Apologies if this is painfully obvious - but it occurred to me that it’s been suggested the Island is a nexus of different times / places (a la Dark Tower) and that the choice of using Portland as a location for Mittelos Bioscience and where they are “not” might be significant - as in PORT Land. A LAND that literally has PORTs to different places and times. Can anyone think of other things significant to Portland? The initial impuse is of course, they picked it for its ultra normal sounding name in juxtaposition to how amazing the island is, but I think there is something more there. Thoughts?

    Hey WB,

i like the play on the name and I’m sure the writers probably meant that to be picked up on. The first thing that came to mind were two earlier theories, one by katrinicity on the island itself as a “port-land”— http://www.lost-theories.com/theories/2007/oct/25/fate-connections-ley-lines-cro/

and the other was a post by ProfOzone on Ben as a Ferryman figure—a “porter”: http://www.lost-theories.com/theories/2007/jun/29/ferryman-theory/

Then when I did a wiki search on Portland I found that the name originates with the Isle of Portland in England and interestingly a couple of things about that Portland connect up with the two theories. In kat’s theory, she mentions the association of rabbits/trickster figures with places that are in that kind of betwixt and between state, In the Isle of Portland, there is a strong superstitious association of rabbits with bad luck (to the extent that the word “rabbit” is not used by the general populace.) And then in one of Bernard Cornwall’s novels he associates “The Isle of Portland with The Isle of the Dead—one of the places the Ferryman would transport people too.

More interesting is Mittelos Bioscience, Mittelos being an anagram for TIME LOST. So Portland is a time portal.
