Here I go assuming again. BUT, assuming Rachel actually did have cancer and wasn’t made to appear sick (as some have suggested) and Jacob did cure Rachel’s cancer…Why didn’t Jacob cure Ben’s tumor?
Thoeries are running rampant about Ben “wishing” for a tumor simply so Jack would have to fix him,,,but that doesn’t ring true to me. Of course I could be and probably am completely wrong. I’ve also heard that Rachel may be an Other and her appearing sick was essential to Juliet trying so hard to find a solution to make her pregnant. For a moment lets speculate that all of the above is untrue…why couldn’t Jacob cure Ben if he can cure cancer? Has Ben upset Jacob in a way that would make HIM not want to help Ben? IMO, Ben looked completely shocked when Juliet told him he had a tumor…Ben knowing it was cancer, to me, was another sign that he can tell the future. Ben must be running scared that the all powerful Jacob isn’t helping him out, could be another reason he wants John Locke on his side so bad…because of John’s connection to the island.
I don’t think Ben wanted Jacob to heal him. I think Ben took the tumor (which we still don’t know if it was cancer or not) as a sign of something else, and he let things play out so that he could find out what the sign was telling him. When he found out a spinal surgeon was on the island, he knew what the sign meant. If he was given a tumor as a sign that Jack was coming, then it follows that he should have Jack work on it. Ben doesn’t even have to know why this is necessary (although he may know); all he has to know is that it is.
It may be that Ben is having power struggles with Jacob, but I rather doubt it. I think Ben believes very strongly in his cause and in his mission and I get the sense that faithfully serving Jacob is part of that for him. If any new enemies are revealed for Ben, I suspect they will come from outside his organization.
It appears that Jacob can’t cure cancer. Ben made that promise either on faith or because he had an ace up his sleeve. The charts could have been old and the doctors could have cured her before they had that conversation or they could have been fake.
Rachel had cancer. She was on chemotherapy and therefore could not have children. Juliet developed some method to allow a chemotherapy patient to conceive. She was approached by the Others shortly thereafter. She signed on with them, intending to leave after 6 months. When that time elapsed, she asked Ben if she could leave to be with her sister. Ben showed Juliet some charts (which may or may not have been real) at a very convenient time to convince her that Rachel would die and that Jacob would help on the condition that she stayed with them until her work was finished. The chemotherapy put the cancer into remission and the rest, as they say, is history.
I think Ben was genuinely surprised that he had a tumor when Juliet told him. I think if he “wished” for anything, it was someone to come and save him, and, like everything else ben seems to wish for, it came true. It seems that not just animals, people and objects come out of this so called “magic box” but events as well. Ben told Jack that he needed a surgeon and a plane fell out of the sky with one aboard. He told Locke he needed a way to keep Juliet and Jack on the island, and Locke came running out of the woods to blow up the submarine. Clearly Ben has some association with fate. Maybe a power he has received from being born on the island? And I am thinking he might not be the only one. Some of them can leave the island (Ethan and Richard) and effect fate in the outside world (ie Juliet’s ex getting run over by the bus). I also think that John Locke has this power, although he doesn’t know why or how to control it, but we got a sample of this when his dad appeared… although, Ben might have been the one to make that happen as a means of manipulating Locke). Clearly Locke has a connection to the island.
Jacob isn’t on the Island? Rachael’s cancer didn’t reappear and the charts were simply faked?
