Locke is alive. People seem to forget that the flashforwards are exactly that - flashes forward, to the future. Therefore, in the “present” of the show, Locke is alive. We just happen to know that he's going to die.

Haven't seen whether it's Jin or Miles yet, but I'd put money on Jin being dead. Him turning up alive would remove so much of the emotional impact from the finale of season four, since no-one gave a damn about Michael.

on Matthew Abbaddon from Black Rock?

Couple of points:

Firstly, the “not aging” part. Are you having a laugh? We haven't seen him more than ten years apart. My dad looks the same as he did ten years ago, and yet I'm reasonably sure that he's still getting older.

Secondly, didn't the “miracle” happen while he was on a walkabout? It would be a particularly flippant slave who would describe the slaving process that way.

I'm not convinced by it. I think the Black Rock is simply a plot device designed for three things:

The way the Hanso found the island;

An indication that the island could move, and has done before;

A way to get the Losties access to dynamite.

Of course locke is on the wall of the living people, because he is alive. Don't forget that Jack with the beard is 3 years in the future from the point that the island disappeared…so Locke will be alive on the island….

*AC has got a whiff of this…*

The precise dialogue is as follows:

Desmond: I know this doesn't make any sense, because it doesn't make any sense to me. But…eight years from now…I need to call you, and I can't call you if I don't have your number.

Penny: What?

Desmond: Look, Penny, just give me your number, and, and I know I've ruined things, and I know you think things are over between us, but they're not. If there's any part of you that still believes in us, just give me your number.

Penny: And what's to say you won't call me tonight, or tomorrow.

Desmond: I won't call for eight years. December 24, 2004. Christmas eve. I promise. Please, Pen.

It's clear enough for me. Desmond remarks that he won't call Penny again for eight years. This is true. Penny questions if he won't call sooner. Desmond assures her that he won't. This is also true. That he and Penny meet again was not the point of conversation, nor was it ever claimed to be so. The next time Desmond calls her, it's eight years later. Just as he said. Unless that changes, there's no problem here.

on Matthew Abbaddon from Black Rock?

Original idea, for sure.

Does Abaddon have an African accent? Not really. That jars with me, but it's not the be all and end all. Yet there is the sensibility of having a black man, one of the few left in the show, play a slave. Especially given the stinging claims of Harold Perrineau (Michael) at ludicrous claims of racism over the handling of his character when he was killed off.

That part jars with me more.

Still, good pick up on the miracle idea. And I believe you've tied it in with good intentions and some theoretical stretching, which is precisely what this site is about. +1

 on Calling Freighter A Mistake?

Thanks for the welcome, Coolbeans (plsss don't send the lynch mob ever);) Thanks for the insight lockeslover ;) I'm looking back at the final episode of season 4, just have 2 thoughts— does Sun really blame Jack for Jin's death on the freighter, hence her approaching Whitmore regarding the island? I also recall Sun yelling at her father that she blames 2 men for the death of her husband, one of which is her father , the other (whom she didn't name) is ..Jack?? If so, is it safe to say that in the future Sun will be another “Whitmore” who just cares about herself and nothing of others (people on the Island)? Another thing: they call Locke by the name “Jeremy Bentham”. I understand why they can't say his name considering the O6 “lied” about their survival and the events on the island and that they're being watched (like Sayid and Hurley), but why call him that of all names? I recall this name from 2 books i recently read , where this name plays a central role: “The Traveller” and “The Dark River” by John Twelve Hawks - those books have some parallels to LOST's storyline but instead of time travel, they travel thru different planes of consciousness (with a dash of Terminator/The Matrix parallels as well). Jeremy Bentham was this English philisopher who was founding father of the utilitarianism movement and supposedly asserted that society should be watched without the society knowing it was being watched — hence his invention of the “panopticon”, a structure that acts as a “borderless prison” where each prisoner knows he/she is being watched without him/her ever seeing the watchers — thus the prisoners are sure to do what they are told lest they be found out, by the panopticon giving a sense of an “invisble omniscience”. Check it out : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Panopticon…..if Locke is Jeremy Bentham could the Island be the..panopticon??? (had to throw that in :))…Your insights are much welcome :)).

Any timeslip-centric story is akin to Slaughterhouse-Five by definition.

I was thrilled by the title of your post. Taking time to stop and consider how people might change is well worth considering. Who hasn't wanted to change on a basic level or need to change on a much deeper level. Often change is incredibly difficult to say the least.

If LOST was about the fundamental barriers between you and the change you desire, it would be a great show.
If LOST was about what it takes to change who you are, it would be a great show.
If LOST was about the way and the means of change, it would be a great show.

Science fiction is a chance for writers to pursue thoughts and ideas beyond Newton's laws. If the writers fritter away their time answering silly questions every smart person watching will get bored and look for something else.

