to drive anyone off.
In fact, the first time I saw “smokey” I thought, “Dammit! I know what it is!” because I had read “Prey” by Chrichton. So I set out to look for a forum for LOST to tell them what my theory was. You can guess the rest :)
Disproved like many of my other “brainstorms”.
There are many brilliant people out there. They come up with some great theories and ideas on the story (and it is a story) that I could never conceive of.
So I am content to let it unfold, watch and observe, and occasionally spout off when I see people here being well, dumb. :)
But, you my friend are not that and I hope you didn’t take it that way.
BTW
sleepz posted this link in another thread http://www.tv-links.co.uk/show.do/1/53
You will need to download DivX but it is worth it. Great quality.
I am watching season one again to pick up on clues.
sleepz has a thing going on here every Monday and Thursday (check his link)
We watch and comment on the episode.
Cheers :)
To the author of “Man, kid bro” (there’s no names by the comments on my computer) -
No offense was taken. I certainly didn’t intend to stop reading this site or others, and I probably overreacted with the “you people” stuff. And I agree with the main point. Here’s why.
Lost is a tough show. Neither my friends nor my (ex-)girlfriend would watch this show with me, either because they think it’s too strange, or because it’s too hard to follow, or whatever. I know many people who’ve given up on it for those same reasons.
And what I’d always say to them was, “Hey, it’s a challenging show to watch. You’re allowed to not like it.” Many people still like it anyway. Many people think it offers more issues and concepts to think about than, say, Grey’s Anatomy (no knock on that at all, though). And many people, including me, love it for how it weaves concepts of religion, philosophy and science through its characters and stories, which are themselves deeply emotional and mysterious.
But the show requires a lot of commitment to the content. It really is tough to follow. Additionally, if you’re going to anticipate where the writers are going with it, it requires at least a little commitment to the creative process.
In that respect, I understand that people like me (who as yet know little about what the writers have said) should think twice and read up before “revealing” some incredible discovery we’ve made about the show. That’s generally how theorizing, as well as artistic comment, goes.
Personally, I’m going to read a little bit more about the show, and the producers/writers, and rewatch some key episodes before I try to guess where the show is going again (which I’m certain I’ll end up returning to at some point soon).
I agree that people shouldn’t be driven off, and anyone should feel free to participate who does so in good faith. And I don’t want to say that everyone here should be forced to do research.
But I think that LOST, as a show, gets more rewarding the more you invest in it (like most good works of art). Likewise for this website. I’m aware that message boards just in general can get pretty uncivil and “trollish”. But if enough people make the decision, individually and voluntarily, to participate in good faith, then it’ll probably be just fine.
DoubleD you are 100% accurate and correct….
so the island isnt purgatory? wow thanks for the info, i did not know that…
I understand the frustration….really, I do. At the same time though, showing a little courtesy and politeness goes a long way in keeping this site running as a place for Lost fans to post their ideas and theories. Or you crotchety veterans can continue to talk down to those people and make it look you believe you are part of an elitist think tank. I think someone hit the nail on the head when they said that one of the bad parts about the rehashed, trollish and nonsensical theories is that each one moves the good ones further down the list. However, there appear to be tools in place on here to move past this pesky little problem.
First, if it is a rehashed theory, trollish, nonsensical, etc. type of theory, simply refrain from commenting. Or if you do, let one person comment that it has already been theorized, providing a link to the original theory. This way, if you sort by ‘Most Comments’ those types of theories will sink to the bottom of the list. Can you dig it?
The whole reason that I searched this board out was due to the fact that I had a theory that I was desperate to bounce off of people who thought about this show as much as I did. Since I was in such a hurry to post the theory and see what everyone thought, I quickly perused several pages of theories to make sure that my direction was somewhat original. That being the case, I can see how people could post theories which may have already been posed a few months ago. I work 40 hours a week, attend grad school, am married, am a father to two young children and write weekly columns for a web site. So, as simple a task as it may seem to some of you, finding the time to rifle through every freakin’ theory that’s been posted on here simply isn’t possible for everyone.
I also have a little trouble understanding the rigid attitude towards original ideas. When you look back over the last three years of this show, can’t you think of at least one event which you would have deemed to be ridiculous or unfounded had it been postulated by someone on this board? Yes, the purgatory angle has been flatly denied by the writers and producers, but it’s difficult to poo-poo the other angles.
How’s ‘bout we show a little love on here and remember that (with a few exceptions) most of the people that post on here love the show as much as you and just want to be part of a community where they can talk about their favorite show without being looked at like they’re an idiot. Think about how bad it would suck to come here to avoid that, only to be treated like an idiot by the people on here as well. So, come on people now….smile on your brother (and sister). Everybody get together and try to love on another right now. M’kay?
I flagged this post as Trollish and gave you a -1 ; ) Guess you didn’t like my Locke is the Key post - just trying to infuse a little levity into the mix. Still, I was banished tothe Not Really a Theory bin…..
That was very good MP. What I hear you saying is that DoubleD’s comments and the actions of others on this site (including the banishment of your Locke theory to the “Not Really a Theory” page) are leaving you with feelings of exclusion and inadequacy. Is that correct? DoubleD, what is your response to this? And remember, try not to talk directly about the person(s), but rather how their actions make you feel. This is all very good. I feel a lot of healing going on here. We’re probably only a few posts away from MP being able to do a ‘trust fall’ into DoubleD’s arms.
Ahh, I feel the luv brutha’s :)
To Dharmacist: Excellent post. I only wish I could be so elloquent and diplomatic. As I said, my ire was up when I made the post. I have resisted the urge to edit it so we could get some reaction and therefore get action.
To MiltonsParadise (love the handle BTW): Thank you for voting this negative and trollish. This is exactly what I wanted. Some feed back and to make people here use the website effectively.
I may be “crotchety”, but I am not not a veteran by an means. :)
