I think that its not who is in the coffin but the funeral that we should really be paying attention to. Ben stated that if Jack radioed the freighter they would all die… so in the flash forward it does not matter who is in the coffin but what makes Jack so disfuctional is that the losties have slowly been dying and this is probably one of the last losties left alive except for Jack and Kate… Which would also explain why there is no one to go to the funeral. Just my take on it….
I still think it is Michael in the coffin. He was ‘survived by a teenage son’ so Walt is probably still around. Was Walt ever that close to Michael? He never knew him until his mother died and Michael came to collect him from his stepfather. Initially their relationship was not great. Micheal did not approve of Walts friendship with Locke. He had little experience of children and Walt was not chuffed with this man who was his father. Did Walt want to leave the Island? He burnt the raft!
Perhaps Walt found out about his father murdering Anna Lucia and LIbby. At the point of the flash forward Walt would be a teenager. Hormones and emotions running wild, adolescents do not need much reason to dislike their parents. Teenagers can be very unforgiving. If Walt really wanted to stay put on the Island then maybe he blames Micheal and thus a rift between them. Only a theory :)
yeah makes sense why he did not show up
Don’t know why Walt wasn’t there. Perhaps he too hated what Michael did. Perhaps he was involved in his death. Considering there was “alot of noise” coming from the apartment??? Doesn’t sound like a typical suicide to me.
Maybe Jacob was involved. If he did cure Juliets sister of cancer then he could be invovlred in other ‘activities’ off of the island?
THE FIRST comment MADE HERE, MAY BE ONTO something. IF THE losties ARE ALL DYING, AND ONLY JACK AND KATE ARE LEFT. MAYBE JACK WANTS TO GET BACK TO THE ISLAND TO STAY ALIVE. I KNOW HE WAS contemplating suicicide BUT THIS COULD HAVE JUST BEEN AS A LAST RESORT, thinking THAT HE COULDN’T TALK TO ANYONE. IE KATE NOT answering.
Yeah that is what I was thinking - Jack wants to get back to teh island not only to save himself but all the other losties as well and maybe if he thinks that if he is not back on the island before all teh losties die then he cannot do anythign about it… thus why he is so broken apart.

I also believe it is Michael in there. There could be any number of reasons why no one was at the funeral. His ex-wife is deceased. As someone else suggested, he could have been one of many other Losties to kick the can after the rescue, leaving virtually no one to show up. Also, if they are all from different places, it’s not likely they would even know about it. And even if Michael did have friends and family, he may not have been able to contact them anymore if he had been forced to change his identity in order to cover up his disappearance and return from the island. And there’s the fact that he plugged a couple of the Losties and betrayed some others.
Walt’s absence could be explained in a few ways as well. First, he may be back on the island in the actual, physical sense. We already know that he has some sort of supernatural gift, and possibly the ability to travel in a way that we can’t comprehend. I have a different scenario in mind though. In my theory about the rumble at the radio tower that we have not witnessed yet, I mentioned that Michael may have attempted (albeit against the instructions of Richard) to contact Jack and Kate, or maybe just Jack. Anyway, that would be one of the only ways to explain Michael being John Latham and Jack subsequently knowing that this is the case. Could be that they know that Michael contacted Jack, and Walt was taken away as punishment. Maybe they even helped Michael (John Latham) hang himself? This could also be another reason why Jack was so upset. He knows that these deaths are not accidents or of the victims’ own doing. Walt could have already returned to the island on his own, leaving Michael distraught enough to do what he did (or what we think he did).
Of course, if it turns out that it is not Michael is not the John Latham in the casket, then all my conjecture will have been for not.
So I guess everyone has come to the conclusion that the newspaper clipping has nothing to do with that funeral?
Maybe the noises that the security guard heard were a fight between Walt and Michael. Walt can definitely do some kind of mysterious travel. Bea Klugh asked Michael if he had ever seen Walt someplace he wasnt’ supposed to be. On Lostaway Island we have seen him three (4?) times in a place he wasn’t supposed to be. At least one of those times he was supposed to be off the island completely. It could have been Smokey, but I think it was Walt. So Walt can travel. I think he can travel to the Island. That’s where he is at the time Michael commits suicide.
To add to the “why Walt wasn’t there” theory - imagine you witnessed your dad sacrificing the lives of three/four other people to gain your own safety. Furthermore, it’s not just three/four random people, it’s three/four people you’ve lived with for the last few months, three/four people you actually liked and/or were friends with. For all Michael and Walt know, the four Losties he gave up to the Others were killed. So imagine you never liked your dad to begin with, that the only reason you’re even with him is because your mother just died and you have no one else, that because of your father showing up you were involved in the crash that left you stranded on an island, and to top that all off your father just let four people get killed in order to escape said island…. and you LEFT YOUR DOG BEHIND! I wouldn’t blame Walt at all for not waning to be at his father’s funeral.
The part of the news paper that is important to the funeral is the name of the dead man. J. antham. Look at it closely. Enlarge it. You’ll see it.
