OK—here’s what I take to be a big clue—the fact that Fred “had” one of the great macaroni and cheese dinners while he was in the sleep study at school. Now in the first video he does mention having macaroni and cheese at college, but I think the “great” macaroni and cheese only started when he got to the island and started getting the Dharma Initiative drops. So here’s a theory—what if Fred is not on the island, but participating in some kind of experiment, an experiment conducted at the University of Michigan and involving either remote viewing, psychic teleportation, and/or invading other people’s dreams—all paranormal phenomenon which coincidently, the producer has theorized about. (See for example: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Remote_viewing.) And, as in the sleep study at school—he is able to experience things like the macaroni and cheese dinners on the island, or perhaps even teleport them back to where he is. I wonder if in fact he did “bring” the clown bank back from somewhere? He was friends with Kate as a child—could this be an object from their childhood? If he was a subject in a scientific experiment would that account for the way the room looks? It is rather sterile and clinical looking for a bedroom. Do we know for sure that this is Fred’s bedroom? I know he’s been talking to his F/other but do we know in fact that his M/ather is really there?

Ah, jaz… I like the way you think…

There’s something else you know that might help here… another piece of information Fred has revealed in the past… that might give insight.

Jaz, you could be on to something…. A couple of things to note

1)He said he did the sleep study during his sophmore year…..that would make him about 20….he said he was abducted by the aliens on his 20th birthday….One thing that bugs me is that he says he was abducted BEFORE the island experience…….COuld this all be just a virtual therapy that he’s been placed into…you know, for his “sorta” craziness?

2)He says he is waking up writing “annie died on mars”. HE is the one writing it!!!! Speaks of multiple personalities to me…..

3)He’s getting crazier which makes him more adorable!

  4. ProfOzone Aug 22, 2007 11:32 p.m. Comment: 4

Right, shell… Fred’s abduction occurred while the sleep study was going on. Good catch. :-)

  5. ProfOzone Aug 22, 2007 11:42 p.m. Comment: 5

    Well… that’s the question… isn’t it… :-)

  6. jazprof Aug 23, 2007 5:13 a.m. Comment: 6

ooo good catch shell. Maybe this is where Twilighteners is helpful. Maybe through the sleep study he was in contact with other beings (possibly not aliens, but to Fred much more powerful—”Superman” and therefore aliens). These beings can travel pyschically, they can enter dream worlds (like the world inhabited in those few seconds between the time someone knows they are dying and slips into the dream world and when that person dies. Perhaps that is where the “dying on Mars” might come in. And Fred is psychically visiting the island but is afraid the aliens are coming back to take him back to the lab.

Or—it could just be that he sees the doctors who are treating him as aliens (again just more powerful) and is afraid they will wake him up and bring him back to the hospital.

Another clue, the fact that implants don’t work on him?

  7. jazprof Aug 23, 2007 7:28 a.m. Comment: 7

kat, you think he is physically there, rather than psychically visiting?

Possibly Annie is in that state between life and death and Fred has named that state—that dream world—Mars? Which still makes me wonder if she is his Mom—’cause dying from a brain tumor—your mind leaves your body well before the body ceases to be.

  8. Occam Aug 23, 2007 8:52 a.m. Comment: 8

Mars… yummi… oops, ‘scuse me, guys, I thought this was Room 23… ;-)

  9. jazprof Aug 23, 2007 10:18 a.m. Comment: 9

Yeah, kat, agreed that his Mother couldn’t have died when he was born. She could still be Annie though.

I agree with the Twilighteners being the supermen/aliens in Fred’s view. I think that’s right.

Still not certain of the whole chronology. At this point, my inclination is—Fred was in the sleep study in school when he was 20, and this was his first experience with the “aliens.” He is now in an experiment at the University of Michigan which has allowed him to psychically travel to the island. I don’t think he’s physically there, which is why we don’t see him in any episodes of Lost, but he’s able to manifest such that he interacts with people there. He fears the rearrival of the aliens as they were able to reach him before when he was in a similar state during the sleep study.

Occam, could be the magic box…keep visualizing, man. You’re visualizing some yummiful stuff.

  10. ProfOzone Aug 23, 2007 11:24 a.m. Comment: 10

The producers say… Fred was actually on the island.

The producers also say that it may not be a coincidence that Fred’s experiences took place at the University of Michigan.

