So, I’ve been trying to “think outside the box” on certain things about the island. One of my big questions is if The Others are not the Dharma Initiative, what are they doing? From what I’ve seen the DI were scientist performing research and experiments etc etc. And, we really haven’t been given too many clues about where the Hostiles came from, why they are there and what they do.
We know there were ppl still utilizing the Flame station and The Looking Glass. I can’t say whether or not the Hydro was something they used all the time or if it was mostly used when dealing with Jack. Oh, and of course lets not forget Desmond and Kelvins station, but was the on going button pushing campaign coming from The Others or was this a roll over from the DI and because they were isolated had no idea that the DI wasn’t around anymore?
Back to original question. If they aren’t continuing the work of the DI, what are they doing? I can’t imagine the pregnancy agenda is the only reason and from what Richard Alpert said doesn’t seem to be the original reason. So, what then?
Also, if The Hostiles had no interest in the experiements and research the DI were doing, why on such a large island would The Hostiles kill off everyone and basically take over their “turf”? (of course, from what we know the whole island seems to be the hostiles “turf”)
So, we know Juliets supposed role in coming to the island, the pregnancy. What about Ethan? If Ben is the only “mortal” so to speak left after the purge, why bring Ethan to the Island. I make the assumption he is not “hostile” unless there is a medical university on the island we arent aware of. I get the assumption Mikhail was also not “hostile” due to his expertise in mechanics. So, he was brought to the island by the Hostiles, but why? Yes, of course the obvious answer is for communication but why communicate?
Why the need to communicate? Why the need for a surgeon? Was Ethan only brought in after other “mortals” were brought in? Was Mikhail only brought in when communicating with “someone” on the outside was important? Who would they need to communicate with? Are they posing as the original DI and must keep up communications in order to not get caught?
Why all of this? What was the reason for the purge? If everyone on the island is original “hostile” except for Ben and Juliet of course, who taught them their skills? Certainly not Ben.
Jacob. I don’t know. You’re asking too many unanswerable questions. Too much speculation. I could theorize for hours on it all but it’s really be said before. Also most of this stuff probably won’t be answered. Later on it’ll be brought up to an extent and then they’ll just let the viewer assume as much as possible and everyone could come to their own unique terms with whats going on. Blah sorry, I’m of no help what-so-ever.

True, lots of questions. But, if anything a good subject to discuss and get the brain juices flowing…what could they be doing?
Good questions I wish I had the answers to, but all I have is more. I always had the impression that Goodwin and Ethan were Dharma who changed sides and were spared in the purge. Possibly Mikhail as well. If so, that would bring in the question of what was Dharma doing that was so bad that it’s own members would turn against them.
The pregnancy issue does seem to be Ben’s personal sidetrack, which suggests that the ideas on the board about his mother having become pregnant with him on the island and then leaving could be true.
As for the greater strength of at least some of the others, I’m curious about that too, but don’t think we have enough to go on for an answer. It could be something as simple as that they (scientists) created their own super-steroid-vitamins concoction, or something far more mysterious.
Looks like you’ve reminded us how much we don’t know!
lunaash, you’ve asked a lot of great questions and I agree with ozzig for the most part.
I’ve always thought it was Ben who recruited Ethan and Goodwin, but I have nothing to back that up.
Ben said ‘the island is under attack’, and personally I believe him. Ben is charged with the task of defending the Island against all comers, not all of the Others are necessarily informed of this, many of them are being used by Ben and only told information on a need-to-know basis. For the most part, people know the significance of defending the Island(which I believe is one of several places around the world they are defending)and follow Ben’s orders without questioning them, and most likely, they’re right to do so. Dharma just became a convenient cover story for the Others, not only for people like our Losties to believe in, but also some of the actual Others that were brought to the island.
it has to be for more than the pregnancy issue. If that were the only problem they could just leave and procreate then return.
