Everything was going great in the early 80’s. The Dharma Initiative as moving ahead and the Hanso Foundation was helping freatly as far as funding.
On the Hanso Foundation board are Widmore Corporation and Paik Heavy Industries. Widmore is involved in construction and medicine and Paik is involved in trasportation to and from the island. Widmore and his people would have to know the whereabouts of the island or atleast that it is an island in the pacific because he is in chargeof construction and medicine. Paik just builds boats, submariens, cars, etc… So he doesn’t need to know where the island is, or even that it is an island.
Widmore understands that the island is special and is being for good and wants to help the Hanso Foundation and DI keep it that way. Paik, knows enough, from his builds that there is something weird or special or advanced going on. He wants to be more involved, possibly even take over.
Sometime after the purge, DI had to stop going to the island because of the ‘virus’ and therefore Widmore and Paik aren’t needed or as involved as they used to be.
Out of curiousity, Widmore would ‘race around the world’ on a search for the island. He just wanted toknow where it was. Maybe he was scared to go to the island because of the DI virus.
Paik never found the island, or even heard it was an island. Paik, power hungry and jealous, bugged Widmore and found out that he knows where it is and that he sent Desmond there to get rid of him via the boat that Widmores associate Libby gave him. He found about the islands general location and sent out an expedition to find the island. Naomi works for Paik. She has to know many languages to help in her business dealings with Paiks business associates.
Dharma is still dropping food on the island, they know the location. Paik doesn’t, his team is on the freighter.
Naomi has a picture of Desmond and Penny because Paik gave it to her. Paik knows that Widmore sent Desmond there. Naomi has it to identify the correct island.
Penny is searching for and electromagnetic anomalie because she knows that her fathers company helped build The Swan. Penny is doung this because the suspects that her father sent Desmond there to get rid of him. She put 2 and 2 together: daddys weird construction projects in the pacific and his sponsored boat race.
I know that there are probably many holes, but I just believe that the Hanso Foundation had to know about the Island. They contracted out Widmore and Paik’s companies to do business. Widmore knows of the island because he sent Desmond there, so to me, it has to be Paik.

Hope: read post from Happy Athiest created June 4 “My Attempt to Explain Dharma, Hanso, Quarantine, Desmond, Widmore, Mikhail, and Food Drops!” It does a great job of explaining the industrialists competing for control of the island.
I think its more logical the freighter is Widmore’s people and Paik is in cahoots with them. Old man Widmore used Penny’s relationship with Desmond (he never liked Des anyway) to find the island.
How could Paik get a photo of Des & Penny?
I read it and liked it. However this is my attempt. I have been thinking this way for a while, before 6-4. I meant to give credit to him or her, but don’t really know how. All I am saying is that is my theory. To me it is just too coincendtall that Desmond ended up on the island in a race that is sponsored by Widmore. And on an island full of coincedences, that, to me, just means something.
The picture, well, any rich, highly motivated man, can find means. In flashbacks, I have seen Paik use both means and other people to get a job done. If Naomi can convince people that she is a good guy, I know that other people can too.
totally agree - Paik is on the frieghter and he’s tracking a gps signal in the watch that he gave Jin to try and find the island but ben’s jamming signal has been blocking it +1