Yeah, wasn’t sure which “experiences” you meant there.

Did Fred go to University of Michigan?

Oh wait, maybe he’s in some kind of experiment now (not during college) which is allowing him to actually be on the island, BUT he wasn’t on the plane.

(Yes, PG, top and bottom left, …say no more)

kat, yeah sometimes I think I’m the one with the multiple personalities.

Ugh… Chris and his danged pictures.

…i was just surprised by the ‘84, that’s all

  20. ProfOzone Aug 23, 2007 2 p.m. Comment: 20

Fred hasn’t revealed yet where he went to school, but it’s been hinted that it was the University of Michigan, and the producers would like to confirm that.

    Peachy: Surprised in what sense?

lol! well…I thought “Fred” was younger than me!! ;)

  23. shell Aug 23, 2007 2:15 p.m. Comment: 23

Maybe the when the scientists were testing Fred at Uof M, they realized they had a good case study and actually arranged it so he was on the fateful flight. Maybe his father is involved in the set up since they didn’t get along too well.

  24. jazprof Aug 23, 2007 2:18 p.m. Comment: 24

kat, I rewatched #5 and I’m not sure if that helped or not. Fred’s story of how he got to the island is that after the complications with M/ather’s surgery he had to get back (reason unspecified) and took an earlier flight.

A couple of observations: so far Fred has mentioned 3 aliens: Vincent, Desmond, and Ethan. Vincent is the only one he has had direct contact with. Vincent first says (telepathically): “Join us, Help us, Obey us.” Interesting—the first two imply that Fred is being appealed to to be one of the aliens himself or at least to aid them. The last, a different kind of relationship.

University of Michigan—known as a Science and Technology center, associated with 60’s idealism, but also with corporate sponsoring of the research. Do you think the surgery performed on Fred’s Dad was a more unusual or complicated procedure (well than such procedures usually are)? Could there be a U of Michigan/Dharma connection there?

  25. jazprof Aug 23, 2007 2:19 p.m. Comment: 25

    aahhhh shell, interesting…

  26. dabiatchishere Aug 23, 2007 2:19 p.m. Comment: 26

    Good One, Prof!

Kat: I think Jazzie may just being trying to tell you something about him! Hm, I ditto, that! Whoa, incoming arrows!

  27. jazprof Aug 23, 2007 2:25 p.m. Comment: 27

dabi…hate to say it but ya lost me…but whatever it is it sounds intriguing.

I was just trying to get at the question of were these “experiences” the sleep study while he was in school, or does he have current experiences at the University of Michigan—could he be in an experiment now, not just 18 years ago.

  28. ProfOzone Aug 23, 2007 2:50 p.m. Comment: 28

Peachy: Hm… I guess a crappy webcam, bad lighting, and little sleep make me look ten years younger.

I wonder if I could bottle and market that…

The connection between the University of Michigan and the DI is important.

The question is… what REALLY happened to Fred during that sleep study? He had strange dreams and he was abducted. Or was he? And, as jaz points out, when Vincent first “met” Fred (was Fred lured into “meeting” Vincent?) Vincent made some pretty interesting requests. Did Vincent… expect Fred?

    Hmmmm…. hmmmmm, I say…

  29. jazprof Aug 23, 2007 4:31 p.m. Comment: 29

Gotta love it when you get the producer humming…

Kat—chronology of meeting in the woods: Fred sees his mother and follows her into the woods. He meets John. (Who is surprised to see him—wonder if this just means that Fred burst out of a clearing, or was he in fact appearing from somewhere off the island.) John puts antiseptic on his arm and tells him the frog story. Fred sees his mother again. Then he sees Vincent.

And here’s an interesting new clue I picked up this time: Fred’s M/ather refers to Christian as an old medical school friend of his—So Fred’s M/ather is her/mself a doctor.

I love Fred #5—when he says “Whoa…wait…what’s going on there, Fred….Some kind of weird Schrodinger’s Cat Thing.” ROFL :-D

Jazzie: Sorry for the confusion, I was referring to Kat asking you if you had reincarnated into lockeko. Trying to get her to see something. “Cupids arrows”!!

dab, thanks I think. Freckles you’ll need a bandaid for that, and Jaz nice work. As for Fred, I bet we find out Freddie spent some time in Room 23 before its over. He’s got that serial killer look to him
