Hi.Very nervous first timer here,so be kind.I have been thinking about the sickness and how it caused Rousseau to kill her team and was wondering if the timeline would fit in with the purge.Sixteen years ago the others Rousseau talks about may have been Dharma.If they released some airborne disease in to the air to kill of the hostiles,that would explain why her team got sick.Ben may have warned the natives/hostiles so that they could protect themselves and that would explain the need for the purge;Dharma would have been committing genecide after all.It would explain the quarantine sign inside the hatch door and would paint Ben in a different light.Maybe he took Alex because he thought Rousseau was infected too.
If the people on the freighter are connected to,or are Dharma this could be the beginning of the second sickness,which is why Ben told Jack every living person on the island would die.We might see Rousseaus first flash back as the losties start to develop symptoms.Just lots of speculation but i think it would be cool : ) Thanks for reading and hope this hasnt been covered too many times before……….But what else is there to do?

I have have been following the lost experience websites. I have no idea how they will actually equate or if they provide actual clues of what will happen on the actual show of lost. However, your mention of the freighter and the sickness was considered a huge discovery in the lost experience. Clues from the stories of Rachel Blake and other experiences from lost websites (Check Lostpedia for the official sites) lead to the freighter that is in route to the island being the “Helgus Antonius”. This is a medical freighter that has been upgraded with unknown technologies that will enable it to reach the island. The purpose or the reason for the upgrades was never mentioned. Even more importantly is the fact that this freighter has about fifty or sixty percent of its compartments marked quarantine.

I actually think the concept of an illness was created by Ben as a means of explaining the purge to the Dharma Initiative. He gassed them all in place, then tells the DI folks that they’ve encountered an “illness” and that he and everyone in the hatches will remain quarantined. This accomplishes several things for him; 1. It ensures that no one else from the Dharma Initiative will come to the island for fear of contracting the decease. It also provides an easy explanation as to how the DI members died without raising suspicion of a mass murder.
It keeps the door open for Dharma to continue to provide supplies to the Others.
It gives total control of the island and who is recruited to come to the island to Ben and the Others. As previously stated DI will NOT be sending anyone else there if they think most the only people still alive are in quarantine.
It sets up Ben as the face of the island for the DI members providing the supplies.
I really don’t think there was ever any real illness. I think Danielle is mentally ill and she may have killed her own people because she believed it was them who were ill - but it was in fact her own mental breakdown. The entire “quarentine” was just a control thing Ben created to keep Dharma from coming back and keep any remaining members of the DI who weren’t killed, in the hatches and out of the way.
Good points Jukin. I think I was having a day when I thought maybe this will really play out like ‘The Stand’.

WTF i agree. The “sickness” matter has always been on my head and wondered if we would ever see this sickness or if it may come again.. A flashback of Danielle would be nice in the next season. I would certaintly like to see that flashback and how her team got sick. I believe the way that Ben did the DI & his father in would be the same way Danielle’s crew died. +1 way cool.