Smart people already understand time paradox; stupid people don't care.

I have been a creeper on this site for quite some time now, soaking in all the knowledge this forum offers. It's about time I spoke up and this is something worth talking about.

I read this book in high school and thought, ehh. It was a cool book that my dad had, it had a cool name, so I read it. Once I saw the hatch implode I picked up the book and read it cover to cover in one night. Then read it again, I think since that faithful night I have read it at least 7 or 8 times. Which brings me to my point. All the thoughts in this thread are great but I think that we are also missing a big clue. What happened when the hatch imploded and the island moved? Massive hum and the sky turned purple. In the book Billy talks about death and when someone dies their, I guess you would call it Soul, is a bright purple beam of light. I wonder if this has something to do with the Island being a living thing, with a soul or with Jacob and his “being” somehow. Just something that has been eating at me for a while and thought this was a good time to get it off my chest and hear what you folks thought.

BTW, I caught the reference in the show first time around and am glad someone else posted on it so I could crack out of my creeper shell. Also, movies always ruin what the books good name. Don't be lazy and read it, it is pretty easy and won't kill you. So it goes.

In Alias, they used a serum to make a person seem dead until they could have a burial. Locke may just be asleep. One of the islands mystical properties is long life and healing beyond our comprehention. We may see Locke again in real time after all.

on (Question) About the writers of this show?

On another site run with admin working with a writer/producer there is a vote as to what will be the end of Lost. All the endings are relatively the same and they are all pretty lame. It is an obvious joke. The producers have promised a very surprise ending to Lost and I guarantee no one will want to miss it. If you hated all the other BS in this show, you would still want to see the end! I didn't watch the show live the first two seasons and watched them on DVD. When the first season ended, I was hooked but I waited a few weeks before buying season 2. When season 2 ended, I jumped in the car and drove to the nearest Best Buy in 30 degree weather (with rain) to buy the newely released season 3 (missed the first 6 episodes).

Locke was given a dream/vision. He was injured by his tribochet and felt helpless again since he couldn't walk. He had a vision and suddenly he was motivated by learning what to do next; send Boone up to the plane. Several people on the island are having visions of their own in dreams. I'm sure the producers would have embellished on this concept but probably felt it would contribute to the whole 'they're in a room or machine just dreaming away' theory, which they have disproved. Maybe someone is planting the visions???

P.S. CB07…I'm fairly sure you meant to say that this was totally SUBjective and silly. Not objective and silly. I think it would be impossible to talk about all the different aspects of this show without being subjective at times. There are leaps of faith that have to be made. grin

ya I remember that too.. kind of weird, but Penny did contact Desmond like cb11 said, not other way around..

another weird detail in that scene; Desmond told Jack that he was going to be a doctor, and dropped out of med school.. Now was that way before he met Penny?

is risebysin zorro's twin? I just checked and he's been here quite awhile but the same abrasive and dismissive approach. I didn't see ANYWHERE in the theory where abaddon was considered to be a slave simply because of his skin color. What I did see was a thoughful analysis including the qualities this character is imbued with. I agree that there is a quality, an aura around him that is different. Perhaps, as CB07 said, it was how the actor was portraying the part. But, the director has a way he wants the part to be played to put across the essence of the character and he/she will not allow the actor to stray to far from that essence. Also, actor are chosen in audition by how the directors/producers feel about them, how they will fit the character. So, it's obvious to me that this actor truly fit the part.

I think it is a fresh angle. I was confused for a bit, about the discussion of the various ships—it seemed you were discussing TYPES of ships, not what their function was. Any ship can be a slaver. They didn't build slave ships to be slave ships initially, they modified what they had. They may have built some to be just that, but not very many. Ships were sunk to easily and replacements had to be found to carry many different cargos. What I realized what you were pointing out was why slaves????
Why a slave ship? I hope I understood what you meant.

Thanks for taking the time to write and post it. It was fun to read and think about. +1

I can think of 4 other definite changes:

Ben grew up on the island

Alex grew up on the island

I think Aaron definitely aged as a baby on the island.
 .

what about women getting pregnant? Even though the women die, the fetuses definitely grow..

what about Walt looking like he's 18? Oh ya, he's off the island now :)

Problem is, I brought up Charlie shaving in the morning and then his beard being back that afternoon. No way enough time elapsed to have growth like that. But, AC assured me it was just a continuity problem, though I still have questions about it. So, hair does grow— remember that Sawyer gets a haircut from Kate.

So, bodies are changing. Hurley weighed ALOT and it's difficult to see a big difference w/out a substantial weight loss. Yes, Rose is convinved she is cancer free. Not sure how unless she had a lump of some type. Or a visible melanoma on her skin. Obviously John has regained the use of his legs. But, that has changed as well, remember? He couldn't move them again for awhile.

I hope I understood what you meant.
